Chapter 1 - The Marriage Everyone Envied

Six months earlier, Olivia Harcourt stood before a wall of windows overlooking Manhattan and learned that her husband had been lying to her for nearly three years.
At thirty-two, Olivia was the only daughter of shipping magnate Theodore Harcourt. Her family’s company, Harcourt Maritime, controlled luxury marinas, cargo terminals, and private shipping routes across three continents.
Newspapers called her an heiress.
Investors called her disciplined.
Employees called her fair.
Ryan Mercer called her fragile.
He had not used that word when they first met.
Back then, Ryan had been charming, ambitious, and attentive. He had worked as a financial consultant hired to restructure one of Harcourt Maritime’s struggling divisions.
Olivia had admired his confidence. Ryan seemed unimpressed by her surname and claimed he wanted nothing from her except a chance to know the woman behind it.
They married eighteen months later.
At their wedding, Ryan had held her hands beneath an arch of white roses and promised that she would never face anything alone again.
For a while, Olivia believed him.
Then her father died.
Theodore’s death had been sudden, leaving Olivia responsible for thousands of employees and a company worth several billion dollars. She worked long hours while grieving privately.
Ryan became increasingly involved in her business affairs.
He volunteered to review financial reports.
He offered to manage investment accounts.
He began attending meetings without Olivia.
Whenever she questioned him, he kissed her forehead and told her she needed rest.
After Olivia became pregnant, his behavior changed further.
He insisted that she avoid stressful meetings.
He told directors to send documents through him.
He began speaking on her behalf.
At first, Olivia mistook control for concern.
Then, one winter afternoon, her father’s former assistant, Margaret Hale, entered Olivia’s office and locked the door behind her.
Margaret was sixty-one, precise, and almost impossible to frighten. She had served the Harcourt family for more than twenty-five years.
That day, her hands trembled.
“We have a serious problem,” she said.
Olivia closed her laptop.
“What happened?”
Margaret placed a stack of financial records on the desk.
“Forty-eight million dollars has been moved through six companies during the past eighteen months.”
Olivia stared at the documents.
“Moved where?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Who authorized it?”
Margaret hesitated.
“The approvals carry your digital signature.”
Olivia felt the baby move beneath her hand.
“I never approved these.”
“I know.”
A silence passed between them.
Olivia looked toward the office door.
“Does Ryan have access to my authorization codes?”
“He claims he does not.”
“But you think he does.”
Margaret sat across from her.
“I think someone has been building a financial structure designed to survive your death.”
Olivia’s blood ran cold.
Margaret turned over the final document.
It was an insurance policy.
The beneficiary was Ryan Mercer.
The amount was one hundred million dollars.

Olivia had never seen it before.
At the bottom was a copy of her signature.
