Chapter 4 - The Key Beneath the Dollhouse

Evelyn sat beside Sophie without reaching for the key.

“Where did you get that?”

Sophie looked toward the closed bedroom door.

“Daddy gave it to me.”

“The night before the accident?”

Sophie nodded.

“He told me not to show anyone unless someone tried to send me away.”

Evelyn’s chest tightened.

“Why did you not tell me?”

“Because nobody tried before.”

“Has Preston tried?”

Sophie swallowed.

“He said boarding school would make you happy.”

Evelyn closed her eyes for a moment.

“What else did he say?”

“He asked if Daddy left me a key. I told him no.”

“You did the right thing.”

Sophie’s voice became smaller.

“Did I lie?”

“You protected something your father asked you to protect.”

Evelyn studied the key. It was old, with a round brass head and the number 314 engraved near the teeth.

“Do you know what it opens?”

Sophie pointed toward the wooden dollhouse beside the window.

Adrian had built the dollhouse for Sophie’s fifth birthday. It was a detailed copy of the original Mercer Crown Hotel, the first property Evelyn’s grandfather had opened.

Sophie removed the red roof.

Inside the miniature lobby was a tiny red door.

Evelyn pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened beneath the dollhouse.

Inside lay a photograph, an old hotel key card, and a folded note in Adrian’s handwriting.

Evelyn opened the note.

Evie,

If you are reading this, I failed to protect Sophie myself.

Do not trust the estate file.

Do not trust the accident report.

Go to room 314 at the original Mercer Crown before anyone changes the locks.

Take Sophie.

Tell no one from the board.

Evelyn read the message twice.

The original Mercer Crown had closed three years earlier for renovation. The building remained company property, but Preston’s investment firm had recently offered to purchase it.

The hotel was also the place where Evelyn and Adrian had grown up while their father expanded the business.

“Did your father say what was in room 314?” Evelyn asked.

Sophie shook her head.

“Only that the truth had to sleep somewhere no one wanted to stay.”

The sentence sounded exactly like Adrian.

Evelyn photographed the note and sent it to Mara through an encrypted application.

Mara replied immediately.

Go tonight. Do not use your car.

An hour later, Evelyn and Sophie left through the service entrance wearing dark coats. Mara met them in an unmarked rental vehicle.

The original Mercer Crown stood near the abandoned railway district. Its stone exterior was covered in scaffolding. Most windows were dark.

Mara produced a temporary access order obtained through a preservation request.

“You filed this already?” Evelyn asked.

“I filed it the moment you told me someone altered the trust.”

The brass key opened a side entrance.

Inside, the hotel smelled of dust, old wood, and rainwater. Their footsteps echoed through the silent lobby.

Room 314 was on the third floor.

The key turned easily.

The room contained no furniture except a metal cabinet bolted to the floor.

Inside the cabinet were financial statements, photographs of private meetings, and a small digital recorder.

Evelyn pressed play.

Adrian’s voice filled the empty room.

“Marianne, Hale Capital cannot acquire Mercer Crown. Their money is connected to accounts we have been investigating.”

A second voice answered.

Preston’s father.

“You have a daughter, Adrian. Think carefully before you make yourself a problem.”

Sophie reached for Evelyn’s hand.

The recording continued.

Adrian spoke again.

“If anything happens to me, Evelyn gets the evidence.”

Then a third person entered the conversation.

A woman.

Her voice was calm and familiar.

“Evelyn will believe whatever I tell her. She always has.”

Evelyn stopped the recording.

Mara’s face had gone pale.

“You recognize her.”

Evelyn nodded.

It was Marianne Voss.

Before they could play the rest, headlights swept across the boarded windows below.

A vehicle stopped outside the hotel.

Then another.

Mara turned off the recorder.

“No one knew we were coming.”

From the hallway came the electronic click of the fire doors locking.

Someone had trapped them inside room 314.
