Chapter 7 - The Family Campaign
After the birthday dinner, the pressure became organized.
Marissa called relatives and claimed Eleanor had become confused, paranoid, and selfish. She said Daniel was trying to protect his mother from making irresponsible decisions.
Two cousins called Eleanor to advise cooperation.
Daniel’s aunt suggested that refusing financial help might destroy the family.
A neighbor mentioned that Marissa had asked whether Eleanor ever left the stove on.
The lies spread quietly.
Eleanor documented every call.
Rebecca warned her that Daniel and Marissa might be preparing to challenge her financial independence. If they created enough doubt about her judgment, they could attempt to gain control of her accounts.
Eleanor responded methodically.
She completed a medical evaluation confirming that she had no cognitive impairment. She updated her legal documents. She removed Daniel as emergency financial representative and named Rebecca instead.
She also changed the locks.
Daniel discovered this when his key failed one Sunday morning.
He rang the bell repeatedly.
Eleanor opened the door but did not invite him inside.
“You changed the lock?”
“Yes.”
“I’m your son.”
“You entered last month without calling and photographed papers in my study.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“How do you know that?”
“The security camera.”
He stepped back.
“I was looking for Dad’s business records.”
“Your father never owned your company.”
“Marissa thinks you’re being manipulated by Rebecca.”
“Rebecca has shown me evidence. You have shown me excuses.”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I’m going to lose my home.”
“You could have told me before the debt reached half a million dollars.”
“I was ashamed.”
“You were ashamed, so you forged my signature?”
“I didn’t forge it.”
“Did you know about it?”
Daniel did not answer.
Eleanor closed the door.

Behind it, she heard him say, “I never wanted this.”
For the first time, Eleanor did not rush to comfort him.
