Chapter 12 - The House Elena Left Behind)

The Vale house had been empty for sixteen years.

It stood outside a small Connecticut town at the end of a narrow road lined with maple trees.

White paint peeled from the siding.

The porch leaned slightly.

The windows were dark.

Marina stared at it through the windshield.

"My mother grew up here."

Gabriel nodded from the back seat.

"So did I."

Damiano glanced at him.

"You lived together?"

"For a few years. Catherine was older. She left for college before things became complicated."

Marco's team surrounded the property.

No police had been called yet.

Damiano hated that.

But Simon's staged kidnapping, the unclear threat, and the possibility that evidence could disappear made everyone cautious.

They entered through the front.

Dust.

Old furniture.

A grandfather clock frozen at 11:17.

The same time engraved emotionally into Gabriel through Vittorio's stopped watch.

Marina noticed.

"Why eleven seventeen?"

Gabriel looked at the clock.

"That was the time my mother received the call that Vittorio died."

Marina said nothing.

They searched the ground floor.

Empty.

Upstairs.

Empty.

Then Marco found fresh footprints leading toward the cellar.

The basement door was locked.

Gabriel used an old key from his ring.

The smell below was damp and metallic.

At the far end of the basement stood a brick wall with a recessed steel door.

James Colton's copied key fit.

Inside was not a deposit box.

It was a room.

Shelves.

Files.

Old photographs.

Audio tapes.

Company ledgers.

Everything Elena had preserved.

Marina whispered, "Oh my God."

Gabriel looked overwhelmed.

"I never knew."

"You had the key."

"To the steel door. I thought it opened a box. Colton never told me this existed."

Damiano opened one ledger.

Handwritten records from Ricci Textiles.

Payments.

Names.

Dates.

Illegal kickbacks involving several executives from decades earlier.

One name repeated.

Charles Fenwick.

Gabriel stared.

"He was working with Helena."

Damiano shook his head.

"Or using her."

Marina found a file labeled VITTORIO.

Inside were letters.

Dozens.

Most addressed to Elena.

One to Gabriel.

One to Catherine.

And one to Helena.

Damiano opened that one.

He read in silence.

Then handed it to Marina.

Helena,

I will no longer allow you to punish Gabriel for what I did. You were betrayed by me, not by him. If you continue threatening Elena or interfering with either child, I will remove you from every family trust I control.

You have mistaken fear for loyalty for too long.

Vittorio

Marina exhaled.

"So Helena knew she could lose everything."

Gabriel nodded.

"And Fenwick knew it too."

A noise sounded upstairs.

Marco raised his hand.

Everyone went silent.

Footsteps.

More than one person.

Marco's guards moved toward the stairs.

A man's voice called down.

"Gabriel?"

Simon.

Gabriel ran toward the doorway.

Simon appeared at the top of the stairs.

He looked exhausted but unharmed.

Behind him stood Peter Lawson.

Lawson held no weapon.

His hands were raised.

"Before anyone assumes anything," Lawson said, "I came here because Simon called me."

Damiano stared.

"You were in the SUV."

"Yes."

"With Fenwick."

"Yes."

"And Simon."

"Yes."

Lawson stepped down.

"Fenwick believed Simon was helping him destroy the trust documents."

Gabriel looked at Simon.

"You infiltrated him too?"

Simon gave a tired smile.

"I've had a complicated year."

Damiano was not amused.

"Start talking."

Simon descended.

"Fenwick discovered Vittorio's duplicate will seventeen years ago."

"How?"

"He had access to estate records."

Gabriel nodded.

"He was on the board."

"Fenwick realized Gabriel's shares could shift control of the company someday. He also discovered Helena had forged the version used in probate."

Marina understood.

"So he blackmailed Helena."

"Yes."

Damiano frowned.

"I thought you did."

"I took money from her too."

Simon did not look proud.

"I wanted resources to find the hidden records. But most Bellweather transfers were redirected by Fenwick."

Lawson continued.

"I found inconsistencies six months ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?" Damiano asked.

"Because every suspicious approval carried your authorization."

Damiano's face tightened.

"You thought I was involved."

"At first."

Lawson looked at Marina.

"Then Mrs. Ricci's trust activation process triggered an old notification in our legal archive. I realized someone had been burying ownership records for years."

"Fenwick?"

"Yes."

"Why help him yesterday?"

"I was gathering evidence."

Damiano laughed coldly.

"Everyone in this family enjoys undercover operations."

Lawson accepted that.

Simon walked toward the shelves.

"I staged the photograph to make Gabriel come. I leaked the midnight demand through a phone Fenwick knew about. I wanted him to believe the trust release would be brought to the mansion."

"So he'd go there?"

"No. So he'd come here."

Marina frowned.

"Why?"

Simon touched the brick wall.

"Because Fenwick has spent seventeen years looking for this room."

Gabriel looked around.

"And now he knows where it is."

Simon went still.

Damiano stared at him.

"You led him here."

Simon's face changed.

"I thought he was behind us."

Marco's radio crackled.

A guard outside shouted.

"Vehicle approaching fast."

Then another voice.

"Two vehicles."

Damiano looked toward the basement stairs.

Simon whispered, "That's him."

Marco ordered everyone back.

Marina stared at the shelves.

Seventeen years of truth.

Proof of inheritance.

Proof of fraud.

Proof of blackmail.

Enough to destroy careers and reputations.

Fenwick did not need to win legally if he could destroy the evidence.

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Glass breaking.

Marco swore.

"Back exit."

Gabriel pointed toward the rear basement corridor.

They moved.

Then Marina saw something on the lowest shelf.

A small metal box labeled MARINA.

She stopped.

Damiano grabbed her hand.

"Leave it."

"It has my name."

"Marina."

The smell of gasoline drifted down the stairs.

Everyone froze.

May you like

Fenwick wasn't coming for the files.

He was coming to burn the house.
