Chapter 8 - Vanessa’s Bargain

Daniel confronted Vanessa in the mansion’s winter garden.

Emily remained outside the glass doors with Marcus, listening through a hidden transmitter.

Vanessa stood among white roses, wearing the same turquoise dress she had selected for the upcoming gala.

Daniel placed the security image on the table.

“You entered Ruth Carter’s safe-deposit box.”

Vanessa glanced at the image.

“It looks like someone who resembles me.”

“The bank recorded your face from three angles.”

“Then perhaps I was there.”

“You used a dead woman’s identity.”

Vanessa smiled. “You should ask the bank why its security is so poor.”

“What did you take?”

“Nothing that belonged to Emily.”

“The cassette.”

Vanessa’s smile faded.

“Where is it?”

“Somewhere safe.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“You have until the gala to give it to me.”

“Or what?”

“I turn the bank footage over to federal investigators.”

“You would destroy this family over a maid?”

“She may be a member of this family.”

Vanessa looked toward the garden doors.

Emily stepped farther into shadow.

“So she showed you the blood report,” Vanessa said.

Daniel’s silence confirmed it.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You’re wondering whether she is your sister.”

“Is she?”

“Would it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel did not answer.

Vanessa’s expression became cruel.

“You care for her.”

“I care about the truth.”

“You looked at her before you knew the truth.”

“That has nothing to do with this.”

“It has everything to do with this.”

Vanessa walked around the table.

“I can tell you who Emily’s father was.”

“Then tell me.”

“Not for free.”

“What do you want?”

Vanessa stopped directly in front of him.

“At the gala, you will announce our engagement.”

Daniel stared at her.

“No.”

“You will also restore my voting position on the company board.”

“No.”

“And Emily will leave the estate.”

Daniel stood.

“This conversation is over.”

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“If you expose the bank footage, the cassette will be destroyed.”

“Then destroy it.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

Vanessa’s confidence faltered.

Daniel continued.

“You believe the cassette is your only protection. It isn’t. Graham is in custody. Celeste’s documents connect you to the hospital records. Your bank fraud is recorded. And every time you threaten Emily, you show me exactly where to look next.”

Vanessa released him.

“You think Emily is innocent because she speaks softly and washes your glasses.”

“I know you are guilty because I watched you break into a vault.”

“You have always underestimated me.”

“No,” Daniel said. “I overestimated the part of you that could feel shame.”

He left the winter garden.

Emily and Marcus followed him into the corridor.

“That was reckless,” Marcus said.

“It worked.”

“How?”

“She revealed the cassette matters more than the blood report.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“She may know who my father is.”

“She may also be lying.”

Marcus received a message from one of his investigators.

He opened the attached document.

“We found the source of Graham’s recent payments.”

The money came from a company named Blue Meridian Holdings.

Daniel recognized the name immediately.

Blue Meridian had purchased large amounts of Ashbourne Global debt after Alexander’s death. It now possessed enough leverage to force a sale if the company’s stock declined.

“Who owns it?” Emily asked.

“The records lead through six shell corporations,” Marcus said. “But the final authorization signature belongs to Adrian Vale.”

Vanessa’s missing father.

Celeste’s husband.

The man everyone believed had abandoned his family twenty-two years earlier.

Daniel looked toward the winter garden.

“Vanessa isn’t protecting a dead secret.”

“No,” Marcus said. “She is protecting someone who may still be alive.”

That night, a package arrived at Emily’s cottage.

Inside was the stolen cassette.

There was no note.

When Emily played it, she heard Eleanor Ashbourne’s voice.

“The child must never learn that Alexander is not the father. If she does, she will search for Adrian.”

A second voice replied.

It belonged to Celeste.

“And if Adrian searches for her first?”

May you like

Eleanor answered with five words.

“Then Daniel will be the weapon.”
