Chapter 9 - The Trust)

James Colton lived in a quiet house outside Greenwich.

They arrived shortly after nine the next morning.

Damiano had wanted Marina to sleep first.

She refused.

"You are not discovering what my grandmother left me while I'm in bed."

He did not argue.

Marco traveled with them.

Two additional security cars followed.

Helena remained at the mansion under private guard.

Not imprisoned.

Damiano made that distinction clear.

But Helena had no access to vehicles, financial systems, company records, or staff without supervision.

James Colton opened the door himself.

He was eighty-one.

Tall despite his age.

Silver hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

When he saw Marina, his expression changed.

"Elena's eyes."

Marina swallowed.

"People usually say I have my mother's."

"Your mother has them too."

He invited them inside.

His study smelled like old books and cedar.

A locked steel case sat on the desk.

Colton looked at Damiano.

"You look like Vittorio when he was angry."

Damiano gave a humorless smile.

"I've heard enough about my father in the past twelve hours to last a lifetime."

"Then you're finally hearing the truth."

Damiano's eyes hardened.

"Did you help him hide Gabriel?"

Colton did not flinch.

"At first."

Marina watched Damiano tense.

"Why?"

"Because Vittorio was my client. Then eventually because I was a coward."

That answer disarmed him.

Colton sat.

"Vittorio loved Elena."

Damiano said nothing.

"He also loved Helena."

Marina frowned.

"Both?"

"In different ways. That was part of the tragedy. Helena believed love was ownership. Elena believed love was truth. Vittorio wanted peace without paying the price of honesty."

Damiano looked down.

Colton continued.

"When Gabriel was born, Vittorio denied paternity publicly. Privately, he knew."

"DNA?"

"Years later."

"And the amended will?"

"Real."

Colton opened the steel case.

He removed a folder.

Inside was the original.

Signed.

Witnessed.

Notarized.

Damiano stared.

"My mother said it disappeared."

"It did."

"What is that?"

"A duplicate original. Vittorio signed two."

Marina exhaled.

Colton almost smiled.

"He knew Helena."

Damiano read the relevant section.

Twenty-five percent of Vittorio's personal company shares to Gabriel Vale.

A property trust.

Several investment accounts.

Recognition as biological son.

Damiano sat back.

"So Gabriel owns twenty-five percent."

"Not exactly."

Colton opened another folder.

"Four months after Vittorio's death, Gabriel transferred his inheritance into the Elena Vale Legacy Trust."

"And beneficiary?"

Colton looked at Marina.

"You."

Marina felt the room tilt.

"Why?"

"Because your grandmother died."

She gripped the chair.

"Tell me what happened to her."

Colton's expression darkened.

"Elena had evidence Helena forged company documents and manipulated the estate. She planned to meet prosecutors."

Damiano stiffened.

"Was my mother involved in her death?"

"I cannot prove that."

"Do you believe she was?"

Colton held his gaze.

"I believe Helena frightened Elena. I believe someone followed her car. I believe Elena drove too fast that night because she was afraid."

Marina felt tears burn.

"So Helena didn't physically cause the crash."

"Not based on anything I can prove."

"But she may have caused the fear."

"Yes."

Marina looked away.

Colton continued.

"Gabriel blamed himself. He had pushed Elena to expose everything. After her death, he wanted nothing connected to the Riccis."

"So he transferred the shares."

"To a trust for you. You were Elena's only grandchild."

"Why not my mother?"

"Catherine refused."

That sounded exactly like her mother.

"Why wasn't I told?"

"Elena requested that you not learn of it unless one of three conditions occurred."

Colton counted them.

"Helena attempted to interfere with your life."

Marina laughed bitterly.

"Condition met."

"You married a Ricci."

"Definitely met."

"Or Gabriel requested disclosure."

Damiano leaned forward.

"Did he?"

"Three days ago."

Everyone went still.

Colton opened another envelope.

"Gabriel came here."

Marina stared.

"He's in Connecticut?"

"He was."

"What did he want?"

"To activate the trust."

Damiano looked at Colton.

"Why now?"

"Because Marina is pregnant."

Silence.

Marina's hand instinctively covered her abdomen.

"How did he know?"

Colton did not answer immediately.

"Simon."

Damiano's face tightened.

"So Simon was spying on us."

"Protecting Marina, in his mind."

"He watched my wife without permission."

"I didn't say it was right."

"Where is Gabriel?"

"I don't know."

"When did you last see him?"

"Three days ago."

"What did he say?"

Colton looked at Marina.

"He said Helena had begun repeating history."

Marina's skin chilled.

"He knew what she was doing to me?"

"He knew enough."

"Then why didn't he call me?"

"He believed you wouldn't trust a stranger claiming to be your uncle."

"He was right."

Colton nodded.

"So he decided to create evidence you couldn't ignore."

"The suitcase."

"That was Simon."

"Did Gabriel authorize it?"

"I don't know."

Damiano looked at the brass key.

"We found this outside the mansion."

Colton took it.

His expression changed.

"Where?"

"Near a service road after someone broke into our archive."

Colton examined the key.

"This opens a private deposit box."

"Yours?"

"Elena's."

Marina stared.

"Where?"

Colton looked at her.

"Beneath the old Vale house."

"There's a house?"

"Still standing."

"What's inside the box?"

"I don't know."

"You have the key."

"I had a key."

Damiano frowned.

"Had?"

Colton held up the brass key.

"This is not mine."

Marco leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

"My key is here."

Colton opened his desk drawer.

An identical brass key lay inside.

Marina stared at the one from the mansion.

"So there were two."

Colton shook his head.

"No."

Damiano's expression sharpened.

"Then this is a copy."

Colton examined it more closely.

"Yes."

"Who had access to the original?"

Colton's face changed.

"Gabriel."

The doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

Marco immediately moved toward the window.

A black sedan had stopped outside.

A man stepped out.

Tall.

About fifty.

Dark hair threaded with gray.

He looked toward the house.

Marina's breath caught.

She had never seen him.

Yet something in his face felt familiar.

Colton whispered, "Gabriel."

Damiano stood.

The man walked toward the front door carrying a small wooden box.

And in that moment, Marina understood the suitcase had never been the end of a scheme.

It had been an invitation.
