Chapter 2 - The First Lie

Olivia did not confront Ryan.
Every instinct urged her to demand answers, but Margaret stopped her.
“If he knows we are investigating, he will destroy the evidence,” she warned.
That evening, Olivia returned home as though nothing had happened.
Ryan was waiting in the dining room with candles lit and dinner arranged beneath silver covers.
He rose and kissed her cheek.
“How are my two favorite people?”
Olivia managed a smile.
“Tired.”
“You work too hard.”
He guided her to her chair and poured sparkling water into her glass.
“I’ve been thinking,” he said. “You should take maternity leave early.”
“I’m only five months pregnant.”
“That’s exactly why you need to slow down.”
“The doctors say everything is normal.”
Ryan smiled, but his eyes hardened for a fraction of a second.
“Doctors don’t understand the pressure you’re under.”
Olivia studied his face.
For years, she had interpreted his certainty as strength. Now she saw something different.
He was not protecting her.
He was isolating her.
“Maybe you’re right,” she said.
His expression relaxed.
“I usually am.”
Later that night, Olivia pretended to sleep while Ryan stood on the balcony speaking quietly into his phone.
She could not hear every word, but she heard a woman laugh.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Soon.”
A pause followed.
“No, she doesn’t suspect anything.”
Olivia closed her eyes before he returned to bed.
The next morning, she contacted Nathan Briggs, a private security specialist who had worked for her father.
Nathan installed encrypted monitoring software on Olivia’s business accounts. He also placed hidden cameras in her private office and reviewed the security system at her Manhattan residence.
Within forty-eight hours, they found the first undeniable evidence.
Ryan had entered Olivia’s study at 2:13 a.m. while she was sleeping.
He had opened her safe using a code she had never shared with him.
Inside, he photographed trust documents, insurance records, and copies of her father’s will.
He also connected a device to her laptop.
Nathan paused the footage.
“He’s been cloning your credentials,” he said.
Olivia felt sick.
“Can we prove what he used them for?”
“Not yet.”
Margaret leaned forward.
“Then we let him keep believing they work.”
They created a silent trap.
Olivia’s real financial authorizations were moved to a secure system controlled by Margaret and two independent trustees.
The credentials Ryan had stolen remained active, but every action was copied, recorded, and redirected.
For the next three weeks, Ryan continued transferring money.
He believed he was stealing millions.
In reality, the funds moved into controlled accounts where investigators could trace every participant.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Vanessa Cole.
Olivia recognized her immediately.
Vanessa had been Ryan’s executive assistant before their marriage.
Ryan claimed she had moved to California two years earlier.
She had not.
