Chapter 7 - Rebecca Hayes

Rebecca did not come to the house.

Claire demanded it.

Rebecca refused.

Not yet.

Their first real conversation happened through an encrypted video call while Daniel believed Claire was asleep.

The woman on screen looked exactly like the guest Claire would later see at Vanessa's baby shower.

Dark-blonde hair.

Cream blouse.

Calm eyes that missed nothing.

Claire had rehearsed a hundred questions.

When Rebecca's face appeared, only one came out.

"Why did everyone tell me you were dead?"

Rebecca's expression shifted.

"Because for a while, that was safer."

"For who?"

"You."

Claire almost ended the call.

"Don't."

Rebecca's voice softened.

"Claire, I know what that answer sounds like."

"It sounds like eighteen years of abandonment."

"Yes."

"You were my father's sister."

"Yes."

"My mother told me you died in a car accident."

"I know."

"Why?"

Rebecca looked away for the first time.

"Because your mother was afraid."

"Of the Bennetts?"

"Of several people."

"Did Richard Bennett kill my father?"

"No."

The certainty surprised Claire.

"Then what happened?"

"Your father had a congenital heart condition that had never been diagnosed. Stress made it worse. He died during the lawsuit."

"So there was no murder?"

"No murder."

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

"Then why all the secrets?"

"Because crimes don't have to be murder to destroy families."

Rebecca told her the rest.

Thomas Hayes and Richard Bennett had once been partners.

Thomas created medical patents.

Richard understood finance.

Together they built a profitable network.

Then Richard began borrowing against shared assets without permission.

When Thomas discovered it, millions were missing.

Patents had been pledged as collateral.

Companies existed on paper that Thomas had never authorized.

Margaret, working as Richard's corporate secretary and later operations director, had signed several of the transfers.

Rebecca, an attorney with forensic accounting experience, uncovered the scheme.

Thomas sued.

Three weeks later he died.

Without Thomas, the lawsuit collapsed into years of settlements.

Richard retained much of his empire.

Rebecca secured one major protection.

The Hayes Family Trust.

"What is it worth?" Claire asked.

"Today?"

"Yes."

"More than Daniel told you."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"How much?"

"Approximately thirty-eight million in assets and claims."

Claire forgot to breathe.

"Thirty-eight?"

"The fourteen-million-dollar note is only part of it."

"Why didn't I know?"

"Your mother did."

Claire's eyes filled with anger.

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

"Because Richard threatened to bury her in litigation until you were adults."

"I was an only child."

"I know."

Rebecca paused.

"Your mother was scared. She agreed to keep the trust dormant until you turned thirty and had a child, because those were the protections your father had written into the final amendments."

"Why the child?"

"Thomas wanted to prevent any spouse from marrying you solely to access the assets."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"That worked well."

"He couldn't predict Daniel."

"Apparently everyone else could."

Rebecca absorbed that.

"I should have found you sooner."

"You had twenty years."

"I know."

"Did you send me the letter two years ago?"

"Yes."

"Daniel took it."

"I know now."

"Why didn't you come after that?"

"Because the tracking showed it had been accepted at your address. I believed you had chosen not to respond."

Claire stared at her.

"You thought I ignored thirty-eight million dollars?"

"I thought perhaps your mother had told you a version of the story that made you want nothing to do with me."

"My mother died when I was eighteen."

Rebecca's face tightened with pain.

"I attended the funeral."

Claire froze.

"What?"

"From across the street."

"That's not attending."

"No."

"Did you ever intend to actually speak to me?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"When I could prove the Bennetts had stopped monitoring the trust."

Claire frowned.

"Monitoring it?"

"Richard died, but Margaret never stopped trying to locate the original trust agreement."

"Why?"

"Because the debt against Bennett Capital becomes enforceable automatically when control transfers to you."

Claire thought of Daniel.

"If I do nothing after my son is born..."

"You can foreclose on several Bennett properties."

"Do I have to?"

"No."

"So all of this could have been solved by asking me."

Rebecca's expression darkened.

"Yes."

Claire almost laughed.

"Margaret broke my legs instead."

"I don't know that yet."

"I do."

"Knowing and proving are different."

Claire looked at her casts.

"How do we prove it?"

"Carefully."

Rebecca explained her plan.

Do not leave the house suddenly.

Do not tell Daniel she had contacted Rebecca.

Do not sign anything.

Document everything.

Record only where legally permitted.

Keep medical and financial records off-site.

Most importantly, allow the Bennetts to believe Claire still did not understand the trust.

"They're going to push harder," Rebecca said.

"They already locked me in a bedroom."

"Did you document it?"

"I filmed the locked door."

"Good."

"You sound happy."

"I'm happy he is becoming careless."

Claire glanced toward the hallway.

Daniel had finally unlocked the bedroom after two hours, pretending the lock had jammed.

"What's in the black envelope?"

Rebecca's face changed.

"How do you know about it?"

"I saw it in the records room."

"Samuel told you not to open it."

"He did."

"Listen to him."

"Why?"

"Because the envelope is your father's final contingency."

"Meaning?"

"I can't explain over the phone."

"Rebecca."

"If I tell you now and Daniel discovers you know, he may change tactics."

"Change tactics from breaking my legs and locking me in a room?"

Rebecca's jaw tightened.

"Claire, I am trying to keep you alive."

The word hung between them.

Claire touched her stomach.

"Do you think he would kill me?"

Rebecca did not answer immediately.

"I don't think Daniel wants you dead."

"That's comforting."

"I think Margaret might decide your incapacity is more useful than your cooperation."

Claire's blood chilled.

"What does that mean?"

"If you are legally declared unable to manage your affairs..."

"Daniel could control things."

"Temporarily."

Claire looked at the bedroom door.

"That's why they keep saying I'm confused."

"Yes."

"The head injury."

"Yes."

"The medication."

"Yes."

"The pregnancy."

"Yes."

Claire thought of every conversation.

Every time Daniel said she was emotional.

Every time Margaret said she was imagining things.

They were building a record.

Rebecca continued.

"The baby shower gives us an opportunity."

Claire looked at her.

"What opportunity?"

"They think public pressure will make you sign."

"How do you know?"

"Because Vanessa ordered a custom signing box."

Claire remembered the photograph.

"The empty gift box."

"Yes."

"What am I signing?"

"An assignment of beneficial interest."

"To Daniel?"

"Indirectly. To a family entity controlled by Daniel, Margaret and Vanessa."

Claire shook her head in disbelief.

"They're turning theft into party entertainment."

"They want witnesses who believe you signed voluntarily."

Claire's expression hardened.

"So we give them witnesses."

Rebecca nodded.

"Exactly."

Claire stared at the woman she had believed dead.

"What do you need me to do?"

"For the next ten days, let them think you're scared."

Claire looked at her casts.

"I am scared."

"Good."

May you like

Rebecca's voice softened.

"Use the truth. Just don't give them all of it."
