THE VOICE IN THE DARK / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Price of Control

Daniel took the paper from Evelyn and read it again.

The meaning did not change.

The vault had recognized both bloodlines, but its fortune would transfer permanently to Evelyn only if Daniel died.

Owen wanted the account network.

He also wanted Daniel removed.

“You expected us to turn against each other,” Evelyn said.

Owen’s voice came through the screen.

“I expected history to repeat itself.”

Arthur shifted in his chair.

Lydia’s eyes moved toward the floor.

Margaret remained unusually still.

Daniel noticed.

The three taps, two taps, three taps from the earlier phone call returned to his mind.

A military challenge code.

Not a request for rescue.

A warning about surveillance.

Daniel moved closer to the camera.

“Which hostage are you offering?”

Owen smiled again. “Choose.”

“My father.”

Evelyn looked at him, startled.

Owen appeared pleased.

“A practical decision.”

“No,” Daniel replied. “A test.”

He turned toward Evelyn.

“My father is tapping with his right foot. Three, two, three. That code means false identity.”

Evelyn looked at the screen.

Arthur’s boots were visible.

His right foot moved faintly.

Three taps.

Two.

Three.

Daniel pointed toward Lydia.

“My mother injured her left leg. The woman in that chair is resting her weight on it.”

Evelyn studied Margaret.

Her mother had a small habit when frightened. She rubbed her thumb against the side of her index finger.

The woman in the chair was not doing it.

“Those are not our parents.”

Owen’s expression hardened.

Daniel continued.

“The room is staged.”

The screen flickered.

Marcus shouted through the intercom. “The signal is moving.”

Ortiz’s voice followed.

“It is being rerouted through multiple locations.”

Evelyn looked at the document in her hand.

“Owen needed us to open the vault. The hostages were leverage.”

“He still needs the control code,” Daniel said.

The handwritten code from the envelope contained sixteen digits.

Owen could not see it clearly through the camera.

Evelyn held the paper closer to the glass but covered the final four digits with her thumb.

“Release our parents.”

Owen leaned toward the camera.

“You have misunderstood your position.”

“No. You have.”

Evelyn entered the first twelve digits into the terminal beside the glass case.

A list of Meridian accounts appeared.

Daniel’s stolen three hundred thousand dollars was among them.

So were hundreds of millions hidden through charities, defense contractors, insurance companies, and property trusts.

A command option appeared.

FREEZE NETWORK.

Evelyn selected it.

The system requested the final four digits.

Owen’s calm vanished.

“Do not do that.”

“Give me a location.”

“If you freeze those accounts, people will die.”

“People have already died.”

“You think Meridian belongs to me? It belongs to governments, generals, banks, and men whose names you will never hear. They will not allow you to shut it down.”

Evelyn’s thumb remained over the code.

“Then they should have chosen a better guardian.”

A sudden crash sounded beyond the sealed vault door.

Gunfire did not follow, but Evelyn heard officers shouting.

Daniel moved in front of her.

“Ortiz?”

The intercom went silent.

On the live feed, Owen stepped away from the fake hostages.

The camera angle widened.

The concrete room was a film set.

The prisoners were actors wearing masks.

Owen walked toward a steel door.

Before leaving, he looked back.

“Your real parents are closer than you think.”

The feed ended.

The vault door unlocked.

Daniel opened it.

The attic outside was empty.

Gloria, Marcus, Sergeant Ortiz, and the officers were gone.

A trail of blood led toward the stairs.

Evelyn followed it to the landing.

Ortiz lay unconscious against the wall, alive but injured. Two officers were missing.

Gloria’s shoes had been left near the attic entrance.

Marcus’s broken handcuffs lay beside them.

Daniel checked the mansion’s security display on his phone.

A vehicle had exited through the rear gate.

Evelyn entered the final four digits.

The Meridian accounts began freezing one by one.

Across the screen, balances turned red.

Owen’s network was losing access to billions.

Then the process stopped at sixty-one percent.

A warning appeared.

SECONDARY CONTROLLER HAS OVERRIDDEN COMMAND.

A name materialized beneath it.

MARGARET SHAW.
