Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Wanted ProtectionInvestigators found Caleb at a luxury hotel near the Denver airport.
He was preparing to leave the country under a false name.
Nora arrested him for kidnapping, unlawful restraint, fraud, and conspiracy.
At first, Caleb demanded an attorney and refused to answer questions.
Then he learned that Victor had disappeared without him.
Caleb’s loyalty collapsed within minutes.
“He promised we would all be protected,” Caleb said. “He said Tessa would sign and return home before Daniel arrived.”
Nora sat across from him in the interview room.
“Your sister was found unconscious beside a road.”
“I didn’t put her there.”
“But you helped restrain her.”
Caleb looked down.
“I held her arm once.”
“You held her arm while someone forced her biometric signature onto fraudulent documents.”
“My father said the company would collapse!”
“And that made it acceptable?”
“You don’t understand him.”
Nora leaned forward.
“Then help me understand.”
Caleb described a lifetime under Victor’s control.
Victor paid his debts, chose his jobs, and threatened to remove him from the family companies whenever he resisted. Caleb had spent years competing with Tessa for approval he never truly received.
When Margaret died, Victor told Caleb that his mother had tried to destroy the family.
Caleb believed him because believing anything else would have required him to admit that his father was dangerous.
“Tessa always escaped,” Caleb said bitterly. “She married Daniel. She built her own life. I stayed.”
“So you punished her for leaving?”
Caleb’s eyes filled with shame.
“I thought she would sign. I didn’t think he would keep hurting her.”
Nora placed a photograph of Tessa’s wrist on the table.
Caleb turned away.
“We need access to the pool house,” Nora said.
“My father destroyed the recordings.”
“Tessa says he kept copies.”
Caleb remained silent.
Nora added, “Victor left you behind. He will blame you for everything.”
That reached him.
Caleb revealed that Victor maintained two recording systems. The visible system stored files in the pool-house office. A hidden backup transmitted footage to an encrypted server inside the mansion’s wine cellar.
Only Victor and Grant had access.
“What is Victor planning now?” Nora asked.
Caleb hesitated.
“He needs Tessa declared mentally incompetent before her birthday. If a court accepts the medical documents, he can act as trustee.”
“What medical documents?”
Caleb described a private physician who had been paid to create records claiming Tessa suffered from delusions, unstable behavior, and an addiction to prescription medicine.
The forged records would be presented at an emergency court hearing scheduled for the following morning.
Victor was not running.
He was trying to take legal control of Tessa while she was still hospitalized.
Nora immediately contacted the prosecutor.
Daniel returned to Tessa’s room and explained what they had learned.
Tessa looked frightened but determined.
“He has done this my entire life,” she said. “Whenever I said no, he told everyone I was emotional.”
Daniel took her hand.
“This time, you won’t face him alone.”
Tessa looked at the mark on her wrist.
“What if the judge believes him?”
“Then the judge will also hear the recording your mother left.”
For the first time since waking, Tessa’s expression softened.

“Yes,” Daniel said. “And now we finish what she started.”
