Chapter 4 - The Second Suitcase)

The second suitcase was black.
Old.
Scuffed.
Nothing like Helena's expensive luggage.
Security brought it into the garage rather than the house.
Marco insisted everyone remain behind the yellow line his men had taped across the floor until the suitcase was checked.
No explosive.
No electronic trigger.
No obvious danger.
Only a luggage tag.
GABRIEL VALE.
Helena refused to come downstairs.
Damiano ordered no one to force her.
"Keep someone outside her door."
Marina stood beside him in the garage.
"You don't have to open it."
"Yes, I do."
Marco snapped on gloves.
The latches clicked.
Inside were files.
Hundreds of pages.
Some were old enough that the paper had yellowed.
Corporate ledgers.
Letters.
Photographs.
Copies of canceled checks.
A cassette tape.
A silver watch.
And a sealed envelope with one word written across the front.
DAMIANO.
He opened it.
The letter inside was short.
Damiano,
If you are reading this, Helena has already begun lying.
She will tell you Elena Vale wanted money.
She will tell you your father was manipulated.
She will tell you Gabriel is a stranger trying to destroy your family.
Ask her why your father changed his will three days before he died.
Ask her why the original will disappeared.
Ask her why Simon Vale has been receiving payments for eighteen years.
And most importantly, ask your wife why Helena has been trying to make her leave you.
She already knows the answer, even if she doesn't know she knows it.
Damiano read the final line twice.
Then he handed the letter to Marina.
She stared at it.
"I don't know what that means."
Damiano believed her immediately.
"Neither do I."
Marco lifted the silver watch from the suitcase.
Damiano froze.
"My father's."
"You recognize it?"
"He wore it every day."
Damiano took it.
The watch had stopped at 11:17.
He turned it over.
An engraving on the back read:
V.R. TO G.V.
FOR THE TIME WE LOST.
Damiano's expression changed.
"Gabriel had this."
Marina examined the cassette tape.
A handwritten label had one date.
May 18, 2008.
Damiano's father had died on May 21, 2008.
Three days later.
The same three days mentioned in the letter.
"We need something to play this."
Marco sent a guard to search the storage rooms.
Helena eventually came downstairs on her own.
She stepped into the garage and saw the open black suitcase.
Her entire body went rigid.
"You opened it."
Damiano looked at her.
"It has my name on it."
"You should have burned it."
Marina stared.
Helena realized what she had said.
Damiano placed the watch on the table.
"You told me Gabriel Vale doesn't matter."
"He doesn't."
"Then why did my father give him this?"
Helena looked at the engraving.
For a fraction of a second, grief crossed her face.
Real grief.
Then it hardened into bitterness.
"He was weak."
"Father?"
"Your father spent his whole life letting guilt control him."
"Was Gabriel his son?"
Helena looked directly at Damiano.
"Yes."
The word struck harder than shouting could have.
Damiano stood perfectly still.
Marina moved closer to him.
Helena continued.
"Your father cheated on me. Elena became pregnant. He denied it publicly because that was what I demanded. Years later, he decided he wanted to repair his conscience."
"By recognizing Gabriel?"
"By humiliating me."
Damiano's voice was low.
"Recognizing his son wasn't humiliating you."
"Do not lecture me about what I endured."
"I didn't betray you. He did."
Helena's eyes flashed.
"Yet I was expected to smile while he divided everything we built with some woman and her bastard."
Marco looked away.
Marina's stomach turned.
Damiano's expression went cold.
"Don't call him that."
Helena laughed bitterly.
"You've never met him."
"He's still my brother."
"No. He is a weapon your father aimed at me from the grave."
Damiano picked up the letter.
"Why did the original will disappear?"
Helena's face changed.
"Because there was no new will."
"Why did Simon Vale receive money for eighteen years?"
"He blackmailed me."
"For what?"
"For old family secrets."
"Which secrets?"
Helena's silence answered.
The guard returned with an old cassette player from a basement storage cabinet.
Marco inserted the tape.
Static filled the garage.
Then a man's voice.
Older.
Tired.
Damiano gripped the edge of the table.
He knew the voice instantly.
His father.
"May eighteenth, two thousand eight. My name is Vittorio Ricci. I am recording this because I no longer trust that the documents I signed will survive me."
Helena shut her eyes.
The tape continued.
"I have spent twenty-eight years failing two sons in different ways. Damiano received my name but too much expectation. Gabriel received my blood but none of my courage."
Damiano stopped breathing.
Marina watched him.
Vittorio continued.
"I have amended my estate. Damiano retains control of Ricci Family Holdings. Gabriel is to receive twenty-five percent of my personal shares and the Vale property trust. Helena knows this. She has threatened to contest it."
Helena whispered, "Turn it off."
Damiano did not move.
The voice continued.
"If anything happens to the documents, attorney James Colton has copies."
Marco immediately wrote the name down.
Then Vittorio said something that changed everything.
"Helena has also taken an unhealthy interest in controlling Damiano's personal life. I fear she will one day punish anyone he loves if she believes that person weakens her influence."
Marina looked at Helena.
Helena stared at the floor.
The recording crackled.
"I hope my son chooses better than I did. A family is not protected by control. It is destroyed by it."
The tape ended.
Silence filled the garage.
Damiano's face was pale.
Marina expected him to confront Helena.
Instead, he asked one question.
"Why Marina?"
Helena looked up.
He held the letter.
"It says she knows why you've been trying to make her leave me."
Helena said nothing.
Damiano stepped closer.
"Why my wife?"
Helena's gaze moved to Marina.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Then she said, "Because she was never supposed to be able to give you what Gabriel could take away."
Marina frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Helena looked at her stomach.
Only for a moment.
But Marina saw it.
And suddenly, she remembered the doctor's appointment mentioned in the hidden photographs.
The appointment Helena had somehow known about.
The appointment Marina had attended alone.
The appointment where her doctor had told her something Marina had not yet told Damiano.
Her hand moved instinctively to her abdomen.
Damiano saw.
His face changed.
"Marina?"
She looked at him.
Tears suddenly filled her eyes.
"I was going to tell you tonight."
Helena went completely still.
Damiano whispered, "Tell me what?"
Marina took his hand.
"I'm pregnant."
For one second, the entire room disappeared from Damiano's face.
Shock.
Joy.
Fear.
Then he looked at his mother.
May you like
And whatever Helena had been hiding was no longer about money.
It was about inheritance.
