Chapter 27 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT WINDOWS

The DNA report was simple.

Daniel Thomas Hale.

Biological mother: Eleanor Hale.

Biological father: Thomas Hale.

Probability greater than 99.99 percent.

Eleanor cried.

Daniel did too.

Not because blood made her more his mother.

The attic had already proven what family meant.

But one uncertainty ended.

The 02:17 amendment was exactly what Sarah said.

A research classification.

Not a baby exchange.

The larger DNA comparison revealed something else.

Rebecca and Sarah shared the same biological mother.

Helen Mercer.

Half sisters.

Not twins.

Elizabeth was Sarah's biological daughter.

Lucy was Elizabeth's.

Winnie was Rebecca's.

The two girls were connected through the Mercer family exactly as the master index suggested.

But not the way Haven had described.

The false twin story had hidden a twenty year experiment.

Helen Mercer had been monitored across two pregnancies separated by two decades.

Sarah was H18 because she was Helen's first surviving Haven child.

Rebecca was H17 because her case had been transferred between research teams and deliberately renumbered.

The labels had never represented birth order.

They represented ownership.

Dr. Shah hated the word.

So did Daniel.

Vale's criminal case expanded rapidly.

Data servers were seized in four states and three countries.

Companies that had purchased Haven material surrendered copies in exchange for reduced penalties.

Courts ordered the destruction of illegally retained biological samples where possible.

Victims were notified.

There were hundreds.

Some had never known they were adopted.

Some had never known fertility clinics shared their records.

Some discovered their children had been monitored since birth.

The damage could not be reversed.

But it could finally be named.

Three months later Adrian Vale stood before a federal judge.

Rebecca's recovered recording.

Traffic footage.

Northbridge video.

Thomas's confession.

Martin's testimony.

Rourke's messages.

Voss's records.

Together they formed what Daniel had wanted since the first night.

Proof.

Vale was charged with Rebecca's murder.

Conspiracy.

Extortion.

Illegal medical data trafficking.

Obstruction.

Fraud.

And crimes spanning decades.

He looked smaller in court.

Daniel had expected satisfaction.

Instead, he felt tired.

Outside, reporters surrounded him.

"Mr. Hale, do you believe justice has been served?"

Daniel looked toward Winnie.

Eleanor.

Elizabeth.

Lucy.

Sarah.

Justice was too large a word.

"Justice is not one arrest."

He walked away.

That evening, the Hale house felt strangely quiet.

Daniel entered the dining room.

The ceiling had been repaired again.

The hidden room beneath the floor was empty.

Federal investigators had removed everything.

He stood beside the table.

Winnie entered.

"Do you miss the files?"

"No."

"The secret room?"

"No."

"Sybil?"

Daniel looked at her.

That question was harder.

"Sometimes I miss who I thought she was."

Winnie considered it.

"Is that the same as missing her?"

"No."

"Okay."

She climbed onto a chair.

"Can I write to her?"

Daniel had known the question would come.

Sybil had lived in Winnie's home.

Helped raise her.

Loved her, in whatever damaged way she knew how.

Daniel could not erase that.

"Not yet."

Winnie frowned.

"When?"

"When you are older."

"How much older?"

"Old enough to understand that loving someone does not mean pretending they did not hurt people."

Winnie thought.

"Like Grandma and Grandpa Thomas?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Something like that."

She nodded.

Then knocked three times on the table.

Daniel froze.

Winnie smiled.

"I need dessert."

May you like

He laughed.

For the first time, three knocks did not mean danger.
