Chapter 14 - The Man With a Thousand Names

Daniel entered the library behind Evelyn.

His weapon was raised.

Gabriel showed no fear.

Without the cap and uniform jacket, he appeared older than he had in the foyer. Fine lines framed his eyes. His face had been constructed to disappear from memory.

Margaret remained seated.

She looked unharmed.

“Move away from her,” Daniel ordered.

Gabriel glanced at Margaret.

“She came willingly.”

Evelyn looked at her mother.

“Is he my father?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.”

The word landed quietly.

After the lies, threats, and manufactured evidence, the truth sounded almost ordinary.

Evelyn turned toward Gabriel.

“You created Thomas Reed.”

“To give you a father who could sign forms without being found.”

“You watched me grow up.”

“Yes.”

“You allowed me to believe I had been abandoned.”

“I believed distance was protection.”

Daniel gave a cold laugh.

“Everyone in this family uses the same excuse.”

Gabriel accepted the criticism.

Federal agents continued demanding entry at the front gate. Ortiz and the legitimate officers were verifying identities one by one.

Time was shrinking.

Gabriel removed the black signet ring and placed it on the table.

“This contains the identity archive. Names, biometrics, access records, and the replacement network Owen inserted into governments and financial institutions.”

“Why bring it here?” Evelyn asked.

“Because the archive can be opened only by the active Meridian controller.”

“You want my code.”

“I want you to destroy the identities before Owen activates them.”

Margaret stood.

“Do not trust him.”

Gabriel looked at her. “You asked me to come.”

“I asked you to help Evelyn. Not transfer your war to her.”

“It became her war when Owen published the vault footage.”

Daniel positioned himself near the side door.

“Where is Owen?”

“Fort Belden.”

“And Arthur’s duplicate?”

“Also there.”

“Is the real Arthur here?”

Gabriel’s gaze moved toward the hallway.

Arthur entered the library.

“Yes.”

The two men looked at each other across the room.

Former partners.

Former friends.

Perhaps former enemies.

Arthur’s hand remained near his weapon.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

Gabriel smiled.

“So should you.”

Evelyn stepped between their lines of sight.

“No more secrets. Who controls the remaining thirty-nine percent of the accounts?”

Gabriel answered.

“Elias.”

“My grandfather?”

“Your maternal grandfather, yes.”

“Is he alive?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Gabriel continued.

“He has been inside Fort Belden for nine years.”

“As Owen’s prisoner?”

“No. As its commander.”

The room became silent.

Margaret turned on Gabriel.

“You promised you would not tell her until Owen was contained.”

“Owen is not the greatest danger anymore.”

Arthur looked toward the windows.

“What has Elias done?”

“Transferred account forty-seven into a sovereign holding structure. In less than six hours, Meridian’s liabilities will legally attach to Evelyn.”

“Why her?” Daniel asked.

“Because Elias believes she can survive the exposure. He designed her public identity to appear innocent, competent, and unconnected.”

Evelyn stared at Gabriel.

“My life was a legal defense strategy.”

Gabriel did not deny it.

Margaret stepped toward her daughter.

“I tried to take you away.”

“But you stayed connected to them.”

“To know when they were coming.”

“You signed the UNION agreement.”

“To replace the original subject.”

“Who was the original subject?”

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“His younger sister.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I never had a sister.”

“Yes,” Lydia said from the doorway.

She had entered without anyone noticing.

“You did.”

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“What was her name?”

“Rebecca.”

“What happened to her?”

Lydia looked at Arthur.

He lowered his gaze.

Owen had taken Rebecca when she was an infant. Arthur and Lydia were told she died during an attempted rescue.

Margaret had later altered the UNION agreement, replacing Rebecca with Evelyn.

“That is why Elias watched you,” Margaret told Evelyn. “He believed you were the safer subject.”

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“You let me believe I was an only child.”

“I believed she was dead.”

Gabriel picked up the ring.

“She is not.”

Arthur crossed the room.

“Where?”

Gabriel activated the ring against the laptop.

A security feed appeared from Fort Belden.

Owen stood inside the concrete facility.

Beside him was a woman in her early thirties wearing a black suit.

She had Daniel’s eyes.

Rebecca Whitaker.

Owen addressed the camera.

“Bring Evelyn and the code. Bring Daniel if he insists.”

Rebecca looked directly into the lens.

Her expression contained no recognition.

Owen placed a hand on her shoulder.

“My daughter has waited a long time to meet her family.”

Lydia whispered, “She is not your daughter.”

Owen smiled as if he could hear her.

“No,” he said. “But after thirty years, identity becomes stronger than blood.”

The feed changed.

A countdown appeared.

Five hours, fifty-nine minutes.

At zero, account forty-seven would become permanent.

Gabriel looked at Evelyn.

“We can stop the transfer from Fort Belden.”

Daniel checked his weapon.

“Then we go together.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Owen expects that.”

Evelyn took the black ring from Gabriel.

“He has expected everything because all of you keep following the same rules.”

She looked at Margaret.

“Can the public evidence package be reversed?”

“Only with the original operation records.”

“Inside Fort Belden?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn faced the others.

“Then we are not going there to trade a code.”

“What are we going there to do?” Daniel asked.

“To make Meridian testify against itself.”

Outside, the mansion gates opened.

The verified federal team entered.

Evelyn raised her hands before they reached the library.

“I will cooperate,” she told the lead agent. “But only if the arrest is broadcast.”

The agent stared at her.

“Broadcast?”

“To every reporter outside.”

Daniel understood first.

Owen had built a public story in which Evelyn was Meridian’s secret controller.

She would use that story to enter Fort Belden as the one person Owen could not afford to silence before obtaining the code.

Evelyn looked at the cameras beyond the windows.

“Let him believe he has already won.”
