Chapter 8 - The Jacket

On the morning of the wedding, Sophie refused to wear the denim jacket.

Evelyn found her standing beside the bed in the bridal suite, holding it at arm’s length.

“They know I always wear it,” Sophie said.

“Yes.”

“They will put the phone in the pocket.”

“Probably.”

“Then why do I have to wear it?”

Evelyn sat beside her.

“Because Damon replaced the jacket.”

Sophie examined the embroidered stars.

“It looks the same.”

“The pockets are different. One contains a tracking strip and a pressure sensor. We will know when someone touches it.”

“Will the camera see?”

“Every second.”

Sophie remained uncertain.

Evelyn took both of her hands.

“You do not have to do this. We can leave now. The company can survive without Hale Capital, even if we lose hotels.”

“What about Daddy’s evidence?”

“We will find another way.”

Sophie looked toward the ballroom doors.

“They hurt Daddy because he found the truth.”

“We do not know exactly what happened.”

“You think it.”

Evelyn could not lie.

“Yes.”

Sophie put on the jacket.

“Then I want them to make a mistake.”

The wedding began at sunset.

The luxury ballroom glowed beneath thousands of candles. Guests filled the rows facing an altar surrounded by white roses. A string quartet played while photographers moved quietly along the walls.

Preston waited in his black tuxedo.

He smiled when Evelyn entered.

For one dangerous moment, he looked like the man she had once believed he was.

Evelyn walked down the aisle with Sophie beside her.

Marianne sat in the front row wearing a silver gown. Preston’s mother, Lenora Hale, sat beside her. Both women watched Sophie more closely than the bride.

The ceremony proceeded without interruption.

Evelyn and Preston did not exchange legal vows. They had arranged a symbolic ceremony before signing the marriage license during the private reception.

Preston believed the license would be signed at nine thirty.

It would not.

During the first toast, a server deliberately spilled juice near Sophie’s chair.

Sophie jumped back.

Another woman rushed forward with napkins and guided her toward the gift table.

The woman was an assistant from Marianne’s foundation.

Damon spoke through the small receiver hidden in Evelyn’s earring.

“Pressure sensor activated.”

Evelyn did not turn.

Across the room, Preston removed something from his pocket.

Damon continued.

“Camera seven has him. Camera twelve has the jacket.”

Sophie returned to Evelyn’s side.

Three minutes later, the minister of commerce announced that his phone was missing.

Preston immediately looked toward Sophie.

Too quickly.

“There,” he said, pointing at her pocket.

A security guard approached, but Damon stepped in front of him.

“Do not search a child without her guardian.”

Preston reached into Sophie’s jacket himself.

He removed the silver phone.

Guests gasped.

Sophie clung to Evelyn.

“Mommy, I didn’t steal it.”

Preston raised the phone.

“It was in her pocket. She’s a thief.”

Evelyn looked toward the security camera.

“Then play the CCTV.”

Everything that followed unfolded exactly as they had feared.

Damon entered with the tablet.

The footage showed Preston planting the phone.

Then came the recorded call.

“It’s done.”

A woman answered.

“Do it after the toast. Evelyn must lose custody before the transfer becomes permanent.”

Preston turned toward the front row.

Marianne remained seated.

Lenora Hale rose slowly.

The ballroom doors locked.

Then every screen went black.

ARCHIVE DELETION IN PROGRESS appeared across Damon’s tablet.

Someone was accessing the system from outside.

But Damon did not panic.

He leaned close to Evelyn.

“They are deleting the false server.”

Evelyn understood.

The real footage was already stored in three independent locations.

Marianne did not know that.

May you like

For the first time, the woman who had controlled the Mercer family for fifteen years believed she still had the advantage.

Evelyn intended to let her believe it a little longer.
