Chapter 5 - the locked drawer daniel left behind)

Emily did not sleep.

At two in the morning, she sat on the floor beside her bed reading every digital copy of Daniel's estate documents.

His original trust had been created four years earlier.

Ruth had indeed been named successor trustee.

But Tyler's words repeated in Emily's mind.

If Emily finds Daniel's amendment, we're dead.

An amendment had to exist.

Daniel's attorney at the time was Robert Kessler.

Emily searched her old email.

Kessler had retired eight months before Daniel died.

His law firm had closed.

She found a forwarding number.

At eight the next morning, she called.

A receptionist at another firm answered.

"Mr. Kessler is semi retired, but he receives messages."

Emily left her name.

Twenty minutes later, her phone rang.

"Emily?"

The voice was older than she remembered.

"Mr. Kessler?"

"Yes. I heard Daniel's name and called immediately."

Emily's eyes filled.

"I need to ask you something."

"Anything."

"Did Daniel amend Khloe's trust before he died?"

Silence.

Then Kessler said, "You don't have it?"

Emily's heart stopped.

"So there was one."

"Yes."

"When?"

"About three weeks before the accident."

Emily stood.

"Why wasn't it with the estate documents?"

"It should have been."

"It wasn't."

Kessler exhaled.

"Daniel came to see me alone."

"What did he change?"

"I cannot remember every detail without the file, but he removed Ruth as successor trustee."

Emily closed her eyes.

"Why?"

"He didn't give me the full story."

"What did he say?"

Kessler hesitated.

"He said his mother had started asking questions about the trust that made him uncomfortable."

"What questions?"

"Whether the trustee could borrow against property. Whether a guardian could become trustee. Whether beneficiaries could be moved between trusts."

Emily felt cold.

"Did Tyler come up?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Daniel said Tyler had debts."

Emily sat down.

"How much?"

"I don't know."

"Who did Daniel replace Ruth with?"

"A corporate fiduciary. Commonwealth Trust Services, I believe."

That was important.

Ruth could not gain control even if Emily became incapacitated.

Not under the amendment.

Unless the amendment disappeared.

Emily looked toward the hallway.

"How many originals existed?"

"At least three executed copies. One for Daniel. One for my file. One intended for you."

"I never got mine."

Kessler became quiet.

"My office storage was transferred when I retired."

"Do you still have your copy?"

"I'll look."

"Please."

"Emily, is something wrong?"

She thought of Khloe's handwriting.

"Yes."

She told him enough to make him understand.

Not everything.

When she finished, Kessler swore softly.

"Do not confront them alone."

"I won't."

"And do not sign anything."

"I won't."

"I'll call as soon as I find the file."

Emily hung up.

She had barely set down the phone when someone knocked.

Khloe entered.

"Grandma wants to know if you're coming downstairs."

"In a minute."

Khloe lingered.

"What?"

The girl closed the door.

"Grandma was in Daddy's closet."

Emily stared at her.

"When?"

"Last night."

"What was she doing?"

"Looking behind the shoes."

Emily's pulse quickened.

Daniel's closet had remained almost untouched.

Emily could not bring herself to clear it.

His suits hung on one side.

His old running shoes sat beneath them.

She walked to the closet.

Behind the shoes was nothing but wall.

Then she noticed one section of baseboard looked slightly uneven.

Daniel had renovated the closet himself.

He loved hiding practical things.

Spare keys.

Emergency cash.

Once, he had hidden Emily's birthday present in an air vent for two months.

Emily knelt.

She pressed the trim.

Nothing.

Khloe crouched beside her.

"Daddy used a coin."

Emily looked at her.

"What?"

"When I was little."

"You are little."

Khloe almost smiled.

"He put a coin here."

She pointed at a small slot.

Emily inserted a quarter.

The trim released.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Empty.

Emily's stomach dropped.

Ruth had found it.

Then Khloe said, "She dropped something."

Emily looked under the dresser.

A tiny blue plastic tab protruded from beneath the leg.

She pulled it out.

A USB drive.

Blue.

The list.

Blue folder.

Maybe unrelated.

Maybe not.

Emily plugged the drive into Daniel's old laptop.

Password protected.

She tried birthdays.

Their anniversary.

Khloe's middle name.

Nothing.

Then she remembered something Daniel used to say whenever she accused him of overcomplicating passwords.

The safest key is a memory nobody else understands.

She typed the name of the diner where he proposed.

Maple47.

The drive opened.

There were six files.

