Chapter 9 - The Documents, Not Excuses

“Then I’m not family,” Eleanor said.

Her voice was quiet, but the words changed the room.

When Rebecca entered the kitchen, Marissa immediately accused her of manipulating an elderly widow.

Rebecca placed her leather case on the island.

“Mrs. Hayes has been medically confirmed as fully competent. She also understands her finances better than either of you appears to.”

The forensic accountant arranged copies of the forged guarantee, computer records, loan applications, and the false power-of-attorney draft.

Daniel sank into a chair.

Marissa remained standing.

“This proves nothing.”

“The document metadata shows it was created on your laptop,” the accountant said. “It was edited through Daniel’s account and submitted from your home network.”

Eleanor turned to her son.

“Did you know?”

Daniel covered his face.

Marissa answered for him.

“He knew we needed options.”

“That was not my question.”

Daniel lowered his hands.

“I knew about the guarantee.”

Eleanor’s chest tightened, but she remained calm.

“Did you know my signature was copied?”

He began to cry.

“Yes.”

Marissa stared at him in disbelief.

“You idiot.”

Daniel looked at his wife.

“You said she would never find out.”

That sentence ended their alliance.

Marissa began blaming Daniel. Daniel accused Marissa of creating the documents. Both insisted they had never intended to take Eleanor’s house.

Rebecca waited until they stopped shouting.

“The bank has referred the forgery for criminal investigation,” she said. “Mrs. Hayes will not be responsible for the debt. Your company accounts are likely to be frozen.”

Daniel turned to Eleanor.

“Mom, please. Tell them you don’t want charges.”

Eleanor unfolded Thomas’s letter and placed it before him.

“Your father told me to help you face the truth.”

She took a breath.

“I will not lie to protect you from what you chose.”
