Then I’m Not Family / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum

Three days later, Marissa called.

Her voice was unusually calm.

“We should settle this as a family.”

Eleanor knew the phrase was a trap, but she agreed to one final meeting in her kitchen. Rebecca arranged for the conversation to be recorded and remained nearby with the investigators.

Daniel and Marissa arrived carrying two bags of documents.

They spread overdue notices across Eleanor’s table as though the amount itself would force her surrender.

Marissa explained that the company would collapse within days. Their home would be seized. Employees would lose their jobs. Lawsuits would follow.

“All of this can be prevented,” she said, “if you transfer five hundred thousand dollars.”

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

“Do you believe I should pay?”

He stared at the window.

“It would fix everything.”

“No,” Eleanor said. “It would move everything onto me.”

Marissa slammed her hand against the table.

“You have the money.”

“That does not make the debt mine.”

“It belongs to the family.”

“It belongs to me.”

Daniel finally spoke.

“You’ll leave it to us eventually.”

Eleanor felt something inside her become still.

There it was.

Not desperation. Not love. Entitlement.

Marissa pointed toward the papers.

“Your son is about to lose everything, and you’re protecting numbers in an account.”

“I am protecting myself from people who lied to me.”

Marissa’s eyes narrowed.

“Then choose. Pay the debt, or stop calling us family.”

Daniel whispered her name in warning, but he did not correct her.

Eleanor waited.

She gave him time to defend her.

He lowered his head.

The final piece of hope disappeared.
