Chapter 12 - Eleanor’s Final Testimony

The hidden compartment contained no gold, jewelry, or paper documents.
It contained a narrow metal console built decades earlier.
At its center was an opening shaped exactly like Emily’s silver key.
Every person in the ballroom turned toward her.
Vanessa saw the key hanging beneath Emily’s collar.
She moved first.
Emily stepped back, but Vanessa seized the chain.
The clasp broke.
Daniel pulled Vanessa away as the key fell onto the marble floor.
Celeste reached it before anyone else.
For one terrible moment, Emily thought she might run.
Instead, Celeste placed the key in Emily’s hand.
“This choice should have been yours from the beginning.”
Emily approached the console.
Marcus warned that the archive could contain corrupted files or security traps, but Emily inserted the key.
The machine awakened.
A projector descended from the ceiling.
Eleanor Ashbourne appeared on the ballroom screen.
She was older than in the photographs, seated in the same library where Daniel had questioned Celeste. Her voice was steady.
“My name is Eleanor Victoria Ashbourne. This testimony is to be opened only when Emily Carter enters Ashbourne Mansion by her own choice and activates the archive using the key placed with her at birth.”
Guests whispered.
Emily’s heart pounded.
Eleanor continued.
“Emily was born to Celeste Vale on October 14, 1998. Her biological father is Adrian Vale.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“The child was hidden because Adrian had attempted to murder Margaret Ashbourne after she discovered his theft from the family trust.”
Images appeared beside Eleanor.
Bank transfers.
Letters.
A photograph of Adrian near Margaret’s damaged boat.
“Margaret survived the explosion long enough to help conceal Emily’s identity. She later died from her injuries. Public records were altered to protect the child.”
Celeste began crying silently.
“I created a trust for Emily because Adrian’s theft reduced the inheritance that should have belonged to both Daniel and Margaret’s descendants. As Margaret left no surviving child, I assigned part of her intended share to the infant she died protecting.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
The trust was not based on blood.
It was based on Margaret’s final act.
Eleanor’s recording continued.
“Daniel Alexander Ashbourne is the lawful son of Alexander Ashbourne. Emily Carter is not his sister by blood.”
A complicated relief passed through Daniel’s face before he quickly hid it.
Vanessa noticed.
Her expression hardened again.
“The trust grants Emily thirty-one percent ownership of Ashbourne Global upon her thirtieth birthday. However, ownership remains suspended until she proves that she has not acted under Adrian Vale’s control.”
Emily stared at the screen.
“How am I supposed to prove that?”
As though answering, Eleanor said:
“If Emily opens this archive while Adrian remains free, the final stage will begin. The company accounts will lock, concealed evidence will be released, and Adrian will be forced to reveal himself.”
Daniel turned toward Marcus.
“Check the accounts.”
Marcus opened his phone.
“All major Ashbourne accounts are frozen.”
Guests began speaking at once.
Board members demanded explanations. Investors reached for their phones. Security guards moved toward the exits.
Then the mansion lights went out.
Glass shattered.
Someone screamed.
Emergency lighting returned.
Vanessa had disappeared.
So had Celeste’s tablet.
Emily checked the broken chain in her hand.
The silver key was gone.
On the presentation screen, Eleanor’s recording had frozen.
A message appeared beneath her image.
THE WRONG DAUGHTER WAS BURIED.
Daniel read it aloud.
“What does that mean?”
Celeste stared at the screen.
“I don’t know.”
Emily looked at her mother.
“You knew about almost everything else.”
“Not this.”
Marcus checked the hidden compartment.
A small drawer had opened beneath the console.
Inside lay a death certificate.
It belonged to Vanessa Vale.

The document stated that Vanessa had died at Saint Catherine’s Hospital on October 14, 1998.
The same night Emily was born.
