Chapter 11 - what ruth said to daniel)

Evan met Emily at seven Sunday morning in a twenty four hour diner.
He looked older than forty.
Tired eyes.
Gray hoodie.
Hands that would not stop moving.
He placed an envelope on the table.
"Everything I kept."
Emily did not touch it.
"Why now?"
"Because Daniel was my friend before Tyler was my client."
"That didn't stop you stealing from him."
"No."
Evan accepted the accusation.
"I told myself Tyler would repay it."
"Did he?"
"No."
"Did Ruth?"
"No."
Emily opened the envelope.
Bank records.
Emails.
Photographs.
A copy of Daniel's spreadsheet.
Then a handwritten statement from Evan.
"What happened that night?"
Evan looked at his coffee.
"Daniel came to the garage around nine."
"Tyler said his apartment."
"He went there after."
"So Tyler lied."
"Yes."
"What happened at the garage?"
"Daniel showed me the rent records. I admitted everything."
"Ruth?"
"Not there yet."
"Tyler?"
"Yes."
"Did Daniel threaten police?"
"Yes."
"What did Tyler do?"
"Yelled."
"Threatened him?"
"Yes."
"Anything physical?"
"No."
Emily exhaled.
"What happened next?"
"Daniel left for Tyler's apartment because Tyler claimed records were there."
"Then Ruth came."
"She was already waiting."
Emily felt sick.
"Why?"
"Tyler called her."
"Did she know Daniel discovered the theft?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
Evan stared at the table.
"At first she cried."
Of course.
"Then?"
"She told Daniel that reporting Tyler would kill the family."
"And Daniel?"
"He said Tyler had killed the family by stealing."
Emily could hear his voice.
"What about her?"
"Daniel told her she was worse because she knew better."
Emily swallowed.
"Then he told her about the trust."
Evan looked up.
"He told her he removed her?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He was angry."
Emily closed her eyes.
A mistake.
An understandable one.
But a mistake.
Evan continued.
"Ruth changed."
"What do you mean?"
"Stopped crying."
Emily knew exactly what he meant.
"She asked who replaced her."
"Did he answer?"
"No."
"Then?"
"She said he had no right."
"Daniel said it was his daughter's money."
Emily's eyes filled.
Evan looked away.
"Ruth said Khloe was Walker blood."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"She loves that phrase."
"Daniel told her Emily was his family."
Emily looked down.
Exactly like the recording.
Maybe it had been a repeated argument for months.
"What happened at ten fifty two?"
"I was leaving. Ruth followed Daniel outside."
"You took the picture?"
"My security camera did."
"Did she follow him in her car?"
"No."
Emily looked up.
"No?"
"Daniel drove away."
"Ruth stayed?"
"Yes."
"How long?"
"About twenty minutes."
Emily felt a small loosening in her chest.
Not proof of innocence.
But less frightening.
"Then how did Daniel die?"
"Accident."
"You believe that?"
"Yes."
"Why were you warning me about that night?"
"Because Ruth has used everyone's guilt about his death ever since."
Emily stared.
Evan continued.
"She tells Tyler his argument drove Daniel away angry. She told me if I hadn't stolen money, Daniel wouldn't have been on that road that morning. She told Denise Daniel died believing his family was falling apart."
"Manipulation."
"Yes."
"Was Daniel going to Kessler that morning?"
"I think so."
"Do you know why?"
"To give him the theft records."
Emily nodded.
The accident did not need a murderer to remain tragic.
It had been random.
Wet road.
Wrong moment.
But Ruth had turned coincidence into emotional chains.
"What is Ruth trying to achieve now?"
"Control."
"Beyond the trust."
Evan hesitated.
"She thinks if she controls Khloe, she can make Daniel's life continue the way she wants."
Emily felt disgusted.
"Khloe isn't Daniel."
"I know."
"Ruth doesn't."
Evan slid another page across the table.
Walker Family Holdings ownership.
Fifty percent Ruth.
Fifty percent Tyler.
