Chapter 20 - ARCHIVE SEVEN

Daniel looked at Sarah.

"You were with her that night."

Sarah did not deny it.

"Until forty minutes before the crash."

"Why did you never tell anyone?"

"Because I was still hiding."

"My wife died."

"I know."

"And you hid."

"Yes."

Daniel walked away before anger made him say something he could not take back.

Sarah did not follow.

Northbridge Women's Clinic sat behind a chain link fence at the edge of an industrial district.

The windows had been boarded.

The sign was gone.

But power still ran to the basement.

Brooks entered with the federal team.

Daniel remained outside until the building was cleared.

Then Brooks let him in.

The basement held servers.

Dozens of them.

Some had already been removed.

Others were running deletion programs.

Technicians disconnected them.

At the far end of the room, a steel door displayed a faded number.

Archive Seven.

Inside were paper files.

Older than the digital system.

Helen Mercer.

Sarah Mercer.

Rebecca Mercer.

Daniel Hale.

Elizabeth Ward.

Winnie Hale.

Lucy Ward.

Daniel opened Lucy's file.

A red stamp crossed the newest page.

PROFILE CONFIRMED.

Elizabeth sat down.

Sarah whispered, "No."

Daniel looked at the test results.

He did not understand them.

A federal medical consultant did.

Dr. Priya Shah read the page twice.

"This is not a supergene."

No one had suggested it was.

But the clarification mattered.

"This is a cluster of immune markers. Rare, but real."

"What does it do?" Daniel asked.

"Potentially reduces certain rejection responses in cell culture and transplant studies."

"Potentially?"

"The science here is decades of selective data and obsession. Some of their conclusions are probably exaggerated."

Elizabeth looked at Lucy.

"So she is not some miracle."

Dr. Shah's expression softened.

"She is a child."

That answer changed the room.

For decades, Project Haven had treated human beings as predictions.

Profiles.

Branches.

Candidates.

Dr. Shah placed the file down.

"Whatever scientific value exists here does not justify any of this."

They found Thomas Hale's original proposal.

The language was clinical.

Longitudinal family monitoring.

Immune inheritance.

Generational continuity.

Then later amendments appeared.

Private investors.

Exclusive licensing.

Embryonic tissue access.

Adoption partnerships.

The project had changed.

Or perhaps simply revealed what it had always been capable of becoming.

Brooks found a locked cabinet.

Winnie's brass key did not fit.

Daniel almost laughed at himself for trying.

A technician opened it.

Inside was a videotape.

Label:

NOVEMBER 4, 2019.

They played it.

Rebecca entered the basement.

Sarah followed.

Rebecca carried a small drive.

"I copied the index," Rebecca said on camera.

Sarah answered.

"Then leave."

"I need the outcome matrix."

"No."

"If I can prove what they wanted from Elizabeth's child, Vale cannot dismiss this as financial fraud."

Sarah grabbed her arm.

"Rebecca, he knows you are here."

Rebecca pulled away.

"My daughter is being watched too."

"Winnie is not the target."

"That does not make her safe."

The image flickered.

Then Rebecca said something that made Daniel stop breathing.

"Daniel deserves to know why I chose him."

Sarah looked at her.

"You love him."

"That is why he deserves to know."

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at the blank screen.

Brooks touched his shoulder.

"There may be more."

There was.

A second file.

Security footage from outside.

Rebecca drove away.

Eight minutes later, a black SUV followed.

Adrian Vale sat behind the wheel.

For the first time, Daniel saw direct evidence.

Not implication.

Not damaged audio.

Vale.

Following Rebecca.

Then a technician called from the server room.

"Detective."

Brooks walked over.

"What?"

"We recovered today's outgoing transfer."

"To where?"

The technician showed him.

A data package containing Lucy's confirmed profile had been uploaded six hours earlier.

Recipient unknown.

But attached to it was an appointment request.

ST. AGNES RESEARCH CENTER.

PATIENT: LUCY WARD.

PROCEDURE DATE: TOMORROW.

Elizabeth stared at the screen.

"I never made that appointment."

Sarah whispered.

"No."

May you like

Daniel looked at Brooks.

"Then someone expected her to be there."
