Chapter 10 - the eye in the ceiling)

Mark insisted on calling police immediately.

Emily agreed.

An officer met them at the house after Ruth left for dinner with church friends.

They found the camera in the office smoke detector.

It recorded video to a small wireless storage device hidden inside the desk.

Emily's hands trembled as the officer examined it.

"Do you own the house?"

"Yes."

"Did you consent to recording?"

"No."

"Bedroom or bathroom cameras?"

"I don't know."

They searched.

None.

Only Daniel's office.

The officer asked who installed it.

"Ruth."

"Do you know why?"

"To watch me search."

Mark added, "Potentially to document her behavior and manufacture evidence regarding mental state."

The officer raised an eyebrow.

Mark handed him a summary.

By then the story sounded absurd even to Emily.

Forged signatures.

Guardianship.

Trust.

Deed.

Hidden camera.

One way ticket.

Missing money.

Yet every piece existed.

Nothing was imaginary.

The officer took the storage device as potential evidence.

Emily asked, "Can we remove Ruth tonight?"

Mark answered.

"We can tell her to leave."

"And if she refuses?"

"You begin eviction procedures, but given the threats and fraud allegations we can also seek a protective order."

Emily felt exhausted.

"Sunday is tomorrow."

Mark studied her.

"We can end this tonight."

She looked toward Daniel's office.

Maybe they should.

Maybe waiting was reckless.

Then her phone rang.

Sarah.

Emily answered.

"Everything okay?"

Sarah's voice was tense.

"Ruth is here."

Emily's body went cold.

"What?"

"She just pulled into my driveway."

"Do not open the door."

"Khloe saw her."

"Lock everything."

Sarah's voice lowered.

"She's knocking."

Emily could hear it through the phone.

Three hard knocks.

"Call police."

"Already did."

Emily grabbed her keys.

Mark stopped her.

"Don't go alone."

The officer followed.

They drove to Sarah's house.

Ruth stood on the porch.

Sarah remained inside.

Khloe was nowhere visible.

Ruth turned when Emily arrived.

Her face showed outrage.

"You hid my granddaughter from me."

Emily stepped out.

"Leave."

Ruth saw the officer.

Her expression changed.

"What is this?"

"You need to leave."

"Why?"

"You came to someone else's house demanding a child who is not yours."

"She is my granddaughter."

"That does not make her yours."

Ruth looked toward the window.

"Khloe."

Emily moved between her and the house.

"Don't."

Ruth stared.

The officer approached.

"Ma'am, the homeowner has asked you to leave."

Ruth looked at Emily.

"You are destroying this family."

Emily almost laughed.

"Go home."

Ruth's voice dropped.

"I know you went through Daniel's office."

Emily said nothing.

"I know you stole private documents."

"My documents."

"You don't understand what you're reading."

"I understand enough."

Ruth's face became calm.

"Then why haven't you canceled Sunday?"

Emily watched her carefully.

Ruth knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough to understand Emily was playing along.

Emily said, "Because I want the family there when I tell them what you've done."

Ruth's eyes narrowed.

For a moment, the mask disappeared completely.

"Be careful."

The officer stepped closer.

"Ma'am."

Ruth ignored him.

"You think Daniel would be proud of this?"

Emily felt the old pain.

Then she remembered his letter.

Protect Khloe before you worry about protecting my memory of Mom.

"Yes."

Ruth flinched.

Emily continued.

"I think he would."

Ruth stared.

"What did you find?"

Emily smiled.

That frightened Ruth more than any accusation.

"See you tomorrow."

Ruth left.

Back inside, Khloe ran into Emily's arms.

"Grandma was yelling."

"I know."

"Are we going home?"

"Not tonight."

Khloe nodded.

Then she whispered, "I remembered something."

Emily crouched.

"What?"

"When Grandma made me write your name, Uncle Tyler took pictures."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"Pictures of what?"

"My writing."

"Anything else?"

"He had papers."

"What papers?"

"I couldn't read them."

"Did he put your writing on the papers?"

Khloe thought.

"He had a glass table."

Emily frowned.

"He put one paper under another."

Tracing.

Tyler may have used Khloe's practice signature as a template.

"Did Grandma watch?"

"Yes."

"Did Denise?"

"Not that day."

"When was this?"

"After Grandma picked me up from dance."

Thursday the previous week.

Emily had worked late.

"Where?"

"Uncle Tyler's garage."

Emily stood.

The garage.

Possibly more evidence.

Mark called police again.

They could not simply search Tyler's business without consent or a warrant.

But Evan had access.

Emily called him.

He answered on the second ring.

"I'm not going Sunday."

"Khloe says Tyler used the garage to prepare signatures."

Silence.

"Evan?"

"What do you want?"

"Do you still have access?"

"No."

"Do you know if cameras record inside?"

"Yes."

Emily's pulse jumped.

"How long is footage kept?"

"Thirty days."

"Can Tyler delete it?"

"Yes."

"Has he?"

"I don't know."

"Can you access it?"

A pause.

"Possibly."

Mark shook his head when Emily looked at him.

"No unauthorized access."

Emily repeated, "Don't do anything illegal."

Evan laughed.

"That's a new rule in this family."

"I'm serious."

"I know."

"Tell police the system exists."

Evan became quiet.

"Okay."

"Come tomorrow."

"I said no."

Emily's voice softened.

"Daniel gave you twenty four hours to do the right thing."

Silence.

"He died before you used them."

Evan did not answer.

"You've had almost a year since."

Still nothing.

"Come tomorrow."

She hung up.

At eleven that night, Mark called.

Police had spoken with a manager who shared ownership of Tyler's garage building.

The camera system existed.

Footage from the relevant day appeared intact.

Investigators would seek preservation.

Emily sat at Sarah's kitchen table.

"Will that prove it?"

"It may prove Khloe was there."

"Maybe Tyler tracing."

"Maybe."

Mark paused.

"There's more."

"What?"

"Denise called me."

Emily braced.

"She backing out?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"Ruth contacted her tonight."

"What did she say?"

"Sunday has changed."

Emily's grip tightened.

"How?"

"Ruth wants Denise there at eleven thirty instead of noon."

"Why?"

"She wants the papers notarized before guests arrive."

Emily stood.

"With whose signature?"

Mark was quiet.

"Yours."

"But I won't be there."

"Ruth told Denise you already signed."

Emily felt cold.

"So the forgery is finished."

"Apparently."

"What about Khloe?"

"Ruth said she will retrieve Khloe herself in the morning."

Emily looked toward the living room, where her daughter slept beside Sarah.

"No."

"She can't."

"No."

"Emily, we should cancel the gathering."

Emily looked at Daniel's photograph on Sarah's bookshelf.

Then at Khloe.

"No."

Mark sighed.

"Why are you still determined to do this?"

"Because Ruth doesn't just need to be stopped."

Emily's voice hardened.

"She needs to be unable to tell Khloe ten years from now that this was all a misunderstanding."

Mark understood.

"You want witnesses."

"I want the truth to exist outside her version of it."

After midnight, a final unknown message arrived.

I will come Sunday.

Emily typed back.

Evan?

The reply.

Yes.

Then another message.

But there is something you need to see first.

A photograph appeared.

Daniel stood outside Tyler's garage the night before his death.

Ruth stood beside him.

The timestamp read 10:52 PM.

Emily stared.

Ruth had lied.

May you like

And Tyler had lied.

Daniel had seen both of them.
