Chapter 13 - Owen’s Daughter

Evelyn read the DNA result until the numbers blurred.
Owen Kessler was listed as her biological father.
Lydia sat down as if her strength had left her.
“My brother.”
Arthur looked at Marcus.
“Verify it.”
Marcus examined the file structure.
“It carries a hospital certification and archived laboratory record.”
“Those can be forged,” Daniel said.
“So can childhoods,” Gloria replied.
Evelyn turned toward Lydia.
“Did my mother know Owen?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Margaret worked for Elias. Owen wanted access to her father’s account system.”
“Were they together?”
Lydia hesitated.
“That depends on what Owen told Margaret.”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“Answer me.”
“Owen approached her under another name. He claimed to be helping Arthur destroy Meridian.”
The fictional identity Thomas Reed suddenly made sense.
“Did he call himself Thomas?”
“I do not know.”
Evelyn looked at the active legal office using Thomas Reed’s identity.
Gabriel controlled the identity.
Owen might have used it.
Or the DNA report could be another layer of manipulation.
Daniel moved closer but did not touch her.
“Nothing changes between us until we verify it independently.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“If Owen is my father, then the vault recognized me as a Kessler descendant.”
“And me as a Whitaker.”
“The agreement described Elias’s bloodline.”
“An agreement written by people who lied for a living.”
Arthur took the laptop.
“If Owen is her father, he cannot directly access the vault because Elias excluded the founding generation. Only descendants born after the UNION protocol was created could activate it.”
Marcus nodded.
“That would explain why Owen needed Evelyn.”
“And why Elias watched her,” Lydia said. “She was the bridge between the Kessler network and the Shaw accounts.”
Gloria stared at Evelyn.
“Owen was never threatening Daniel to obtain the estate. He was forcing us to bring you to the vault.”
Evelyn remembered every step.
Gloria’s threat.
Marcus’s missing money.
Daniel’s return.
The photographed hostages.
The red envelope.
Someone had guided all of them toward the same door.
A notification appeared on the laptop.
Owen had released another file publicly.
It showed footage from inside the vault.
Evelyn could be seen entering the code and freezing the accounts.
The video excluded Owen’s threats and the hostage feed.
To the public, Evelyn appeared to be operating Meridian.
Sergeant Ortiz entered.
“Federal agents are at the gate. They have warrants for Evelyn, Marcus, and Arthur.”
Daniel read the warrant.
It was signed less than an hour earlier.
“They moved quickly.”
“Because someone prepared the charges months ago,” Marcus said.
Arthur looked toward the rear windows.
“There is a service road through the north forest.”
Ortiz shook her head.
“Running makes the evidence stronger.”
“Staying places Evelyn in a federal facility where Meridian has identities.”
Daniel looked at Ortiz.
“Can we trust the agents?”
“I can verify the team leader.”
“Do it.”
While Ortiz contacted her command, Evelyn opened her mother’s journal.
She searched the spine and found a narrow ridge.
The missing page had not been torn out.
It had been folded into the binding.
She removed it carefully.
The handwriting was Margaret’s.
Arthur believes the child may be his. Owen believes the same. Elias believes she belongs to our bloodline. I will allow all three men to remain uncertain. Certainty would make Evelyn useful. Uncertainty may keep her alive.
Below it, Margaret had written:
Only Gabriel knows the father’s true identity.
Evelyn showed the page to Daniel.
“The DNA report is part of the game.”
“Then we find Gabriel.”
Arthur opened the airfield photographs.
The supposed Gabriel prisoner at Fort Belden had undergone facial reconstruction to resemble Arthur.
But Lydia had identified the older man on the phone as Gabriel.
If Gabriel controlled identities, he could appear as anyone.
Marcus enlarged the image of the man standing with Owen at Fort Belden.
His back faced the camera, but one hand was visible.
He wore a black signet ring.
Gloria stared at it.
“I have seen that ring.”
“Where?” Daniel asked.
“Tonight.”
She pointed toward Sergeant Ortiz’s body-camera recording from the foyer.
One of the false military police officers stood behind Daniel when the mansion doors opened.
His face was visible.
Young.
Clean-shaven.
Forgettable.
On his right hand was the same black ring.
Ortiz returned.
“The federal team leader is legitimate, but two agents on the arrest team were added this morning.”
“Meridian replacements,” Daniel said.
The doorbell echoed through the mansion.
Federal agents were demanding entry.
Evelyn looked at the footage of the false officer.
“Gabriel was here from the beginning.”
Marcus checked the estate’s departure logs.
The false officer’s vehicle had left with Gloria and Marcus.
But only three people appeared inside when the vehicle passed the rear camera.
Gloria.
Marcus.
The second false officer.
Gabriel had remained behind.
Daniel raised his weapon.
“Search the house.”
The office lights flickered.
Every computer screen changed to a live image of the mansion library.
Margaret Shaw sat alone beside the fireplace.
She had entered the house without triggering a single alarm.
She looked directly into the hidden camera.
“Evelyn,” she said, “do not let the federal agents arrest Owen’s daughter.”
Evelyn entered the library.
“Am I Owen’s daughter?”
Margaret looked toward someone standing outside the camera’s view.
“No.”
“Then whose daughter am I?”
A man stepped beside her.
He wore the uniform of a military police officer and the black signet ring.
May you like
Gabriel Kessler smiled.
“Mine.”
