Chapter 8 - The Mansion of SecretsThe search began shortly after midnight.
Investigators entered through the front and rear doors while technicians disabled the mansion’s private security system.
Victor and Caleb were found in the dining room.
Grant had already provided the location of the basement chamber where Tessa had been held. Inside, investigators discovered a wooden chair bolted to the floor, leather restraints, medication bottles, and a portable signature device.
A dark leather strap lay behind a cabinet.
Its buckle carried the Hale triangle.
The metal edge matched the shape pressed into Tessa’s wrist.
In the wine cellar, technicians found the hidden server behind a false wall.
Victor had attempted to erase it remotely, but Grant had given investigators an older access code that interrupted the deletion.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Victor had recorded business partners, politicians, employees, family members, and guests for more than fifteen years.
He used the recordings as protection and blackmail.
The files also contained footage from the basement.
No one needed to watch more than a few seconds to understand what had happened to Tessa.
Nora stopped the video before it became unnecessarily distressing.
“It is enough,” she said.
In Victor’s office, Daniel found the bronze horse statue. He removed the base and discovered a flash drive wrapped in black cloth.
Before investigators could examine it, Caleb broke.
He accused Victor of ordering the attack.
Victor called him weak.
Caleb responded by admitting his own involvement and describing how Victor had forced Tessa’s hand onto the electronic signature pad.
The exchange was recorded.
Then Tessa arrived with medical support.
Daniel had not expected her to leave the hospital, but she explained that Grant’s testimony had reminded her of a second password connected to Margaret’s birthday. Investigators needed it to access the encrypted files.
Victor stared at her.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Tessa entered the password.
The server unlocked.
Financial records revealed decades of fraud. Victor had stolen from Margaret’s trust, bribed officials, manipulated property values, and used shell companies to hide debt.
One folder contained medical communications from the week Margaret died.
Victor had instructed a private doctor to delay sending her to a hospital after she complained of chest pain.
The evidence did not conclusively prove he intended to kill her, but it showed that he valued financial secrecy above her safety.
Tessa covered her mouth as she read the messages.
Daniel stood beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
“My mother asked for help,” she whispered. “And he waited.”
Victor spoke from across the room.
“She was going to destroy everything.”
Tessa turned toward him.
“She was trying to stop you from destroying us.”
“You have no idea what it takes to build a family legacy.”
“A legacy?” Tessa looked around the mansion. “You built a prison and taught everyone inside it to call the walls protection.”
Officers placed Victor under arrest.
Caleb was also handcuffed, though his cooperation would later be considered by prosecutors.
Before Victor was taken away, he looked at Daniel.
“You think you saved her?”
