Chapter 2 - What Helena Recognized)

Damiano's study had always been the calmest room in the mansion.
Dark walnut shelves lined the walls. A stone fireplace faced two leather chairs. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the west lawn, where the late afternoon sun was beginning to soften into gold.
That evening, the room felt like an interrogation chamber.
The cream suitcase sat on Damiano's desk.
Helena stood beside the fireplace.
Marina sat in one of the leather chairs with a glass of water between both hands.
Marco remained near the door.
Damiano turned the inventory card over.
"Before she destroys the rest."
Helena looked toward the windows.
"Meaningless."
"You recognized the handwriting."
"I did no such thing."
"You didn't ask what was written."
"I heard you read it."
Damiano had not.
Marina watched Helena realize that.
A small mistake.
But Helena Ricci was not a woman accustomed to making mistakes.
Damiano unzipped the suitcase.
Inside were Helena's clothes, folded with astonishing precision.
Dresses.
Nightwear.
Two pairs of shoes.
A jewelry case.
Personal toiletries.
Documents.
Everything someone would pack if Helena were leaving for at least several days.
Marina rose slowly.
"Those weren't in there this afternoon."
Damiano looked at her.
"You're sure?"
"I cleaned the inside. It was empty."
Helena scoffed.
"Marina can barely remember whether she's eaten lunch."
Damiano turned so sharply Helena stopped speaking.
"Don't."
One word.
No volume.
Helena looked away.
Damiano lifted out the clothing.
At the bottom was a thick brown envelope.
Helena moved.
It was almost instinctive.
One step toward the desk.
Marco immediately stepped between her and the suitcase.
Damiano saw everything.
He picked up the envelope.
There was no name on the front.
Inside were photocopies of bank statements.
Marina moved closer.
The first page showed a transfer for ninety thousand dollars.
The second showed another for one hundred and twenty thousand.
Then sixty-five thousand.
All from accounts connected to Ricci Family Holdings.
All sent to a private company called Bellweather Advisory.
Damiano frowned.
"I've never heard of this firm."
Marco said, "Neither have I."
Helena laughed once.
"This is what all the drama is about? Business statements?"
Damiano flipped through the pages.
His expression tightened.
The transfers had occurred over eighteen months.
Nearly two million dollars in total.
Then Marina noticed the authorization code.
"Damiano."
He looked at her.
She pointed.
The approval initials were D.R.
Damiano Ricci.
His initials.
His supposed authorization.
But Damiano was staring at the page as if he had never seen it.
"I didn't approve these."
Helena crossed her arms.
"Then your finance department made an error."
"For eighteen months?"
"Your company is enormous."
"Not enormous enough to lose two million dollars."
Marina looked at the date of the earliest transfer.
Something about it felt familiar.
February 12.
She whispered the date.
Damiano glanced at her.
"What?"
"February twelfth."
"Yes."
"That was the week after our wedding."
Helena's expression did not change.
But her breathing did.
Marina saw it.
Damiano continued searching the envelope.
At the bottom was a photograph.
Not a photocopy.
A real printed photograph.
It showed Helena standing outside a small brick building with a man Marina did not recognize.
The picture had been taken from across a street.
A date was printed in the corner.
Three weeks earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
ASK HER ABOUT ELENA.
Helena's face emptied.
Marina had never seen a person lose color so quickly.
Damiano looked at his mother.
"Who's Elena?"
"No one."
The answer came too fast.
Damiano held up the photograph.
"Who's the man?"
"I don't know."
"You're standing beside him."
"I meet hundreds of people."
"Who's Elena?"
Helena looked at Marina.
It was not a random glance.
It lasted too long.
Marina felt her heartbeat change.
"What?"
Helena said nothing.
Damiano stepped closer.
"Mother."
"Stop calling me that as though I'm on trial."
"You are standing next to evidence of stolen company funds, forged approvals, and a message telling me to ask you about someone named Elena."
"Evidence planted in my luggage by some lunatic hiding inside your house."
The sentence landed heavily.
Because it was true.
Whatever Helena had done or had not done, someone had planted the documents.
Someone had packed the suitcase.
Someone had disabled the cameras.
Someone had known where to find private company records.
Damiano turned to Marco.
"Search every room."
"Already started."
"Staff?"
"Gathered in the main dining room."
"No one leaves."
"Understood."
Helena pointed toward Marina.
"This started after she entered my room."
Marina stared at her.
Damiano's expression sharpened.
"Careful."
"She's been in my dressing room all day. She admits the suitcase was there. Perhaps your fragile wife isn't as helpless as she performs."
Marina stood.
For months, Helena's cruelty had made her quieter.
Now something broke.
Not loudly.
Cleanly.
"I didn't pack your suitcase."
Helena smiled coldly.
"Of course."
"But you know who Elena is."
Helena's smile disappeared.
Marina stepped closer.
"I can see it."
"You see whatever helps you play victim."
"No. I see fear."
Helena's eyes flashed.
Damiano looked between them.
Then a knock sounded at the study door.
Marco opened it.
One of the security men stood outside.
"Sir, we found something."
"Where?"
"Mrs. Helena Ricci's bedroom."
Helena took one involuntary step backward.
Damiano noticed.
"What?"
The guard handed Marco a small black device in an evidence pouch.
Marco looked at it.
Then at Damiano.
"A signal jammer."
Helena shook her head.
"No."
"It was behind the wardrobe."
"No."
"Strong enough to disable the west hall cameras."
"I have never seen that thing."
Damiano stared at his mother.
For the first time since entering the laundry room, there was something in his expression beyond anger.
Betrayal.
Helena saw it.
"I did not put that there."
Damiano turned to Marco.
"Anything else?"
The guard hesitated.
"Yes."
"What?"
"We found a hidden compartment beneath the floor of her closet."
Helena closed her eyes.
Only for a second.
But Marina saw.
Damiano's voice dropped.
"What's inside?"
The guard answered.
"Photographs of Mrs. Marina Ricci."
Marina stopped breathing.
"Photographs doing what?"
The guard looked uncomfortable.
"Sleeping. Walking in the garden. Entering the doctor's office. Meeting friends."
Damiano's face hardened.
"How many?"
"Dozens."
Marina looked at Helena.
Helena stared at the floor.
And the mystery of the packed suitcase suddenly became something far more personal.
Someone had wanted Damiano to discover Helena's secrets.
May you like
But one question remained.
Why now?
