Chapter 5 - Tessa Opened Her EyesTessa regained consciousness the next morning.

Daniel was sitting beside her when her fingers moved inside his hand.

At first, he thought it was an involuntary reaction.

Then her eyes slowly opened.

She appeared confused by the machines and bright hospital lights. When she tried to move, pain crossed her face.

Daniel stood immediately.

“Tessa, don’t move. You’re safe.”

Her gaze struggled to focus.

“Daniel?”

“I’m here.”

Tears formed in her eyes.

“You came home.”

He pressed her hand gently against his cheek.

“I’m not leaving.”

Dr. Monroe entered and asked Daniel to step back while she examined Tessa. Her questions were simple at first.

Did Tessa know her name?

Did she know where she was?

Did she remember the date?

Tessa answered slowly but correctly.

Then Dr. Monroe asked whether she remembered how she had been injured.

Tessa’s breathing changed.

Her eyes moved toward the glass doors.

“Lock it,” she whispered.

Daniel closed and locked the door.

“They can’t come in,” he assured her.

“My father?”

“He isn’t here.”

“Caleb?”

“No.”

Tessa began shaking.

Dr. Monroe adjusted her medication and encouraged her to breathe slowly.

Fragments of memory returned.

At the charity dinner, Victor had taken Tessa into Margaret’s old office. He showed her financial documents and asked her to sign them.

Tessa refused.

She had recently opened the antique writing desk using a duplicate key hidden inside one of Margaret’s books. Inside, she found a copy of the trust and a note explaining the location of the metal box beneath the stable stone.

Victor realized she knew the truth.

“He said Mom’s property belonged to the family,” Tessa whispered. “He said Daniel would convince me to sell it after he returned.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I never would.”

“I told him that.”

Victor ordered Caleb to take Tessa’s phone.

She tried to leave, but the mansion’s private security chief, Grant Keller, blocked the door.

Grant had worked for Victor for twenty years. Tessa had known him since childhood.

“They locked me in the old basement room,” she said.

Daniel fought to keep his voice calm.

“How long?”

“I don’t know. Two days, maybe three.”

They gave her sedatives mixed with water. When she remained conscious, Victor brought documents and threatened Daniel’s career.

“He said he had contacts who could make it look like you had sold military information,” Tessa said. “He said you would go to prison if I didn’t sign.”

“Did you sign?”

“Not willingly.”

She looked at her injured wrist.

“They tied my hands to the chair.”

Dr. Monroe placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“You do not have to continue today.”

But Tessa shook her head.

“They pressed my thumb onto an electronic pad. Caleb held my arm. Grant restrained me.”

“What happened afterward?” Daniel asked.

“I heard them arguing. Caleb said I needed a hospital. My father said I only needed to disappear until after my birthday.”

Her voice broke.

“Grant put me in the truck.”

Tessa remembered waking briefly on the road. Grant had stopped the vehicle after receiving a phone call. While he argued outside, she removed her wedding ring and hid it inside her coat.

She also found a sharp metal edge beneath the seat and cut through part of the restraint.

When Grant opened the rear door, she pushed past him and ran.

She remembered headlights approaching.

Then nothing.

Daniel leaned closer.

“You survived because you kept fighting.”

Tessa looked at him.

“No. I survived because they started fighting each other.”

May you like

She swallowed painfully.

“There is a camera system in the basement. My father records everyone. The recordings are stored in the pool-house office.”