"If your house had transferred Monday, they planned to borrow against it."
"How much?"
"Three hundred thousand."
Emily nearly laughed.
"Tyler's debt."
"Most of it."
"And Khloe's trust?"
"Commercial building as collateral for another loan."
"Which they couldn't legally do for Tyler's benefit."
"Not legally."
Emily sat back.
"So everything Daniel built would have been leveraged to save Tyler."
"Yes."
"And Ruth calls that protecting the family."
"Yes."
Emily checked the time.
Eight twelve.
Sunday.
The day Ruth believed she would win.
"Come to the house at noon."
Evan shook his head.
"She'll know I warned you."
"Yes."
"Tyler will hate me."
"He already does."
Evan almost smiled.
Emily gathered the records.
"Police?"
"Mark has them nearby."
"Denise?"
"Coming."
"Khloe?"
"With Sarah until I bring her."
"You're bringing her into that house?"
Emily's face hardened.
"Only after police are there."
"Why bring her at all?"
Emily looked at the signature pages.
"Because Ruth's story depends on pretending Khloe wanted this."
Evan frowned.
"She's seven."
"Exactly. She gets to say one sentence if she wants."
"What sentence?"
"The truth."
At nine thirty, Emily returned home.
Ruth had decorated.
White lilies.
Daniel's photographs.
His favorite music playing quietly.
Tyler wore a jacket.
The cruelty of it stunned Emily.
They were using Daniel's memorial as camouflage for stealing everything he had protected.
Ruth approached.
"Where's Khloe?"
"Sarah is bringing her."
"I said I would."
"I know."
Ruth studied her.
"You seem calm."
"I've made a decision."
Ruth's eyes brightened.
"Good."
Emily lowered her gaze.
"I can't keep doing this."
Ruth touched her arm.
"You're making the right choice."
Emily looked at Daniel's photograph.
"I hope so."
At eleven twenty seven, Denise arrived.
She carried the cream folder.
Ruth immediately led her into Daniel's office.
Emily waited thirty seconds.
Then walked toward the hallway.
The office door was not fully closed.
Ruth whispered, "Stamp it."
Denise answered, "Emily isn't here."
"She signed last night."
"I need to see her acknowledge it."
"You know that's her signature."
Denise was silent.
Ruth's voice sharpened.
"After everything I protected you from, you're going to become ethical today?"
Emily stopped breathing.
Denise said, "If anyone examines this."
"They won't."
"Ruth."
"She will be in treatment by Tuesday."
Emily's skin crawled.
"And Khloe?"
"Florida."
"Emily won't allow that."
"Emily won't have a choice."
The words were clear.
Recorded.
Emily's phone sat in her pocket.
So did Denise's.
Ruth continued.
"Once the guardianship is recognized and Emily resigns as trustee, Tyler handles Morrow Monday."
Denise said carefully, "And the trust?"
"I take control."
"What if the amendment exists?"
Ruth became quiet.
Emily leaned closer.
Then Ruth said, "It doesn't."
"You don't know that."
"I destroyed Kessler's copy."
Emily's breath caught.
Denise asked, "Daniel's?"
"Destroyed."
"Commonwealth?"
Ruth hesitated.
"They don't have one."
A lie based on hope.
Denise said, "You're sure?"
Ruth snapped.
"Stamp the paper."
Denise answered, "No."
Silence.
Emily stepped into the office.
Ruth turned.
Her face changed.
Emily looked at the cream folder.
"Problem?"
Ruth recovered.
"Denise is nervous."
"About committing fraud?"
Denise closed her eyes.
Ruth stared at Emily.
"So this was a trap."
Emily shook her head.
"No. This was your plan. I just stopped pretending not to see it."
Ruth moved toward the desk.
Emily stayed near the door.
"Guests arrive in twenty minutes," Ruth said.
"I know."
"You want them to watch you humiliate Daniel's mother?"
Emily looked at her.
"No."
May you like
She smiled sadly.
"I want them to watch Daniel's mother tell the truth."
