Chapter 10 - The Necklace Plan

From their position outside the warehouse, Emily could not hear the conversation between Vanessa and Adrian.

Marcus used a directional microphone.

Adrian’s voice crackled through the receiver.

“The necklace must be found in Emily’s possession during the gala.”

Vanessa looked down at the diamonds.

“Daniel will check the cameras.”

“Then control the cameras.”

“Graham is in custody.”

“You still have access through your mother’s tablet.”

Vanessa hesitated.

“What happens after she is arrested?”

“The trustees will suspend her claim.”

“And my board position?”

“You will receive everything I promised.”

“Daniel will never forgive me.”

Adrian smiled.

“Daniel will not remain in control long enough for forgiveness to matter.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

His jaw tightened, but he remained focused on the warehouse.

Vanessa asked, “What if Emily proves the necklace was planted?”

“Then use the recording.”

“Which part?”

“The part that makes Daniel believe she is his sister.”

“He already suspects that.”

“Suspicion creates distance. Public humiliation creates permanence.”

Vanessa closed her hand around the necklace.

“You said Emily was dangerous. She doesn’t even understand what she owns.”

“That is what makes her dangerous. Innocent people often open doors without realizing who stands behind them.”

Daniel whispered to Marcus, “Record everything.”

Marcus adjusted the device.

A truck passed on the nearby road, briefly drowning out the warehouse conversation.

When the sound cleared, Adrian was holding a black tablet.

“Eleanor’s final archive is hidden inside Ashbourne Mansion,” he said. “The silver key activates it.”

Vanessa shook her head. “We searched the mansion.”

“You searched rooms. Eleanor hid mechanisms.”

“Where?”

“The ballroom.”

Emily remembered the hidden file name that would later appear on the presentation system.

Eleanor Ashbourne Final Testimony.

Adrian continued.

“The gala gives you access to every system in the house. Plant the necklace. Trigger the accusation. Force Emily to reveal the key.”

“And then?”

“Once the archive opens, send me the file.”

Vanessa looked toward the warehouse entrance as if she sensed someone watching.

Marcus lowered the microphone.

They retreated before she could see them.

Back at the mansion, Daniel wanted to cancel the gala and have Adrian arrested.

Marcus disagreed.

“We have a recording of a conversation, but Adrian has not personally committed the theft. He can claim he was warning Vanessa about a hypothetical plan.”

“He kidnapped Thomas through Graham.”

“We need Graham to testify.”

“And if he refuses?”

“Then we let Adrian believe the plan is working.”

Emily understood what Marcus was proposing.

“We allow Vanessa to plant the necklace.”

Daniel immediately said no.

“We control the cameras,” Marcus explained. “We record the entire act. Emily will never be in legal danger.”

“She will be publicly accused and humiliated.”

Emily met Daniel’s eyes.

“I can handle humiliation.”

“You shouldn’t have to.”

“No. But if Adrian believes he has won, he may reveal where the archive is.”

Daniel turned away.

The thought of deliberately placing Emily in the center of the trap clearly angered him.

Emily stepped closer.

“For years, these people controlled my life because I didn’t know they existed. I’m done being protected by silence.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You sound like Eleanor.”

“I hope that isn’t an insult.”

“It may be the highest compliment available in this family.”

They designed the counterplan.

Marcus would install an independent camera system Adrian could not access. Daniel would allow Vanessa to believe the original cameras remained under her control. Emily would carry the brown handbag Adrian had seen her use every day.

Celeste was not informed of every detail.

Daniel no longer trusted her completely.

Yet when the meeting ended, Celeste approached Emily alone.

“Vanessa will not stop at the necklace.”

“I know.”

“She believes you replaced her.”

“I never asked to.”

“That does not matter to someone who has spent her life fearing replacement.”

Emily studied her mother.

The word still felt strange.

“Can she be saved?”

Celeste’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I once believed everyone could be saved if they were loved enough.”

“And now?”

“Now I know love cannot help someone who treats every open hand as something to bite.”

She gave Emily a folded note.

It contained a sequence of numbers.

“What is this?”

“A recovery code for my tablet.”

“Why do I need it?”

“Because Vanessa will take the tablet during the gala.”

“How do you know?”

Celeste looked toward the ballroom.

“Because Adrian taught her his favorite lesson.”

May you like

“What lesson?”

“When everyone watches the accusation, no one watches the thief.”
