THE WOMAN IN THE CREAM BLAZER / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Price of Silence

Margaret made bail two days later.

She was forbidden from contacting Claire.

Daniel was charged the following week with fraudulent document access and forgery.

His attorney immediately offered cooperation.

Margaret called him a traitor through her lawyer.

The Bennett family began collapsing exactly as Rebecca predicted.

But not because Claire attacked them.

They did it themselves.

Daniel provided investigators with emails showing Margaret had hired a handyman to loosen the railing brackets.

The handyman admitted Margaret told him Claire needed "a scare."

He insisted he did not know oil would later be applied to the step.

Margaret denied everything.

Then Vanessa cooperated.

She turned over family messages.

Financial statements.

Copies of the transfer documents.

And one devastating voice message from Margaret.

If Claire refuses at the hospital, we make sure she's dependent enough to sign at home.

The prosecution no longer needed Claire to prove intent.

The evidence spoke.

Eric, Vanessa's husband, was investigated separately for embezzlement.

He disappeared for three days before returning with an attorney.

The missing Bennett funds were mostly gone.

Bad investments.

Private debts.

A failed cryptocurrency venture.

Vanessa filed for divorce.

Claire felt no satisfaction hearing that.

Only fatigue.

Her own divorce papers were filed nine days after the shower.

Daniel requested a private meeting.

Claire refused twice.

The third time, Walter suggested she consider it.

"Why?"

"Because custody matters are coming."

Claire's hand instinctively moved to her stomach.

"He's not taking my son."

"No one said that."

"He protected the woman who injured me while pregnant."

"Which matters."

"Then why meet him?"

"Because hearing what he wants before court can be useful."

Claire agreed on strict terms.

Public conference room.

Attorneys present.

Rebecca nearby.

Daniel entered looking older.

No charcoal polo.

No confident smile.

Dark circles under his eyes.

He sat across from Claire.

For a long time neither spoke.

Finally Daniel said, "You look better."

Claire did not answer.

"I heard the fractures are healing."

"Why are we here?"

Daniel looked at Walter.

"Can I talk to my wife alone?"

Claire answered.

"No."

"Claire."

"You lost alone."

He absorbed that.

"I deserve that."

"Yes."

Daniel stared at the table.

"I loved you."

Claire felt something painful move inside her.

"I know."

He looked surprised.

"You do?"

"That's what makes it worse."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I didn't know who you were when we met."

"Your mother confirmed that."

"I fell in love with you before I knew about the trust."

"Then you found out."

He nodded.

"When?"

"Seven months before our wedding."

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

Seven months.

He could have told her.

He chose not to.

"My father had left records," Daniel continued. "Mom found them after he died. Your name was there. At first she told me to end the relationship."

"Why?"

"She was afraid Rebecca would use you against us."

"And then?"

"Mom realized if we married..."

"You might access the trust."

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I told myself that wasn't why I stayed."

"But you hid Rebecca's letter."

"Yes."

"You stole trust records."

"Yes."

"You helped prepare the transfer."

"Yes."

"You knew your mother loosened the railing."

Daniel's face twisted.

"Not until after."

"And when you knew?"

"I panicked."

"You protected her."

"I thought if the truth came out, she'd go to prison."

Claire stared at him.

"What did you think would happen to me?"

"I don't know."

"Exactly."

Daniel wiped his face.

"I kept telling myself I could fix it."

"By stealing my trust?"

"By getting the debt released. By keeping the family from collapsing. Then I would tell you."

"When?"

He had no answer.

Claire leaned back.

"Daniel, do you know what I wanted the morning I fell?"

He looked at her.

"I wanted you to install a second handrail."

His eyes filled again.

"That's it. I wasn't trying to destroy your family. I didn't even know the money existed."

"I know."

"Your mother nearly killed my child to stop me from doing something I had never considered doing."

"I know."

"And you stood beside her."

Daniel whispered, "I know."

The baby shifted beneath Claire's blouse.

Daniel looked at her stomach.

"Can I..."

"No."

His hand stopped.

Claire's voice softened slightly.

"You may someday have a relationship with your son."

Daniel looked up.

"But not on your terms."

"What does that mean?"

"It means supervised contact unless a court decides otherwise."

Pain crossed his face.

"I'm his father."

"Then start acting like one."

"How?"

"Tell the complete truth."

Daniel frowned.

"I have."

"No."

Claire watched him carefully.

"Who gave Margaret the name of the doctor she planned to use to declare me incompetent?"

Daniel went still.

Walter looked up.

Rebecca had suspected someone else was involved.

Daniel stared at Claire.

"I can't."

Claire's expression hardened.

"Then we're done."

She moved her wheelchair backward.

"Wait."

Daniel covered his face.

Then whispered a name.

"Dr. Nathan Cole."

Walter wrote it down.

Claire frowned.

"Who is he?"

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

"Ask her."

Rebecca's face had gone pale.

Claire noticed.

"Rebecca?"

Rebecca did not answer.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"She hasn't told you everything either."

Claire looked from one to the other.

"What haven't you told me?"

Rebecca's jaw tightened.

Daniel said, "Nathan Cole was the psychiatrist who signed the competency papers on your mother."

Claire froze.

"My mother was declared incompetent?"

"For eleven months before she died."

Claire looked at Rebecca.

"You told me she was afraid."

"She was."

"You didn't tell me someone legally took control of her."

Rebecca closed her eyes.

"Claire."

"Who?"

May you like

Daniel answered.

"Margaret Bennett."
