Then I’m Not Family / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Papers on the Island

The folder Marissa brought contained a proposed family loan agreement.

Eleanor read the first page while Daniel paced beside the island.

The agreement requested two hundred thousand dollars, secured against Eleanor’s house. The money would supposedly protect Daniel’s company from temporary cash-flow problems.

“This says I would be responsible if the company cannot repay,” Eleanor said.

Daniel stopped pacing.

“It won’t come to that.”

“Then why is my house necessary?”

“The bank needs security.”

Marissa leaned against the counter.

“It’s only paperwork.”

Eleanor turned another page.

The interest rate was high. The repayment schedule was vague. A signature line had already been marked with a yellow tab.

“I’m not signing this.”

Daniel’s shoulders dropped.

“Mom, please.”

“No.”

“You haven’t even let us explain everything.”

“I understand enough. Your company borrowed more than it can repay, and now you want to risk my home.”

Marissa’s voice sharpened.

“We’re not strangers asking for charity.”

“That doesn’t make this safe.”

Daniel moved closer.

“We could lose everything.”

Eleanor looked at her son’s tired face. She wanted to comfort him, but Thomas’s voice echoed in her memory.

Never solve a problem you are not allowed to examine.

“Bring me the complete business accounts,” Eleanor said. “Every loan, every contract, every expense. I’ll have an independent accountant review them.”

Marissa immediately closed the folder.

“That would take too long.”

“Then my answer is no.”

They left twenty minutes later.

That evening, Rebecca called again.

She asked Eleanor to photograph the agreement. After examining the images, Rebecca phoned back with alarming news.

The document referenced a previous guarantee supposedly signed by Eleanor eight months earlier.

Eleanor had never seen that guarantee.

Rebecca’s voice became careful and controlled.

“We may be dealing with a forged signature.”

Eleanor sat alone at the kitchen table long after the call ended.

For the first time, she wondered whether Daniel’s silence concealed more than embarrassment.
