Chapter 3 - The Missing Seventy-Two HoursMilitary investigators had no automatic authority over a civilian attack, but Colonel Reeves knew Daniel’s deployment status created serious security concerns.

Tessa had access to Daniel’s emergency contacts, travel records, and military family documents. If someone had targeted her while Daniel was returning from an overseas assignment, the motive had to be examined carefully.

Reeves contacted Special Agent Nora Bennett, a former military police officer now assigned to a joint investigative unit.

Nora arrived at the hospital before midnight.

She was direct and observant, with a habit of allowing silence to make other people uncomfortable.

“What do we know about the last time anyone saw Tessa?” she asked.

Daniel opened his messages.

“Six days ago, she attended a charity dinner hosted by her father. She sent me a photograph before she left.”

In the image, Tessa wore a dark green dress and stood inside the entrance of the Hale mansion.

Her smile looked forced.

Nora enlarged the background.

Caleb stood near the staircase, watching her.

“After the dinner?” Nora asked.

“She texted that she was staying overnight because of a snowstorm.”

“Was there a storm?”

Daniel checked the date.

The weather had been clear.

The following morning, Tessa had sent one final message.

I found something Mom left for me. I need to understand it before I tell you.

Then nothing.

Nora requested traffic-camera footage, phone-location data, and security recordings from businesses near the Hale estate.

The first discovery came quickly.

Tessa’s car had never left the family property.

The second discovery was worse.

At 3:14 a.m., on the morning Tessa was found, one of Victor’s company vehicles had traveled from the Hale estate toward the rural road where she was discovered.

The vehicle returned forty minutes later.

Its driver had switched off the internal tracking system, but a highway camera had captured its license plate.

The truck was registered to Hale Agricultural Holdings.

Nora called the county detective assigned to the case.

By sunrise, they had enough evidence to request access to the vehicle.

But when investigators reached the company garage, the truck had been cleaned with industrial chemicals.

Victor’s attorney claimed it had been prepared for sale.

Nora did not believe in coincidences.

Meanwhile, Daniel examined Tessa’s belongings.

Her coat had been torn near one sleeve. Her shoes were missing. In one pocket, investigators found a small brass key.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

It belonged to an antique writing desk that had once belonged to Margaret Hale.

After Margaret’s death, Victor had moved the desk into a locked room at the family mansion.

Tessa had asked for it several times.

Victor always refused.

Daniel turned the key over in his hand.

“She said she found something her mother left behind.”

Nora nodded.

“Then we need to know what was inside that desk.”

Obtaining a warrant for the mansion would require stronger evidence. Victor’s attorneys were already challenging every request.

But Tessa and Daniel owned a small cabin on land adjoining the Hale estate. Margaret had transferred it to Tessa before her death.

Daniel wondered whether Tessa had hidden something there.

He and Nora drove to the cabin that afternoon.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, furniture had been overturned. Floorboards had been lifted. Kitchen cabinets stood open.

Someone had searched the entire house.

On the bedroom wall, a framed wedding photograph had been smashed.

Daniel picked it up.

Behind the photograph, written faintly on the wall, were three words in Tessa’s handwriting:

LOOK UNDER MOTHER.

Nora stared at the message.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel remembered the old family photograph of Margaret beside the stable.

And beneath Margaret’s feet in that photograph had been the Hale family symbol.
