Chapter 26 - THE PAGE THOMAS REMOVED

The missing page was not in the mausoleum.

It was inside the consent ledger.

Folded between two pages signed in 2019.

Thomas had written it shortly before his death.

Daniel read it at the dining table.

Rebecca came to see me today.

She believes Adrian is searching for Sarah's descendants.

She is correct.

I told her to stop.

She refused.

I contacted Adrian.

Daniel stopped.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

The next line hurt more.

I told him Rebecca had discovered the H18 line.

Daniel stood.

"No."

Sarah looked sick.

Thomas continued.

I believed Adrian would frighten her.

I believed he would protect the program long enough for me to dismantle it privately.

I was wrong.

By the time I understood what he intended, Rebecca was already on the road.

I tried to call her.

She did not answer.

I called Adrian.

He told me there are some truths a family survives only by burying them.

That night Rebecca Hale died.

Daniel lowered the page.

His father had not ordered Rebecca's murder.

But he had placed Vale behind her.

Another distinction that did not make him innocent.

Eleanor whispered.

"Thomas killed her."

Daniel shook his head slowly.

"Vale killed her."

He looked at the page.

"My father made it possible."

Both truths could exist.

Thomas's final paragraph explained why he never went to police.

Cowardice.

Shame.

Fear that Daniel would learn Rebecca had approached him because of Haven.

Fear that Eleanor would learn about Daniel's enrollment.

Fear the Hale name would collapse.

So Thomas protected the name.

Rebecca died.

Vale grew stronger.

Martin stole more.

Sybil became more desperate.

Secrets multiplied.

Daniel folded the page.

"No more."

He gave the original to Brooks.

Not a copy.

Not a redacted version.

The original.

Eleanor watched.

"That could destroy your father's reputation."

Daniel looked at her.

"Good."

Eleanor was surprised.

Then she nodded.

"Good."

Sarah returned to protective custody voluntarily.

This time Elizabeth met her at the door.

She did not hug her.

But she said:

"Do not disappear again."

Sarah promised.

Elizabeth held up a hand.

"No."

Sarah stopped.

"Do not promise."

Elizabeth's eyes filled.

"Just stay."

Sarah nodded.

"I will."

Sybil's attorneys arranged full cooperation.

She provided passwords.

Vale's old accounts.

Names of shell companies.

Locations where Rebecca had hidden copies.

She also pleaded guilty to imprisoning Eleanor.

Daniel attended the hearing.

Sybil looked at him once.

Then at Eleanor.

"I have no excuse."

Eleanor answered.

"I know."

It was not forgiveness.

It was cleaner than forgiveness.

Martin also pleaded guilty.

His testimony established the financial structure and confirmed he gave Vale Rebecca's route.

When prosecutors asked why, Martin cried.

Daniel felt nothing.

The most important call came two weeks later.

Brooks called Daniel at breakfast.

"Rebecca's case has been reclassified."

Daniel stopped.

Winnie looked up.

"As what?"

"Homicide."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Seven years.

For seven years, a line on a report had called Rebecca's death an accident.

Now the word was gone.

Winnie watched him.

"Is that good?"

Daniel struggled to answer.

"It is true."

Winnie nodded.

"Then it is good."

Brooks continued.

"There is one more thing."

Daniel almost laughed.

There was always one more thing.

"The DNA results came back."

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

The question he had tried not to ask returned.

Who had really left that hospital with him?

May you like

Brooks said:

"You should come to the station."
