Chapter 13 - The Letter From Clara

The red envelope contained no money, no key, and no legal document.

It contained a birthday card.

The front showed a watercolor painting of a lighthouse surrounded by stars. Inside, Clara had written a message in blue ink.

For my Sophie,

When the north star reaches the lighthouse window, follow the light beneath the stairs.

Love always,

Mommy

The card was dated two days before the accident.

Sophie traced the painted lighthouse.

“Mommy made this.”

Evelyn recognized Clara’s style. The tiny stars had been painted with the same uneven points Clara used in Sophie’s bedtime books.

Mara placed the card beneath a document scanner.

“The ink and paper appear to be the correct age.”

“Why was it delivered now?” Damon asked.

“Because the fire destroyed room 314,” Evelyn said. “Someone wants us to go to Hawthorne Island.”

Ortiz agreed.

“Which means it could be another trap.”

Sophie looked at the card.

“Or Mommy wants us to find something.”

The Hawthorne house stood on a narrow island two hours from the city. Ferry service had ended years earlier, but Damon arranged a police boat.

They arrived before sunset.

The house appeared abandoned. Salt had damaged the white paint, and vines covered the porch. A stone lighthouse rose from the cliff behind it.

Inside, the furniture remained covered with sheets.

“This was not sold,” Evelyn said.

Mara checked the property database.

“It was transferred to a shell company controlled by the Voss Foundation.”

Someone had preserved the house exactly as Clara left it.

Sophie walked through the rooms with quiet recognition.

“I dreamed about this place.”

“You visited when you were little,” Evelyn told her.

“Mommy used to hide stars.”

Sophie led them to the lighthouse.

At the top, a circular window faced north. As the sun set, its final light crossed the room and struck a brass star set into the floor.

Beneath the stairs, Damon found a removable stone.

The compartment behind it contained a waterproof case.

Inside were passports, photographs, handwritten ledgers, and a video camera.

Sophie recognized the camera.

“Mommy used that at my birthday.”

Evelyn turned it on.

The final recording began in the Hawthorne house.

Clara sat at a wooden table. Adrian stood behind her.

Both looked exhausted.

Clara spoke first.

“If Evelyn is watching this, then Marianne has probably tried to control Sophie’s trust.”

Adrian placed a ledger on the table.

“Northstar is not an inheritance account. It is an evidence reserve.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

Clara continued.

“Years ago, money stolen from Mercer Crown, Hale Capital, and public charities was moved into one central network. We redirected part of it into a protected account so it could not disappear before investigators acted.”

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

“The beneficiary listed on Northstar is Sophie, but she does not own the money. Her name is the lock. Only she can authorize its release to the government when she is old enough.”

Mara exhaled slowly.

That explained Marianne’s obsession with guardianship.

As Sophie’s successor trustee, Marianne could have controlled the authorization.

The video continued.

Clara’s voice trembled.

“There is one more truth. The people behind Northstar discovered what we were doing. Someone inside the family helped them.”

A noise sounded outside the lighthouse.

Damon raised his hand.

The recording continued behind him.

Adrian said, “We believed it was Grant Bell. We were wrong.”

The lighthouse door opened below.

Footsteps began climbing the metal stairs.

Ortiz drew her weapon.

“Federal agent. Identify yourself.”

A man’s voice answered from the darkness.

“I came to stop you from playing the end of that recording.”

Sophie moved behind Evelyn.

The man stepped into the fading light.

He was wearing the bird-shaped ring.

May you like

But he was not Grant Bell.

He was Evelyn’s father, Richard Mercer.
