Chapter 3 - The Woman in Silver

Vanessa was twenty-nine, elegant, and impatient.
She had grown tired of waiting for Ryan to fulfill his promises.
Olivia learned this through recordings collected from Ryan’s office.
“You said she would give you control after the baby was born,” Vanessa complained.
“She will,” Ryan replied.
“And if she doesn’t?”
“She trusts me.”
“She barely lets you into board meetings anymore.”
Ryan was silent for several seconds.
Then he said, “There are other ways.”
That sentence changed the investigation.
Until then, Margaret believed Ryan’s scheme was primarily financial. He intended to drain Olivia’s accounts, weaken the company, and leave her after securing enough money.
Nathan was no longer convinced.
They increased security around Olivia without allowing Ryan to notice.
Drivers were replaced.
Meals were monitored.
Her medical appointments were protected.
Every private room she entered was checked in advance.
Olivia hated living as though danger followed her through every doorway, but fear gradually transformed into determination.
She had spent months doubting herself because Ryan constantly described her as emotional, exhausted, and confused.
Now the evidence proved that her instincts had been correct.
One Friday evening, Ryan invited her to dinner at an exclusive rooftop restaurant.
Vanessa was there.
She sat alone at the bar in a silver dress, pretending not to recognize them.
Ryan chose a table positioned where he could watch her.
Throughout dinner, his attention drifted toward the bar.
Olivia spoke about ordinary things while secretly studying their silent communication.
A glance.
A smile.
Vanessa touching the stem of her glass.
Ryan checking his watch.
When Vanessa walked past their table, she allowed her hand to brush against Ryan’s shoulder.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” she said.
Ryan looked up with rehearsed surprise.
“Vanessa?”
She smiled at Olivia.
“We used to work together.”
“So Ryan told me,” Olivia replied.
Vanessa placed a hand over her heart.
“Congratulations on the baby. You must be so excited.”
“We are.”
Ryan’s smile was convincing.
Vanessa’s was not.
Before leaving, she placed a business card beside Ryan’s plate.
“For professional reasons,” she said.
That night, Ryan claimed he had an urgent meeting.
Nathan followed him.
Ryan went directly to Vanessa’s apartment.
Olivia watched the live security feed from Margaret’s office. She did not ask Nathan to show her what happened inside.
She did not need the details.
The betrayal was already complete.
“What do you want to do?” Margaret asked gently.
Olivia looked at the photograph of her father on the bookshelf.
“I want every person he deceived to know exactly who he is.”
Margaret nodded.
“And after that?”
“I want my child to grow up in a world where Ryan Mercer has no power over us.”
It was the first time Olivia had spoken the decision aloud.
The marriage was over.

But she would not leave quietly.
Not until the entire scheme was exposed.
