Chapter 9 - sunday night was already packed)

Emily returned to the house Saturday afternoon alone.

Ruth was gardening in the backyard.

Tyler was gone.

Emily went directly to Ruth's closet.

Behind a row of coats sat Khloe's small blue suitcase.

Inside were pajamas.

Three outfits.

Toothbrush.

School uniform.

Purple stuffed rabbit.

Khloe's birth certificate.

Social Security card.

Passport.

Emily's heart began pounding.

This was not a sleepover bag.

It was relocation.

She photographed everything.

Then she found an envelope beneath the clothes.

Inside was a printed airline itinerary.

Monday.

Richmond to Tampa.

Passenger.

Ruth Walker.

Khloe Walker.

Emily stared.

A one way flight.

No return.

She felt rage so intense that the room seemed to narrow.

Ruth planned to sign guardianship papers Sunday.

Appear before relatives as Khloe's new legal guardian.

Transfer the house.

Then take Khloe out of state before Emily could challenge any of it Monday.

Emily heard the back door.

She replaced everything.

Ruth entered the house.

Emily barely reached the hallway before Ruth appeared.

"You're home."

"Needed clothes."

"For what?"

"Khloe's staying with Sarah again."

Ruth smiled thinly.

"She's been spending a lot of time there."

"She loves her aunt."

"Children shouldn't be passed around."

Emily nearly laughed.

Ruth continued.

"She needs stability."

"So do I."

"Exactly."

They stared at each other.

The house felt like a stage.

Each knew the other was acting.

Neither knew exactly how much the other knew.

Ruth walked toward her room.

Emily said, "I was thinking about Sunday."

Ruth stopped.

"What about it?"

"Maybe you're right."

Ruth turned slowly.

"About?"

"I haven't been doing well."

Ruth's eyes sharpened.

Emily hated every word she was about to say.

But she needed Ruth confident.

"I barely sleep. Work is a mess. Khloe's having nightmares."

Ruth softened her voice.

"We can help."

Emily looked down.

"I'm scared I'm failing her."

Ruth approached.

For one terrible second, she looked almost maternal.

She placed a hand on Emily's shoulder.

"Admitting that is the first step."

Emily forced herself not to pull away.

"What did you want me to sign Sunday?"

Ruth's hand tightened slightly.

"Nothing you need to worry about."

"Tyler said something."

Ruth sighed.

"Tyler talks too much."

"What papers?"

"A temporary arrangement."

"For Khloe?"

"For both of you."

Emily looked frightened.

She did not have to fake much.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you rest."

"Where?"

"There are treatment programs."

Emily stared.

"You want me hospitalized?"

"Not hospitalized."

"Then what?"

"A grief retreat. Residential support. A few weeks."

Emily almost admired the phrasing.

No mention that Ruth planned to take Khloe to Florida.

No mention of trustee resignation.

No mention of the deed.

"And Khloe?"

"With me."

Emily swallowed.

"For how long?"

"Until you're better."

"What if I don't get better?"

Ruth stroked her arm.

"Then we make decisions."

There it was again.

We.

Emily stepped away.

"I need to think."

"Of course."

Ruth smiled.

"But Sunday would be a good time."

"Why Sunday?"

"Family will be here."

"So?"

"Witnesses."

Ruth realized the word too late.

Emily looked up.

"Witnesses?"

"People who love you."

"To watch me sign?"

"To support you."

Emily pretended to consider it.

"Can I see the papers first?"

Ruth's smile disappeared.

"Denise is bringing them."

"Why Denise?"

"She's a notary."

Emily let silence hang.

Ruth studied her.

"Is there a problem?"

"No."

Emily forced a tired smile.

"I just don't want surprises."

Ruth's response was almost tender.

"There won't be."

Emily walked upstairs.

Inside her bedroom she locked the door and texted her attorney, Mark Ellison.

Need emergency meeting.

Mark had been recommended by Robert Kessler.

He specialized in estate and family litigation.

They met two hours later at his office.

Emily showed him everything.

The signature practice.

Morrow package.

Denise's statement.

Daniel's USB.

The trust.

The airline itinerary.

Mark stopped her several times to ask questions.

Finally he leaned back.

"This is extensive."

"Can we stop Sunday?"

"Immediately."

"How?"

"We can seek emergency protective orders. We can notify police. We can remove Ruth and Tyler from the home."

"I want them out."

"We can start that."

"But I also need to know what Daniel's letter says."

Mark nodded.

"Commonwealth?"

"Yes."

"If Ruth presents forged documents claiming you've resigned, that should trigger release."

"Should I let her?"

Mark studied her.

"Normally I'd tell you not to play games with fraud."

"I'm not asking to let her file anything."

"What are you asking?"

"Let her present it."

"In your house?"

"In front of witnesses."

Mark considered.

"You want her to explain the scheme."

"Yes."

"She might not."

"She will."

"Why?"

"Because Ruth doesn't think she commits crimes."

Mark frowned.

Emily explained.

"She thinks she fixes mistakes. Protects family. Corrects people. If she believes I am surrendering, she'll explain it as something noble."

Mark nodded slowly.

"People who rationalize wrongdoing sometimes document it better than people who know they're criminals."

"Exactly."

"We do not allow her to take Khloe anywhere."

"No."

"We cancel the flight."

"I already called the airline and flagged Khloe's reservation."

"We notify school."

"Done."

"We secure the house."

"Sarah has Khloe."

"Good."

Mark looked at the itinerary.

"Tyler worries me."

"He worries everyone."

"Do you know if there are weapons in the house?"

"Daniel had an old hunting rifle locked in a safe."

"Does Tyler know the code?"

"I don't think so."

"Change it."

"I will."

"Better, remove it."

Emily nodded.

Mark tapped the papers.

"I can ask officers to be nearby Sunday, but unless there is an immediate threat, they may not stand in your living room."

"What about attempted fraud?"

"Once Ruth presents forged documents and Denise confirms the plan, we'll have more."

"Denise is willing."

"Is she reliable?"

"No."

Mark almost smiled.

"At least you're realistic."

Emily looked at Daniel's USB.

"What about the missing rent?"

"That becomes separate evidence."

"And Tyler's debts?"

"Potential motive."

Mark folded his hands.

"Emily, there is something you need to understand."

"What?"

"If this works, Ruth may be arrested."

"I know."

"Tyler may too."

"I know."

"Khloe may lose most of her relationship with that side of the family."

Emily stared.

"They made a seven year old forge her mother's name so they could take her away."

Mark nodded.

"I am not telling you to protect them. I'm telling you that the consequences will be real."

Emily looked down.

"For months I thought keeping family together was protecting Khloe."

"And now?"

Emily thought of crackers under Ruth's shoe.

The suitcase.

The one way ticket.

"Now I think protecting her means choosing who doesn't get access to her."

Mark nodded.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

You found the suitcase.

Emily stood abruptly.

Mark looked up.

"What?"

She showed him.

Another message arrived.

Ruth has a camera in Daniel's office.

Emily's skin crawled.

That explained how the sender knew she had searched.

But it also meant Ruth had watched her.

Emily typed.

Where?

The answer.

Smoke detector.

Emily thought of the office ceiling.

A new detector Ruth had installed two months earlier.

May you like

She looked at Mark.

"She's been watching me."
