Chapter 9 - Her Mother’s Secret Account

Evelyn called her mother seven times.

Margaret did not answer.

Daniel contacted local authorities in Charleston. Patrol officers reached Margaret’s house twenty minutes later.

The front door was unlocked.

The house was empty.

There were no signs of a struggle.

In the bedroom closet, officers found three passports under different names, stacks of foreign currency, and a photograph of Margaret standing beside Elias Shaw.

The picture had been taken only two years earlier.

Evelyn sat at the dining-room table while the officer described the discovery over the phone.

Her childhood was collapsing one object at a time.

Margaret had taught her to distrust debt, avoid public attention, and keep emergency cash hidden in three separate places.

Evelyn had believed those habits came from poverty.

Now she understood they came from training.

Daniel ended the call and sat beside her.

“We do not know why she stopped the freeze.”

“She signed the UNION agreement.”

“We do not know why.”

“She lied to me my entire life.”

“So did my parents.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Does that make it easier?”

“No.”

He took her hand.

“It means neither of us has to survive it alone.”

Sergeant Ortiz regained consciousness shortly before dawn.

She remembered Gloria shouting from the attic stairs. Then one of the military police officers struck Ortiz from behind.

The same officer released Marcus.

They forced Gloria downstairs and escaped through the servants’ tunnel.

The officers who had betrayed them were not military police at all.

Their records had been inserted into the base system three months earlier.

Meridian’s identity network had reached the military.

Daniel’s return home had not surprised Owen.

It had been allowed.

Marcus had arranged Daniel’s emergency leave after locating the stolen transfer.

But Owen had intercepted the request and approved it through a compromised command office.

Every step had been anticipated.

Except Evelyn freezing the accounts.

At sunrise, a secure call arrived on the vault terminal.

Margaret Shaw appeared on the screen.

She was seated inside a moving car.

Evelyn stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

“Where are you?”

“Safe for the moment.”

“You overrode the freeze.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because account forty-seven contains a dead-man protocol.”

Daniel moved into view.

“What happens if it is frozen?”

“Locations, names, and classified operations are released publicly. Some deserve exposure. Others would place deployed units and intelligence sources at immediate risk.”

“Owen told us people would die,” Evelyn said.

“For once, Owen told the truth.”

“Is he controlling you?”

“No.”

“Then help us.”

Margaret looked exhausted.

“I have been helping you since before you met Daniel.”

“You signed an agreement arranging our lives.”

“I signed to keep Elias from replacing you.”

“Replacing me?”

“UNION did not require you specifically. It required one descendant from each bloodline. Elias identified six possible Shaw descendants and four Whitakers.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“What happened to the others?”

Margaret looked away.

“Some were paid to disappear. Some refused.”

“And some died,” Evelyn said.

“Yes.”

Evelyn pressed her hands against the table.

“Who is Elias Shaw?”

“My father.”

“Is he alive?”

Margaret did not respond.

“Mom.”

“He was alive when I saw him two years ago.”

“Does he control Meridian?”

“He created its deepest system, but he lost control decades ago. Now different factions are fighting over what remains.”

“Which faction are you with?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with pain.

“Yours.”

The car jolted.

She looked over her shoulder.

“I cannot stay connected.”

“Where are Daniel’s parents?”

“Lydia is inside the Whitaker estate.”

Daniel stared at her.

“We searched the house.”

“You searched the rooms.”

The call began breaking apart.

Margaret spoke quickly.

“Find the original nursery. Do not let Gloria enter first. And when Lydia asks about the red envelope, lie.”

The screen went black.

Daniel pulled up the original mansion plans.

The second-floor nursery had been removed during a renovation after his mother’s supposed death.

It had once stood behind the library chimney.

They opened the wall at eight fifteen in the morning.

Inside was a narrow bedroom untouched for decades.

A child’s wooden horse stood near the window.

Faded stars covered the ceiling.

A woman sat in a chair beside the bed.

She wore the gray coat from the security footage.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

The woman looked up.

Her eyes were the same as his.

“Daniel.”

He could not move.

She stood slowly, leaning on a cane.

“My son.”

Daniel took one step forward.

Lydia Kessler raised a small pistol.

“Before you come closer,” she said, “tell me what Evelyn did with the control code.”
