Chapter 6 - Celeste’s Confession

Celeste walked into the light without fear.

She had removed the elegant suit she wore at the mansion and replaced it with dark trousers and a raincoat. Her face looked older beneath the hospital’s harsh emergency lamp.

“Give Graham the key,” she said.

Emily stood between Celeste and Thomas.

“You threatened my father.”

“I prevented Graham from harming him.”

Graham’s grip tightened on the pistol.

“That isn’t what we agreed.”

Celeste did not look at him.

“You were told to bring Thomas here without violence.”

“I did.”

“The officers outside his room would disagree.”

“They’re alive.”

“For now,” Celeste said coldly.

Emily understood.

Celeste and Graham were not true partners.

Each was using the other.

“Why did you come to my parents when I was a child?” Emily asked.

Celeste’s gaze shifted to Thomas.

“I wanted to know whether Eleanor’s plan had worked.”

“What plan?”

“To make the world believe Margaret’s baby died.”

Thomas spoke weakly. “Ruth never trusted you.”

“She was right not to.”

“You told us the danger was gone.”

“I was wrong.”

Emily held up the key.

“What does this protect?”

Celeste took one step closer.

“Your identity.”

“I already know Margaret was my mother.”

“No. You know what Eleanor wanted written in the records.”

Emily stared at her.

“You’re saying Margaret wasn’t my mother?”

“I’m saying records can be changed.”

Graham moved impatiently.

“Enough. Take the key.”

He reached for Emily.

She stepped backward and said, “Fountain.”

The hospital windows exploded inward as Daniel’s security team entered from two directions.

Graham raised the pistol.

Celeste struck his arm with a metal tray.

The shot hit the ceiling.

Daniel rushed toward Emily while Marcus disarmed Graham and forced him to the ground.

Within seconds, the room was secure.

Emily untied Thomas.

He clung to her hand.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“You didn’t do anything.”

“We should have told you.”

“Told me what?”

Thomas looked at Celeste.

She gave a slight shake of her head.

Emily saw it.

“What did my parents know?”

Thomas’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your mother Ruth made me promise.”

“Promise what?”

“That we would never take you back to the mansion.”

Emily felt as though the ruined hospital had tilted beneath her feet.

“You knew where I came from?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you learn?”

“When you were six. The woman came with the blue gloves.”

Celeste lowered her head.

Thomas continued.

“She told us your birth family had discovered you were alive. She said Eleanor was dead and could no longer protect you.”

Eleanor Ashbourne had died when Emily was twelve, not six.

Emily looked at Celeste.

“You lied to them.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor had begun changing her will.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What change?”

Celeste turned toward him.

“She intended to divide control of Ashbourne Global between two heirs.”

“You and my father?”

“No.”

Celeste looked at Emily.

“You and Daniel.”

The room went silent.

Daniel’s shock matched Emily’s.

“That makes no sense,” he said. “Emily would have been a child.”

“Eleanor planned for the trust to activate when both heirs turned thirty.”

Daniel had turned thirty four years earlier.

Emily had turned thirty only six months ago.

The company’s unexplained legal changes had begun at the same time.

Daniel suddenly understood.

“The frozen shares.”

Celeste nodded.

“What frozen shares?” Emily asked.

“Thirty-one percent of Ashbourne Global was moved into a dormant trust,” Daniel said. “No beneficiary was listed in the documents I could access.”

“The beneficiary was hidden,” Celeste explained. “Eleanor believed secrecy would protect Emily.”

“Instead, it made her a target,” Marcus said.

Graham laughed from the floor.

“You still don’t understand. The trust doesn’t belong to Emily.”

Celeste’s face hardened.

“Do not speak.”

Graham smiled at her.

“Tell them why Eleanor needed two heirs. Tell them whose blood actually runs through the maid’s veins.”

Daniel grabbed Graham by the collar.

“Who is she?”

May you like

Graham looked directly at Emily.

“The only person who can prove Daniel Ashbourne has no legal right to his own name.”
