Chapter 8 - Ten Days of Obedience

Claire became agreeable.

Margaret loved it.

Daniel trusted it.

Vanessa exploited it.

That was the hardest part.

Claire stopped arguing when the baby shower decorators moved furniture through her house.

She apologized when Margaret complained about the wheelchair scratching the floor.

She thanked Daniel when he brought food.

She let Vanessa choose where Claire would sit during the party.

On the carpet.

"Photos will look better if the furniture isn't cluttered," Vanessa explained.

Claire lowered her eyes.

"Okay."

Vanessa smiled.

Submission pleased her more than kindness ever had.

Meanwhile, Claire documented everything.

Rebecca arranged for a tiny motion-activated camera to be installed inside a decorative clock facing the living room.

Another recorded the hallway.

June held copies of Claire's medical records.

Samuel duplicated all Hayes files.

Walter Sloane reappeared after disappearing for several days.

He had not been harmed.

Rebecca had told him to leave town after Claire's phone call because someone had been watching his office.

He became Claire's independent attorney.

The strongest evidence came unexpectedly.

Daniel.

At 11:40 one night, Claire woke to hear him arguing downstairs.

She moved quietly into the hallway using the wheelchair.

His voice came from the kitchen.

"We can't keep doing this."

Margaret answered.

"We're almost finished."

"I never agreed to the stairs."

Claire stopped breathing.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"I told you to scare her."

"And she slipped."

"You loosened the railing."

"Keep your voice down."

Claire's hands shook.

Her prepaid phone was already recording.

Daniel said, "She could have lost the baby."

Margaret's answer came without hesitation.

"But she didn't."

Claire pressed a fist to her mouth.

Daniel paced.

"You put oil on the step."

"Furniture polish."

"What difference does that make?"

"It means stop being dramatic."

"She broke both legs."

"And now she can't run to lawyers."

Silence.

Claire felt tears burn her eyes.

Not because she had doubted it.

Because certainty hurt differently.

Daniel spoke again.

"What happens after she signs?"

"We refinance."

"And Rebecca?"

"Rebecca is gone."

"You don't know that."

"She hasn't appeared in twenty years."

"What if Claire contacts her?"

"She doesn't know Rebecca exists."

Claire almost laughed.

Margaret continued.

"Once the assignment is signed, the trust's protector can't stop a voluntary transfer."

"Are you sure?"

"Your father paid enough lawyers to be sure."

Daniel sounded exhausted.

"I hate this."

Margaret's voice became cold.

"You like your house?"

Silence.

"Your company?"

Silence.

"Your wife?"

Another silence.

Then Margaret said, "You should have thought about all of this before marrying the Hayes girl."

Claire's heart stopped.

Daniel replied, "Don't call her that."

"Why? That's what she was when you met her."

"I didn't know who she was at first."

"But once you did, you stayed."

Claire closed her eyes.

That was the question that had tormented her.

Had Daniel known from the beginning?

Apparently not.

Somehow that made the betrayal worse.

Because there had been a period when he loved her without calculation.

Then he learned.

And chose the money.

Margaret continued.

"One signature, Daniel. Then this ends."

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

"And if she refuses?"

Margaret answered.

"Then we prove she isn't competent."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"How?"

"The doctor I told you about."

"I said no."

"He owes Vanessa's husband."

"No."

"Daniel."

"No psychiatric commitment. No fake diagnosis."

"Then make sure she signs."

Claire rolled backward silently.

She returned to the bedroom.

Locked the phone inside a false-bottom cosmetics bag.

Then she cried.

For ten minutes.

Not because she was helpless.

Because she finally understood Daniel completely.

He had not loosened the railing.

He had not poured polish on the stairs.

He had also done nothing after learning Margaret had.

He had protected her.

Not Claire.

Margaret.

The next morning, Daniel made pancakes.

Claire watched him place blueberries on her plate.

"I'm sorry I've been difficult," she said.

He looked surprised.

"You're not difficult."

"I know I've been suspicious."

Daniel sat across from her.

"You went through something traumatic."

Claire nodded.

"I don't want us fighting."

"Neither do I."

She reached across the table and took his hand.

For half a second, she remembered who they had been.

Then she remembered the kitchen recording.

"I trust you," Claire whispered.

Daniel squeezed her fingers.

The lie made him smile.

That afternoon Rebecca called.

"We have enough for criminal charges relating to the fall."

Claire looked out the window.

"Not yet."

Rebecca frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I want the signing attempt."

"We don't need it."

"I do."

"For what?"

"For everyone."

"Claire."

"They've spent weeks telling people I'm unstable. Selfish. Dramatic. I want twenty witnesses watching them put the papers in front of me."

Rebecca studied her.

"This isn't about evidence."

"No."

"It's about humiliation."

Claire shook her head.

"Not theirs."

"Then whose?"

"Mine."

Rebecca waited.

Claire continued.

"They made me ashamed of being injured. Ashamed of needing help. Ashamed of protecting my own property. I want the moment they think they've reduced me to nothing."

"And then?"

Claire's eyes hardened.

"I want to stand without standing."

Rebecca almost smiled.

"Your father used to say things like that."

"I barely remember his voice."

"You sound like him anyway."

Claire looked down at her casts.

"Will the black envelope be there?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

"What's inside?"

"You'll know when I hand it to you."

"Still mysterious."

"Still necessary."

Claire sighed.

Rebecca added, "There's something else."

"What?"

"Vanessa's husband, Eric, has been moving money."

"From where?"

"Bennett accounts."

"How much?"

"Almost three million."

Claire stared.

"Does Vanessa know?"

"We think so."

"Does Margaret?"

"No."

Claire understood immediately.

"That's why Vanessa wants my trust too."

"Partly."

"She's not saving the family."

"No."

"She's saving herself."

Rebecca nodded.

"Which means if the party goes badly, Vanessa may turn on Margaret."

Claire looked toward the decorated living room.

Balloons.

Flowers.

Blue ribbons.

A beautiful stage.

"Good."

May you like

Rebecca raised an eyebrow.

Claire said quietly, "Let them finish destroying each other."
