Chapter 8 - The Document Vanessa Never Read
After Olivia returned safely to the yacht and Margaret revealed the VCL documents, Vanessa’s loyalty to Ryan collapsed.
She stared at the pages as though they were written in another language.
“You told me the company would hold investments,” she said.
“It does,” Ryan replied.
Margaret shook her head.
“It holds debt.”
Ryan pointed at Olivia.
“This is her trick. She changed the documents.”
Olivia did not deny it.
“You signed without reading them because you believed the papers would help you profit from my disappearance.”
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
“You said there’s a cooperation clause.”
“There is.”
“What does it mean?”
“It means you can provide complete evidence of Ryan’s financial crimes and acknowledge your own role. In exchange, prosecutors may consider your cooperation.”
Ryan moved toward her.
“Don’t say another word.”
Vanessa stepped away.
“You put forty-eight million dollars of debt in my name.”
“I was going to fix it.”
“When?”
“After we took control.”
“We?”
Ryan hesitated.
That hesitation gave Vanessa her answer.
There had never been a we.
She had been another shield between Ryan and the consequences of his choices.
An officer removed a phone from Ryan’s jacket. Another secured his laptop from the cabin.
Ryan continued protesting.
He claimed Olivia had manipulated him.
He claimed the recordings were incomplete.
He claimed the yacht emergency had frightened him.
Then Captain Reed played the full audio from the upper deck.
Ryan’s voice was clear.
She has dizzy spells. She stands near railings. Accidents happen.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“You recorded that too?”
Olivia looked at her.
“I recorded everything.”
Vanessa sank into a chair.
For several minutes, she said nothing.
Then she asked for an attorney.
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You think cooperating will save you?”
Vanessa lifted her head.
“No. But telling the truth might.”
She told investigators about the apartment, the secret accounts, and Ryan’s plan to gain control of the company.
She gave them passwords to encrypted files he had stored on her computer.
Most importantly, she revealed that Ryan had kept a handwritten ledger inside a safe at his private office.
The ledger listed every payment, every forged document, and every person he intended to blame if the scheme failed.
By morning, investigators had recovered it.
Ryan was charged with financial fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and attempted harm.
Vanessa faced charges for her participation in the fraud and conspiracy, though her cooperation later reduced the penalty.
As officers led Ryan toward the police boat, he looked back at Olivia.
“You’ll regret humiliating me.”
Olivia stood beneath the red lights, wrapped in a blanket.
“No,” she said. “I regret trusting you.”
