Chapter 7 - The Wedding That Had to Continue
The boardroom overlooked a city covered in rain.
Twelve directors sat around the table, arguing over numbers Evelyn had not seen before. Mercer Crown required a refinancing agreement within ten days. Without it, several hotels would default on renovation loans.
Hale Capital had offered emergency financing.
The offer depended on the wedding proceeding.
“This is financial coercion,” Evelyn said.
Board chairman Grant Bell avoided her eyes.
“It is a practical condition. Investors trust continuity.”
“They trust Preston’s money.”
“They trust the alliance.”
Evelyn placed Adrian’s files on the table.
“Hale Capital is connected to hidden accounts and illegal transfers.”
Grant did not open the folder.
“Those accusations are unverified.”
“Adrian died while investigating them.”
Several directors shifted uncomfortably.
Marianne attended by video call.
She wore a plain gray suit and spoke as if the custody hearing had never happened.
“Canceling the wedding now would create a public crisis. Proceed with the ceremony, secure the refinancing, and investigate privately afterward.”
Evelyn stared at her image.
“You tried to take Sophie.”
“I fulfilled my legal obligation after you entered an unsafe building with a child.”
“You activated the alarm.”
“You have no evidence of that.”
Not yet, Evelyn thought.
Mara had spent the day tracing the hotel access logs. The remote command came from an account registered to a maintenance contractor. That contractor had received payments from both Hale Capital and the Voss Foundation.
The connection was suspicious, but not enough for an arrest.
After the meeting, Evelyn found Sophie waiting in her office with Damon.
“Are we losing our house?” Sophie asked.
“No.”
“Are you still marrying him?”
Evelyn knelt in front of her.
“For a little while, we may need Preston to believe the wedding is continuing.”
Sophie understood immediately.
“It is a trap.”
“A careful one.”
“Will I have to stand near him?”
“Only where I can see you.”
Damon placed a tablet on the desk.
“The ballroom has ninety-two cameras. Preston requested that twelve be disabled for guest privacy.”
“Which twelve?”
Damon displayed the map.
Every camera overlooking the gift tables, family corridor, bridal suite, and front row had been marked for shutdown.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Can you make Preston believe they are disabled?”
“Yes.”
“Keep them recording.”
Damon nodded.
Mara joined them through a secure call.
“We need him to act. The financial records prove Hale Capital benefited, but they do not show Preston knew about Adrian’s death or the trust scheme.”
“What about Marianne?”
“She never signs anything directly. She uses assistants, foundations, and temporary accounts.”
Evelyn glanced at Sophie.
“Then the wedding becomes their final opportunity.”
Mara agreed.
“They believe custody must transfer before midnight on the wedding date. If the ceremony proceeds, they will need to create a public reason to remove Sophie quickly.”
“What kind of reason?”
“Something dramatic enough to make Evelyn appear irresponsible for defending her,” Damon said.
Sophie looked down at her denim jacket.
It was her favorite jacket, covered with small embroidered stars.
“They will blame me,” she said.
Evelyn’s stomach tightened.
“No one is using you as bait.”
“They already are.”
The child’s honesty silenced the adults.
Sophie touched the brass key hanging beneath her shirt.
“Daddy left the evidence for me because he knew grown-ups would not look at a child until they needed someone to blame.”
Evelyn hugged her.
“We will protect you.”
Sophie whispered against her shoulder.
“Then let them think I do not know.”
Over the next three weeks, the wedding preparations resumed.
Preston became affectionate again. Marianne withdrew the most aggressive parts of her court petition. The banks restored temporary credit. Newspapers published photographs of Evelyn and Preston smiling outside the cathedral.
Behind the public performance, Damon installed independent storage drives. Mara contacted a federal investigator named Lena Ortiz, whose name appeared in Adrian’s sealed case file.
Ortiz agreed to watch the wedding from inside the hotel.
Two days before the ceremony, Damon intercepted an unusual order.
Preston had requested one additional item for the gift table.
A new silver phone identical to the model used by the minister of commerce, one of the wedding’s most important guests.
Evelyn stared at the purchase record.
