Chapter 9 - Daniel Comes Down

Daniel descended slowly.

He looked first at Vanessa.

Then the papers.

Then the phone in Claire's hand.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Claire saw it.

Calculation.

Daniel reached the basement floor.

"Vanessa."

She held up the papers.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Margaret moved toward him.

"She took them."

Daniel ignored his mother.

He looked at Vanessa.

"I can explain."

Vanessa laughed.

"You told me your wife lived in Arizona."

"She was supposed to leave."

Claire said from the chute.

"Interesting version."

Daniel looked toward her.

For the first time, real hatred appeared in his eyes.

"Give me the phone."

Claire smiled.

"No."

"Claire."

Vanessa stepped between him and the chute.

"Stay away from her."

Daniel stared.

"You don't understand what's going on."

"I understand she's trapped inside a wall."

"It was an accident."

"And you left her there."

"She threatened everyone."

Claire almost shouted.

"When?"

Daniel pointed toward her.

"This. This behavior."

Vanessa stared at him.

"What behavior? Refusing to sign away property?"

Daniel looked at Margaret.

He needed support.

Margaret immediately provided it.

"Claire has been unstable for months."

Vanessa turned.

"According to who?"

"Her mother."

Diane looked horrified.

Margaret pointed toward her.

"Tell her."

Diane opened her mouth.

No words came.

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"Diane."

Something changed in Claire's mother.

Maybe it was hearing him command her.

Maybe it was finally understanding that she was not part of Daniel's family.

She was a tool.

Diane looked at Vanessa.

Then at Claire.

And said, "I lied."

Daniel froze.

Margaret whispered.

"What?"

Diane began crying.

"I repeated what Daniel told me. I never saw Claire having episodes."

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Diane, stop."

"No."

"You don't know what you're saying."

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

Claire closed her eyes.

It did not erase what her mother had done.

But it mattered.

Diane continued.

"Daniel said if Claire fought the divorce, everyone would lose the house. He said she was trying to destroy him."

Claire looked through the chute opening.

"Mom, call 911."

Daniel moved.

Diane stepped backward.

He reached for her phone.

Vanessa blocked him.

"Touch her and I scream loud enough for every neighbor to hear."

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

"You think you're helping?"

"Yes."

"You think Claire won't come after you next?"

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You lied to me for eight months."

"I loved you."

"You introduced me to your wife as a problem you had already removed."

"That's not fair."

Vanessa almost smiled.

"Fair?"

Upstairs, Sophie appeared at the top of the basement stairs.

Daniel saw her.

His expression shifted immediately.

Soft voice.

"Sophie, sweetheart, go upstairs."

The girl did not move.

Vanessa looked up.

"Call 911."

Daniel shouted.

"No."

Sophie ran.

Daniel started up the stairs.

Vanessa grabbed the back of his shirt.

He spun.

For one dangerous moment everyone froze.

Claire raised the phone.

"You're still recording."

Daniel looked at the lens.

His anger disappeared.

He released Vanessa.

Straightened his shirt.

Then smiled.

"Good."

The sudden calm frightened Claire.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"Record this. My wife is having a mental health crisis. She broke property, threatened my family, and accidentally climbed into a laundry chute."

Claire stared at him.

He was building a story in real time.

Vanessa said, "I watched you try to stop Sophie from calling emergency services."

Daniel shrugged.

"Because there's no emergency."

From inside the chute, Claire's injured shoulder gave a sudden spasm.

Her grip slipped.

She dropped several inches.

She screamed.

Vanessa ran toward the chute.

"Claire."

Daniel stepped forward.

Vanessa turned on him.

"If she falls, this recording becomes the least of your problems."

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

May you like

Daniel heard them.

His face finally lost all composure.
