Chapter 4 - Thomas’s Locked Drawer

Thomas had kept important records in a locked drawer inside his study.

Eleanor had avoided opening it after his death. The study still smelled faintly of his cedarwood soap and old books. Entering the room made grief feel fresh again.

But Rebecca needed samples of Eleanor’s signature and copies of the original estate documents.

Eleanor unlocked the drawer.

Inside were tax records, property documents, insurance policies, and a sealed envelope with her name written in Thomas’s handwriting.

She stared at it for several minutes before opening it.

My dearest Eleanor,

If you are reading this, you may be facing a decision we once expected to make together.

Love Daniel, but do not finance his refusal to face consequences. Our son has a generous heart, yet he often mistakes rescue for support. Help him tell the truth. Do not help him escape it.

The house and savings are yours. They are not an advance inheritance. They represent your security, your choices, and the years of work we shared.

Protect them without guilt.

Always yours,

Thomas

Eleanor pressed the letter to her chest.

Thomas had known.

Perhaps not about the forged documents, but about Daniel’s habit of hiding problems until someone else was forced to solve them.

Behind the letter, Eleanor found another file. It contained notes from a conversation Thomas had held with Daniel two years earlier. Daniel had requested eighty thousand dollars after a failed property deal.

Thomas had refused.

He had written one final sentence beneath the notes.

Daniel blamed Marissa, but the bank records showed he approved every transfer.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

She had spent weeks imagining her son as a helpless man controlled by a demanding wife. Thomas’s records suggested something more painful.

Daniel might not be the loudest person in the room.

But silence could also be a choice.

Eleanor copied the documents for Rebecca.

Then she placed Thomas’s letter inside her handbag, where she could reach it whenever guilt threatened to weaken her.
