THE VOICE IN THE DARK / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Betrayal Broadcast

By morning, news vehicles surrounded the Whitaker estate.

The gates remained locked, but camera crews lined the road. Reporters shouted questions toward every vehicle that moved behind the trees.

Evelyn watched from Daniel’s office.

Her photograph appeared on every screen.

Some reports called her an heiress.

Others called her a criminal financier.

One claimed she had used Daniel’s deployment to steal military funds.

The three hundred thousand dollars taken from Daniel’s account had been reframed as evidence against her.

Owen had built the story before the crime.

Marcus entered with Arthur.

Daniel stood immediately.

“Why is he not restrained?”

“Because we need him,” Arthur replied.

“We needed him before he opened the gate for you.”

Marcus placed a flash drive on the desk.

“I opened the gate because Arthur had Gloria.”

Gloria, standing near the window, turned sharply.

“You did not know that.”

“I saw her in the second vehicle.”

Gloria looked at Arthur.

“You told him I was a hostage?”

“You were being followed by Owen’s men,” Arthur said. “Removing you was the safest option.”

“You dragged me into a van.”

“You would not have come willingly.”

“Correct.”

Evelyn ignored them.

“What is on the drive?”

Marcus connected it to an isolated laptop.

“A copy of Owen’s public evidence package. The files are convincing because most are genuine.”

“Can we prove they were manipulated?”

“Some. Not all.”

Daniel read the supposed statement from Margaret.

“Did her voice confirm it?”

“No. It was submitted through an attorney.”

“Which attorney?”

Marcus opened the registration record.

The legal office belonged to a firm in New York.

Its senior partner was Thomas Reed.

Evelyn’s fictional father.

“The identity is active,” Marcus said. “Someone has used it for more than twenty years.”

“Gabriel,” Lydia said from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

She carried a small metal box from the nursery.

“Gabriel created Thomas Reed when Evelyn was born. He used the identity to protect her legal inheritance without exposing Elias.”

“Then Gabriel is my legal father?”

“On paper.”

“What is inside the box?”

Lydia set it on the desk.

“Proof that Margaret did not make that statement.”

The box contained old cassette tapes, letters, photographs, and a handwritten journal.

One tape was dated the year Evelyn was born.

They played it.

Margaret’s younger voice filled the room.

“If anything happens to me, Thomas Reed is not a person. The identity belongs to Gabriel Kessler. He promised Elias that he would protect Evelyn, but Gabriel’s promises always contain a second purpose.”

The recording described Margaret’s plan to separate Evelyn from the Meridian bloodlines.

She had refused to reveal the child’s father.

Elias believed Evelyn was his granddaughter.

But Margaret had never confirmed it.

Evelyn paused the tape.

“What does that mean?”

Lydia looked at Arthur.

He understood first.

“If Elias is not her grandfather, the biometric lock should not have recognized her.”

“Unless the system was altered,” Marcus said.

“Or Elias is not the Shaw ancestor connected to her,” Gloria added.

Evelyn looked at her mother’s journal.

A page had been removed near the date of her birth.

The next page contained only one sentence.

ARTHUR MUST NEVER KNOW.

Daniel looked toward his father.

Arthur’s face had gone pale.

“No.”

Lydia stepped back from him.

Gloria’s expression changed from confusion to horror.

Evelyn felt her pulse in her throat.

Arthur moved toward the desk.

“What year was Evelyn born?”

She told him.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Lydia struck him across the face.

The room fell silent.

“You told me the operation in Charleston was financial,” she said.

Arthur did not defend himself.

Daniel stared at his father.

“What happened?”

Arthur looked at Evelyn.

“Your mother and I were hiding from Owen. We believed Lydia had been captured. Margaret helped me move through the coastal accounts.”

Evelyn’s stomach tightened.

“How long were you together?”

“Three months.”

Daniel understood before Evelyn did.

He stepped between her and Arthur.

“No.”

Arthur’s voice broke.

“I never knew Margaret had a child.”

Evelyn stared at him.

The biometric vault required a Whitaker descendant and a Shaw descendant.

But perhaps Elias had never designed it that way.

Perhaps it required two descendants of Meridian’s founders.

And perhaps Evelyn had been recognized because Arthur Whitaker was her father.

Daniel was not only her husband.

He might be her half brother.

Lydia looked at the journal.

“Margaret removed the page because it contains the truth.”

Evelyn could barely breathe.

Daniel reached for her, then stopped himself.

The laptop chimed.

A new message had arrived from Margaret.

DO NOT BELIEVE ARTHUR.

Attached was a DNA report.

It showed no biological relationship between Evelyn and Arthur Whitaker.

Below it was a second result.
