Chapter 6 - The Custody Petition
By sunrise, Evelyn and Sophie were staying in a private suite at a Mercer Crown property registered under a subsidiary’s name.
Mara spent the morning copying every file from room 314.
Damon contacted two security officers he trusted and ordered them to preserve access logs from the abandoned hotel.
At eight seventeen, Evelyn received an electronic notice from family court.
An emergency petition had been filed regarding Sophie’s safety.
Preston was not the petitioner.
Marianne was.
The document accused Evelyn of removing Sophie from home after midnight, taking her to a dangerous construction site, exposing her to unknown men, and refusing to disclose her location.
Attached to the petition were photographs of Evelyn entering the abandoned hotel.
Someone had been watching before they arrived.
Marianne requested temporary suspension of Evelyn’s guardianship pending investigation.
The hearing was scheduled for the following morning.
Mara read the petition and shook her head.
“She prepared this before you found the key.”
“How?”
“She only needed an incident. Any incident.”
Evelyn read the final page.
If emergency removal were approved, Sophie would be placed with a court-authorized temporary guardian until a full hearing.
The named guardian was the Voss Child Protection Foundation.
Marianne’s foundation.
“It activates the contingency clause,” Evelyn said.
Mara nodded. “Marianne becomes successor trustee.”
“And she gains control of Sophie’s shares.”
“Immediately.”
Sophie stood near the window, pretending not to listen.
Evelyn closed the laptop.
“You are not going to that foundation.”
Sophie turned.
“Will the judge believe Preston?”
“The judge will see the truth.”
Evelyn wished she felt as certain as she sounded.
The hearing began at ten the next morning.
Marianne entered the courtroom with Preston beside her. Preston wore a dark suit and the expression of a worried fiancé.
He testified that Evelyn had become paranoid after discovering old family papers. He claimed she believed people were following her. He described the hotel trip as an emotional breakdown.
“She took a child into an unsafe building in the middle of the night,” he said. “I love Evelyn, but Sophie needs stability.”
Mara cross-examined him.
“How did you know which building they entered?”
Preston hesitated.
“Evelyn mentioned it before leaving.”
“Your previous statement says she left without speaking to you.”
“I assumed where she went.”
“Why?”
“Because she had been discussing the property.”
Mara held up a security log.
“Hale Capital accessed the building’s alarm system six minutes before Mrs. Mercer arrived. Was that also an assumption?”
Preston’s attorney objected.
The judge allowed the question.
Preston denied authorizing access.
Then Damon testified about the false fire alarm, the signal blocker, and the locked doors.
Finally, Mara submitted Adrian’s recording and the altered trust pages.
Marianne stood.
“The recording has not been authenticated. The documents may have been manipulated by Evelyn herself.”
The judge looked toward Evelyn.
Before Evelyn could speak, Sophie rose from the bench.
“I have something.”
Everyone turned.
Sophie opened her small backpack and removed the old hotel key card from room 314.
“I found this with Daddy’s note.”
The judge examined it.
On the back, Adrian had written a date and a case number.
Mara searched the number on her tablet.
Her expression changed.
“It refers to a sealed federal financial investigation.”
Marianne’s face went still.
The judge ordered the emergency petition denied until the evidence could be reviewed. Evelyn would retain custody, but she was instructed not to remove Sophie from the county.
Outside the courtroom, Preston approached Evelyn.
“This has gone too far.”
“You filed a petition to take my daughter.”
“I tried to prevent Marianne from doing it.”
“You stood beside her.”
“Because I thought I could control the damage.”
Evelyn looked at him with disgust.
“The wedding is canceled.”
Preston’s eyes hardened.
“You cannot cancel it.”
“Watch me.”
He leaned closer.
“If you cancel publicly, Mercer Crown’s lenders will panic. The board will blame Sophie. Your company will collapse before you discover what Adrian was protecting.”
Evelyn walked away.
That evening, the chairman of Mercer Crown called an emergency board meeting.
The company had received notice that three banks intended to suspend its credit facilities.
The reason was listed as instability in the Mercer guardianship trust.
