The case became national news.
Reporters gathered outside Harcourt Maritime headquarters. Photographs of the red-lit yacht appeared across television screens and newspaper covers.
Some headlines called Olivia courageous.
Others called the operation dangerous.
Ryan’s attorneys tried to portray her as a vindictive heiress who had manufactured a crime to win sympathy during a divorce.
The evidence destroyed that argument.
Prosecutors presented financial records documenting forty-eight million dollars in fraudulent transfers.
Security footage showed Ryan stealing Olivia’s credentials.
His emails revealed plans to blame accountants and junior employees.
The hidden office recordings proved that he had discussed Olivia’s disappearance with Vanessa.
The yacht livestream captured his refusal to call for help after believing she had fallen into the ocean.
Vanessa testified against him.
She entered the courtroom wearing a plain navy suit, without the diamonds and designer clothing Ryan had purchased for her.
“I wanted Olivia’s life,” Vanessa admitted. “I wanted her house, her money, and her husband. I told myself that because Ryan loved me, I deserved what she had.”
The prosecutor asked, “Did he love you?”
Vanessa looked toward Ryan.
“No. He used my greed because it made me easy to control.”
Ryan showed no emotion.
During cross-examination, his attorney asked whether Vanessa was blaming Ryan to avoid punishment.
“Yes,” Vanessa replied. “I want a reduced sentence. But that doesn’t make the evidence false.”
Her honesty strengthened the case.
Margaret testified about the forged authorizations.
Nathan explained the security operation.
Captain Reed described the emergency lockdown.
Finally, Olivia took the stand.
She was eight months pregnant by then.
Ryan stared at her from the defense table.
His attorney approached.
“Mrs. Mercer, you arranged the circumstances on the yacht, correct?”
“I arranged cameras and rescue protection.”
“You invited Miss Cole aboard.”
“Yes.”
“You provoked my client by confronting him.”
“I asked him about crimes he committed.”
“Did Ryan physically push you?”
“No.”
The courtroom became quiet.
The attorney smiled as though he had found the weakness in her case.
“So there was no attempt to throw you overboard.”
Olivia looked at the jury.
“He moved toward me after admitting what he intended. I activated the planned escape before he could touch me.”
“But he did not push you.”
“No.”
The attorney turned toward the jury.
“Then what happened on that yacht was theater.”
Olivia’s answer came calmly.
“The fall was staged. His confession was not.”
The jury returned its verdict after two days of deliberation.
Guilty on every major financial charge.
Guilty of conspiracy.
Guilty of attempting to arrange Olivia’s death for financial benefit.
Ryan was sentenced to decades in federal prison.
When the judge asked whether he wished to speak, Ryan stood.
He turned toward Olivia.
“You took everything from me.”
