Chapter 11 - The Gala of Masks

The night of the gala arrived beneath a sky crowded with storm clouds.
Luxury cars passed through the iron gates. Investors, politicians, journalists, and members of the Ashbourne family entered beneath golden lights while musicians played in the ballroom.
Emily wore her usual maid uniform.
Daniel had offered to remove her from service for the evening, but she refused.
“If I behave differently, Vanessa will know.”
The brown leather handbag remained inside the staff cloakroom near the east corridor.
Marcus’s hidden cameras monitored it from three angles.
Vanessa appeared shortly after eight in her turquoise dress.
She greeted guests with a smile so convincing that Emily wondered whether part of her had begun to believe her own performance.
Celeste wore black.
She and Vanessa avoided each other.
Daniel opened the gala with a speech about stability, transparency, and the future of Ashbourne Global. Adrian was not present, but Marcus’s team believed he was watching through a remote connection.
At 8:37 p.m., Vanessa left the ballroom.
Emily saw her reflection disappear from a mirrored column.
Marcus spoke through the hidden earpiece.
“She’s heading east.”
Emily continued serving drinks.
At 8:41, Vanessa entered the staff cloakroom.
The independent cameras captured her removing the diamond necklace from beneath her shawl.
She opened Emily’s bag.
She pushed the necklace under the lining.
Then she paused.
Instead of leaving immediately, she removed Emily’s photograph and silver key.
She studied both objects.
“Put them back,” Emily whispered.
Marcus replied, “Wait.”
Vanessa photographed the key using Celeste’s tablet. She returned the photograph but kept the key for several seconds.
Finally, she replaced it inside the handbag.
She left the room.
At 8:52, Vanessa began the accusation.
“My necklace is missing.”
Guests turned.
Vanessa searched the tables, questioned the staff, and demanded that no one leave the ballroom.
Then she pointed at Emily.
“She was in my room earlier.”
Emily had never entered Vanessa’s room that evening.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Do you have evidence?”
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“I saw her near my jewelry case.”
“That is not evidence.”
Vanessa grabbed Emily’s arm.
“Then let us search her things.”
Emily pulled free.
“Do not touch me.”
The words drew attention from everyone nearby.
Vanessa’s anger sharpened.
“You forget your place.”
“My place is not beneath your hand.”
Vanessa slapped her.
The sound cracked across the ballroom.
Daniel reached them within seconds.
Emily clutched her cheek beside the brown handbag Vanessa had ordered a guard to retrieve.
“You bitch,” Vanessa shouted. “You stole my necklace.”
Daniel’s expression became dangerously calm.
“Open the bag.”
The necklace appeared inside.
Gasps moved through the crowd.
Emily looked directly at Vanessa.
“She put it there. Check the cameras.”
Vanessa pretended outrage.
“Now you accuse me?”
Daniel ordered the surveillance footage displayed.
Vanessa reached discreetly for Celeste’s tablet.
She entered the access code and deleted the original corridor recording.
The presentation screen showed an empty corridor.
Vanessa smiled.
“There. Nothing.”
For a moment, several guests appeared convinced.
Then Marcus activated the independent system.
A second video replaced the first.
Vanessa appeared on-screen planting the necklace.
The crowd erupted.
Daniel faced her.
“You set her up.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“It was edited.”
“The recording is time-stamped and stored on an independent server,” Marcus said as he entered the ballroom.
Vanessa looked toward Celeste.
Her mother did not move to defend her.
Daniel instructed security to close the doors.
Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.
“You don’t understand what she will take from us.”
Emily rose.
“I never wanted anything from you.”
“That’s because you don’t know what belongs to you.”
A prerecorded audio file suddenly began playing through the presentation system.
Vanessa’s voice filled the ballroom.
“Blame Emily before Daniel finds out she really is—”
Vanessa lunged for the tablet.
Daniel caught her wrist.
The audio stopped.
But the tablet screen displayed a new icon.
Vanessa had accidentally entered Celeste’s recovery code while attempting to delete the file.
The code activated a hidden system.
Somewhere beneath the ballroom floor, a mechanism began turning.
The chandelier dimmed.

A section of the wall opened.
And inside the hidden compartment waited Eleanor Ashbourne’s private archive.
