Chapter 24 - WHY REBECCA MARRIED HIM

Vale did not enter the foundation building himself.
Dr. Malcolm Voss did.
Federal agents arrested him with the portrait of Thomas Hale halfway off the wall.
The ledger remained behind it.
Untouched.
Voss refused to speak.
Until Brooks placed Rebecca's recovered video in front of him.
Then his confidence changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Vale will kill me."
Brooks answered.
"He already abandoned Rourke."
Voss looked at Daniel.
"Your father started all of this."
Daniel did not defend Thomas.
That surprised Voss.
"Yes."
"And Rebecca broke into private medical systems."
"Probably."
"Sarah stole records."
"Yes."
"Sybil kidnapped your mother."
"Yes."
Voss leaned back.
"You understand no one is innocent."
Daniel looked at him.
"Winnie is."
Voss said nothing.
"Lucy is."
Still nothing.
"Every child whose name you reduced to a code is."
Voss looked away.
Within two hours he asked for an attorney.
Then a deal.
He identified six surviving Haven investors.
Three hospital administrators.
Two data brokers.
And the company negotiating with Vale for the archive.
Brooks asked where Vale was.
Voss claimed not to know.
Daniel believed that part.
Vale trusted no one.
The consent ledger contained signatures dating back decades.
Thomas Hale's was among them.
So was Voss's.
Vale's appeared on hundreds of pages.
Martin's name appeared beside financial transfers.
The case no longer depended on a single witness.
It was becoming a structure.
A structure could be prosecuted.
A structure could also be dismantled.
Elizabeth sat with Sarah that evening.
For the first time, they spoke without shouting.
Sarah did not ask forgiveness.
She gave facts.
Names of foster parents.
Cities.
Birthdays she had watched from across streets.
School photographs she had secretly kept.
Elizabeth cried when Sarah produced a small envelope.
Inside was a picture of Elizabeth at age seven.
Another at ten.
Another at fourteen.
"You were there?"
"Far away."
"Why did you never come closer?"
"Because Vale was still searching."
Elizabeth held the photographs.
"Do you know what the worst part is?"
Sarah shook her head.
"I would have rather had a frightened mother than no mother."
Sarah cried.
"I know that now."
Lucy entered.
She placed a drawing between them.
Three women.
Sarah.
Elizabeth.
Lucy.
Sarah's shoulders shook.
Lucy pointed at the picture.
"You can be Grandma if Mom says yes."
Sarah looked at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth did not smile.
But she did not say no.
Across the house, Daniel reopened Rebecca's video.
One sentence stayed with him.
Do not protect the Hale name.
The following morning Daniel resigned as chairman of the Hale Foundation.
Then he called an emergency public meeting.
The foundation would suspend operations.
Open its archives.
Freeze grants.
Cooperate fully with investigators.
Any money connected to Project Haven would be placed into a restitution fund.
Eleanor supported him.
Martin, from custody, objected through his attorney.
Daniel almost enjoyed that.
Then Brooks called.
Sarah was gone.
Her room was empty.
Her phone sat on the bed.
On the pillow was a note.
Adrian contacted me.
He offered the last Haven archive in exchange for the one person he has wanted to silence since 1998.
Me.
Do not follow.
Elizabeth read it once.
Then tore it in half.
Daniel grabbed his coat.
Brooks stopped him.
"She said not to follow."
Daniel looked at him.
"When has anyone in this family ever listened to that sentence?"
For once, Winnie did not argue.
May you like
She handed him the brass key.
"Bring her home."
