Chapter 10 - The Second Daughter

Claire stared at Rebecca.
"My father had another child?"
Rebecca nodded.
The room around them had become strangely distant.
Guests.
Police.
Daniel.
Margaret.
Everything blurred.
"Who?"
Rebecca looked toward the DNA report.
"Read it."
Claire's fingers shook as she opened the pages.
The report compared stored genetic material belonging to Thomas Hayes with two living individuals.
Claire Elizabeth Hayes Bennett.
And another name.
Emily Rose Carter.
Probability of biological paternity exceeded 99.9 percent.
Claire whispered, "I have a sister."
Rebecca nodded.
"Half-sister."
"Where is she?"
"Alive."
"Does she know?"
"Not everything."
Claire looked at the trust document.
"Is she part of this?"
"Yes."
Margaret suddenly said, "This is irrelevant."
Rebecca turned.
"No, Margaret. This is the part you've been looking for since 2004."
Margaret's face changed.
Daniel looked between them.
"What is she talking about?"
Rebecca smiled without warmth.
"Your mother didn't tell you?"
"Tell me what?"
"The trust never belonged entirely to Claire."
Claire stared.
Rebecca explained.
Thomas discovered the existence of his second daughter shortly before he died.
Emily was the result of a relationship before he married Claire's mother.
Thomas had not known about the pregnancy.
When he learned the truth, he amended the trust.
Half of the beneficial interest would transfer to Claire after the birth of her first child.
The remaining half belonged to Emily once she was located and verified.
"If I signed Vanessa's assignment..." Claire said.
Rebecca nodded.
"You would only transfer your half."
Margaret whispered, "No."
Rebecca looked at her.
"That's why you needed the original document."
Margaret's composure cracked.
"The amendment was never filed."
"It didn't have to be."
"It's invalid."
"Walter?"
The attorney stepped forward.
"It was properly executed, notarized and accepted by the trustee."
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
Daniel turned to his mother.
"You told me Claire controlled all of it."
Margaret ignored him.
Vanessa looked frightened.
"Mom, what did you know?"
"Be quiet."
"What did you know?"
"I said be quiet."
The police officer interrupted.
"Everyone needs to lower their voices."
Claire barely heard them.
She had a sister.
All her life, she believed she had been alone.
No parents.
No siblings.
No extended family except the Bennetts after marriage.
Now somewhere existed a woman carrying part of the same history.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Claire asked Rebecca.
"I only confirmed Emily's identity last month."
"Does she know about me?"
"She knows your name."
"Why isn't she here?"
Rebecca glanced toward the officers.
"Because unlike us, she has never been involved with the Bennetts. I wanted to keep it that way until today."
Claire looked at Daniel.
He seemed stunned.
Some part of him was calculating already.
If Claire owned only half, their plans had always been impossible.
Margaret understood too.
Her entire scheme had been based on incomplete information.
The old trust box Daniel stole from storage had not contained the final amendment.
Rebecca had removed it years earlier.
Margaret's face twisted.
"You let us think the box was complete."
Rebecca answered, "I let thieves steal the wrong papers."
Vanessa stepped backward.
"Thieves?"
Rebecca looked directly at her.
"Your brother used fraudulent identification to obtain restricted trust records."
Daniel snapped, "I signed my own name."
"After submitting authorization bearing Claire's electronic signature."
Claire turned to him.
"What?"
Daniel said nothing.
Rebecca continued.
"He forged your approval."
Walter held up a file.
"We have the access logs."
Daniel looked toward the police.
The officer said, "Mr. Bennett, I strongly suggest you stop talking."
Margaret pointed at Claire.
"This entire thing is because of her."
Claire stared.
Margaret's control was disappearing.
"You mean my broken legs?"
"You could have signed at the hospital."
June stepped forward.
"Did you just hear yourself?"
Margaret looked around.
For the first time she seemed to realize that the room was no longer her family audience.
These were witnesses.
People were staring at her with disgust.
One guest had begun crying.
Another stood beside June.
Claire said quietly, "Tell them, Margaret."
Margaret's eyes locked on hers.
"Tell them what?"
"Why you loosened the railing."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vanessa whispered, "Mom?"
Margaret stiffened.
"I did no such thing."
Claire reached for the prepaid phone she had hidden in the pocket of her blouse.
She pressed play.
Daniel's recorded voice filled the room.
I never agreed to the stairs.
Then Margaret.
We're almost finished.
Daniel.
You loosened the railing.
Margaret.
Keep your voice down.
The recording continued.
Furniture polish.
Broken legs.
Can't run to lawyers.
Every word.
Every silence.
Every betrayal.
Vanessa slowly sat down.
Daniel covered his face.
Margaret did not move.
When the recording ended, Claire said, "That's why the police are here."
The officer stepped toward Margaret.
"Margaret Bennett, we need you to come with us."
Margaret finally looked frightened.
"You can't arrest me based on that."
"We also have the damaged original railing hardware recovered from a trash container owned by your son's contractor."
Daniel looked up.
Claire had not known that.
Rebecca had.
The officer continued.
"And a receipt for the lubricant used on the stairs purchased with your card the morning before the incident."
Margaret's face went slack.
Claire looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca gave a tiny nod.
Margaret was handcuffed.
No one spoke as she was led toward the door.
Then she stopped beside Claire.
"This will destroy Daniel."
Claire looked at her husband.
"No."
Her voice was calm.
"You did that."
The door closed behind Margaret.
Daniel stood in the middle of the baby shower surrounded by scattered gifts.
Claire's husband.
Her baby's father.
A man who had not caused the fall but had protected the woman who did.
He looked at Claire.
"I can explain."
Claire removed her wedding ring.
"No."
May you like
She placed it inside Vanessa's empty decorative box.
"You've explained enough."