Three financial spreadsheets.

One photograph.

One audio recording.

One document titled For Emily.

Her hands shook as she opened the document.

Em,

If you ever find this, it probably means I was too much of a coward to tell you everything directly.

She stopped.

Read again.

Then continued.

Mom has been pressuring me about Khloe's trust. Tyler owes more money than he admits. I found records showing Mom paid some of his debts from an account Dad left her, and now that money is almost gone.

Emily covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

She asked me whether she could become trustee if you were temporarily unable to care for Khloe. That question scared me enough to change the trust.

I removed Mom completely.

If anything happens to you, Commonwealth becomes trustee and Khloe stays with the guardian you nominate.

Please nominate someone soon.

Do not let Mom pressure you.

And do not let Tyler move into the house.

Emily laughed once, bitterly.

Too late.

Daniel's final paragraph was worse.

There is one more thing.

Mom somehow obtained a copy of your signature from the mortgage refinance. I caught her tracing it.

She claimed she was comparing handwriting because she thought you had signed something without telling me.

I didn't believe her.

I should have told you that night.

Instead, I told her to leave.

She cried.

I felt guilty.

That's what she does.

If I am wrong, destroy this and forget it.

If I am right, please protect Khloe before you worry about protecting my memory of Mom.

I love you.

Daniel.

Emily could no longer see the screen.

Tears blurred everything.

Khloe touched her shoulder.

"Mommy?"

Emily closed the laptop and pulled her daughter close.

Daniel had known.

He had tried to protect them.

And after his death, Emily had invited the exact people he feared into their home.

Guilt hit her so hard she could barely breathe.

Then she remembered Daniel's words.

Protect Khloe before you worry about protecting my memory of Mom.

Emily wiped her face.

She opened the audio file.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"October eleventh. Conversation with Mom after she asked about Khloe's trust again."

A muffled argument began.

Ruth's voice.

"You think Emily is stronger than she is."

Daniel.

"Stop talking about my wife like she's a temporary problem."

Ruth.

"I'm talking about the future."

Daniel.

"No. You're talking about control."

Ruth.

"That house should stay with us."

Daniel.

"It is with us. Emily is my family."

Ruth.

"Until she remarries."

Daniel.

"That is none of your business."

Then Ruth said something that made Emily go completely still.

"If you're gone someday, she will take Khloe and everything else."

Daniel answered.

"If I'm gone someday, Mom, Emily gets to decide where she goes. Not you."

A long silence.

Ruth's voice returned, quiet.

"You'll regret choosing her over blood."

The recording ended.

Khloe stared at the laptop.

"Was that Daddy?"

Emily nodded.

"Was Grandma mad at him?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Emily looked at her daughter.

"Because Daddy told her no."

Khloe thought about that.

Then she whispered, "Grandma hates no."

Emily almost smiled.

"Yeah."

Her phone rang.

Robert Kessler.

She answered.

"I found the amendment."

Relief flooded her.

"Thank God."

"But Emily."

Something in his voice stopped her.

"What?"

"The original from my file is gone."

Emily stood.

"What do you mean gone?"

"The storage record shows someone requested the estate file two months after Daniel died."

"Who?"

Kessler hesitated.

"Ruth Walker."

Emily looked toward the bedroom door.

"And you gave it to her?"

"My former assistant did. Ruth told her you had authorized pickup."

Emily closed her eyes.

"Did she sign?"

"Yes."

"Send me the record."

"I will."

"Was there another copy?"

"Possibly with Commonwealth."

"Call them."

"I already did."

Emily held her breath.

"They have it."

Her knees weakened with relief.

Kessler continued.

"And they have something else."

"What?"

"A letter Daniel instructed them to release only if someone challenged your authority as Khloe's trustee."

Emily looked at the USB drive.

"What does it say?"

"They won't tell me."

"When will they release it?"

Kessler's voice was grim.

"The moment Ruth files anything."

Emily understood.

Sunday was no longer simply a trap.

It could become proof.

She could stop Ruth immediately.

Call the police.

Throw Ruth and Tyler out.

But if she moved too soon, she might never know how far the plan went or who had sent the warning messages.

She looked at Daniel's words again.

Protect Khloe.

That came first.

Always.

Emily called someone she had not spoken to in six months.

Her older sister, Sarah.

When Sarah answered, Emily said, "I need you to take Khloe tonight."

Sarah heard her voice.

"What's wrong?"

May you like

Emily looked toward the locked door.

"Everything."
