Chapter 7 - The Emergency HearingVictor entered the courthouse surrounded by attorneys.
He wore a dark blue suit and carried himself like a grieving father forced to make an impossible decision.
News reporters gathered outside. Someone from Victor’s team had informed the media that Tessa Mercer had suffered a “mental-health crisis” after years of stress related to her husband’s military service.
Daniel saw the headlines on a television in the hospital corridor.

Victor had transformed an attack into a rescue story.
The emergency hearing began without Tessa physically present. She appeared through a secure video connection from her hospital room, with Daniel and Dr. Monroe beside her.
Victor’s attorney presented the forged medical records.
He claimed Tessa had become paranoid, had injured herself, and had disappeared after accusing her family of stealing from her.
Then Dr. Monroe testified.
“Tessa’s injuries are not self-inflicted,” she stated. “The restraint marks, sedatives, dehydration, and pattern of bruising are consistent with prolonged captivity.”
Victor’s attorney tried to challenge her.
“Doctor, are you an expert in criminal investigations?”
“No,” Dr. Monroe replied. “I am an expert in recognizing what happened to my patient’s body.”
Nora then presented traffic footage of the Hale company truck.
She introduced the letters from Margaret, the trust documents, and evidence of forged signatures.
Finally, Daniel played part of Margaret’s recording.
Victor’s own voice echoed through the courtroom:
You will sign, Margaret. One way or another.
Victor’s expression remained controlled, but his fingers tightened around a pen.
The judge denied his request for guardianship and issued an order freezing all transactions involving Margaret’s trust.
Then Nora received a message.
Grant Keller had been found.
Police located him inside an isolated hunting lodge owned by one of Victor’s companies. He had attempted to burn several bags of documents.
Among the recovered items was a medical authorization form containing Tessa’s forced electronic signature.
Grant requested a deal.
In exchange for protection, he offered to lead investigators to the mansion’s hidden server.
Victor left the courthouse before reporters could question him.
He returned to his estate and ordered his employees to leave.
Caleb, released temporarily into supervised custody so he could assist investigators, warned Nora that Victor would destroy the server before police obtained the final warrant.
The authorities moved faster.
By evening, vehicles surrounded the Hale mansion.
Daniel remained at the hospital until Tessa insisted he go.
“You need to see this through,” she said.
“I’m not leaving you unprotected.”
Colonel Reeves entered the room.
“She won’t be unprotected.”
Tessa reached for Daniel’s hand.
“My father always counted on people being afraid of him. Go show him we aren’t afraid anymore.”
Daniel bent down and kissed her forehead.
“I’ll come back.”
“You promised that before your deployment.”
“And I kept that promise.”
As Daniel walked toward the door, Tessa called after him.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
“There may be another flash drive,” she said. “My father kept it inside the base of the bronze horse statue in his office. He called it his insurance.”
