Chapter 9 - The Baby Shower

Saturday arrived bright and warm.

At noon, the house filled with flowers.

At one, catering trays arrived.

At one-thirty, Vanessa changed into her pale-blue maternity dress and occupied Claire's upstairs bedroom for photographs without asking.

At one-forty-five, Margaret removed Claire's wheelchair from the living room.

Claire watched from the hallway.

"Why are you moving it?"

"It ruins the pictures."

"I need it."

"You can use the sofa."

"How am I getting there?"

Daniel appeared.

"I'll help you."

Claire looked at him.

He knew.

All week she had wondered how far he would go.

Now she would see.

Rebecca had already arrived.

Margaret did not recognize her.

Neither did Vanessa.

Daniel did.

He saw Rebecca across the room at 1:52 p.m.

Claire watched the blood leave his face.

Rebecca sat quietly in a cream blazer, speaking to no one.

Daniel approached Claire immediately.

"Who invited that woman?"

Claire followed his gaze.

"Which woman?"

"The blonde one."

"I don't know."

"Claire."

"Maybe Vanessa invited her."

Daniel walked toward Margaret.

Claire hid a smile.

The cameras were running.

Walter waited three houses away.

June was at the party.

So was Claire's obstetric nurse, invited privately as a friend.

Rebecca had insisted.

If Claire experienced contractions or distress, everything stopped.

At 2:07, Margaret announced that everyone should gather near the gift table.

Vanessa opened presents.

Blankets.

Bottles.

Baby clothes.

An expensive stroller.

Claire remained near the sofa.

Her wheelchair had still not been returned.

Daniel had helped her to the floor using cushions beneath her knees.

It was humiliating.

It was also exactly where Rebecca predicted they would place her.

Guests began noticing.

One woman whispered to another.

June's expression looked murderous.

Claire gave her a tiny shake of the head.

Not yet.

At 2:31, Vanessa opened the final normal gift.

Margaret stood.

"We have one more family tradition."

Claire almost admired the performance.

Vanessa smiled.

"For Claire."

Several guests clapped uncertainly.

Daniel's hands tightened.

Margaret walked behind Claire.

"Sit straighter."

Claire adjusted herself.

"My legs hurt."

Margaret bent toward her ear.

"Don't embarrass us."

Claire looked up.

"I thought pain was the apology."

Margaret froze.

Claire had repeated Daniel's words before he had spoken them at the party.

Margaret did not understand.

Daniel did.

His eyes narrowed.

Claire looked away.

Then Margaret took the cushions.

The moment began exactly as Rebecca predicted.

She ripped them from beneath Claire's legs.

Claire dropped.

Margaret insulted her.

Daniel moved the chair.

Then came his line.

"Your pain is the apology."

He said it because Margaret had told him to.

A performance.

A humiliation ritual.

Claire looked at the clock camera.

Then at Daniel.

She fought back.

Twisted his wrist.

Drove her cast into his shin.

Knocked Margaret onto the sofa with a cushion.

"Touch me again and I'll make you crawl."

Silence.

Vanessa stepped forward.

The empty box appeared.

Pen.

Documents.

Claire's name.

The transfer.

Then she saw the second name.

Rebecca Elaine Hayes.

Rebecca stood.

Daniel's face collapsed.

The room shifted.

Not physically.

Morally.

Until that second, many guests had assumed there was some family explanation for Claire's treatment.

Now they saw fear.

Not in Claire.

In the Bennetts.

Rebecca crossed the living room.

Vanessa snatched the document.

Rebecca removed the black envelope.

"This belongs to you."

Daniel stepped forward.

"No."

Rebecca turned.

"Sit down, Daniel."

He stared at her.

"You can't be here."

Rebecca's voice remained calm.

"Interesting choice of words."

Margaret stood slowly.

"You."

Rebecca looked at her.

"Hello, Margaret."

Several guests exchanged confused looks.

Claire reached for the envelope.

Daniel grabbed Rebecca's wrist.

That was his final mistake.

Walter entered through the open front door.

Behind him came two uniformed police officers.

Not rushing.

Not shouting.

Simply present.

Daniel released Rebecca instantly.

Margaret's face went white.

Vanessa backed away.

One officer said, "Mr. Bennett, step away from both women."

Daniel looked at Claire.

"You set this up."

Claire held the envelope.

"No."

She looked at the tiny camera disguised inside the clock.

"You did."

Margaret stared at it.

Her mouth opened.

Rebecca said, "Before anyone leaves, I suggest you remember that this room has been recorded since noon."

A guest gasped.

Vanessa whispered, "Mom?"

Margaret turned on her.

"Give me the transfer."

Vanessa clutched it.

"No."

"Give it to me."

"No."

Rebecca watched quietly.

Margaret's voice rose.

"Vanessa."

"You said Rebecca was dead."

The entire room went silent.

Rebecca raised one eyebrow.

Margaret realized what Vanessa had admitted.

Too late.

Claire looked at the envelope.

"Can I open it now?"

Rebecca nodded.

Claire broke the seal.

Inside were three documents.

The original Hayes Family Trust agreement.

A notarized letter written by Thomas Hayes.

And a sealed DNA report.

Claire frowned.

"What is this?"

Rebecca's eyes softened.

"The reason I couldn't give you the envelope until I was standing beside you."

Claire looked at the DNA report.

"What does it prove?"

Rebecca glanced at Margaret.

Then Daniel.

Then back at Claire.

"Open your father's letter first."

Claire unfolded it.

The handwriting nearly broke her.

She remembered it.

Birthday cards.

Notes in lunchboxes.

Her name written on school forms.

My dearest Claire,

If you are reading this, then I failed to give you the peaceful life I wanted for you.

Claire's vision blurred.

She continued.

The trust I created is not a gift of wealth. It is a shield. Money without truth becomes another kind of prison.

If Rebecca is with you, trust her before you trust any document bearing my name.

There is one final fact that Richard Bennett must never control.

Claire looked up.

"What fact?"

May you like

Rebecca answered.

"Your father had another child."
