Chapter 11 - The House of Lies

Claire did not return home.

Rachel took her in.

Rebecca Collins arrived the next morning with coffee, a yellow legal pad, and the kind of focused expression Claire desperately needed.

"You have enough evidence for an emergency protective order."

Claire nodded.

Rebecca continued.

"You also have grounds to freeze certain marital assets."

"What's left of them."

"We'll find out."

Claire looked toward Rachel's kitchen window.

"What happens to Daniel?"

"That's up to prosecutors."

"And Margaret?"

"Also prosecutors."

"My mother?"

Rebecca paused.

"That depends on what evidence shows about her participation."

Claire looked down.

"She turned on the washing machine."

"I know."

"She heard me calling her."

"I know."

Claire's voice cracked.

"She's my mother."

Rebecca did not offer an easy answer.

"I know."

That afternoon, Diane came to Rachel's apartment.

Claire almost refused to see her.

Then she changed her mind.

They sat across from each other in Rachel's living room.

Diane looked older than she had two days earlier.

"I'm sorry."

Claire said nothing.

Diane continued.

"I kept telling myself I was preventing something worse."

"What was worse than helping them hold me there?"

Diane cried.

"I thought Daniel was going to lose everything."

"He did."

"I thought you could start over."

Claire stared.

"With what? He emptied our savings."

"I didn't know that."

"You didn't ask."

Diane lowered her head.

Claire continued.

"You believed him when he said I was unstable."

"I was afraid."

"Of me?"

"No. Of everything falling apart."

Claire's voice became quiet.

"So you chose the person who looked calm."

Diane nodded.

Daniel had always looked calm.

That was his greatest weapon.

Diane reached into her purse.

"I brought something."

Claire tensed.

Her mother removed an envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

"What is it?"

"Daniel gave me papers to keep."

Claire did not touch it.

"What papers?"

"Copies of emails. Financial statements. He said if you searched the house, he needed backups somewhere."

Claire stared.

Diane swallowed.

"I read some last night."

Rebecca, seated quietly near the kitchen, leaned forward.

"What did you find?"

Diane looked at Claire.

"The money wasn't only lost in an investment."

Claire waited.

"Daniel borrowed from clients."

Claire frowned.

"What clients?"

"His consulting company."

Daniel managed commercial development accounts.

He had access to deposits.

Diane continued.

"He moved money through temporary accounts. He planned to replace it after the property loan."

Claire felt cold.

"How much?"

Diane whispered.

"Almost four hundred thousand dollars."

Rebecca immediately took the drive.

"Did you alter anything?"

"No."

"Copy anything?"

"No."

"Good."

Claire looked at her mother.

"Why did he trust you with this?"

Diane began crying again.

"Because I proved I would choose him over you."

The sentence landed harder than Claire expected.

Diane did not ask for forgiveness.

That helped.

She simply stood.

"I'm going to give a full statement."

Claire nodded.

Diane reached the door.

Then turned.

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

Claire looked at her.

"Good."

Diane flinched.

Claire continued.

"Because I can't do that right now."

Her mother nodded.

Then left.

Rebecca inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop.

The first folder contained banking records.

The second contained loan applications.

The third was labeled C.B.

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

Rebecca opened it.

Inside were draft psychiatric affidavits.

Statements written in advance.

Descriptions of behavior Claire had never exhibited.

Paranoia.

Aggression.

Financial obsession.

Delusional jealousy.

One statement was written for Diane to sign.

Another for Margaret.

Another for Daniel.

Claire read the final paragraph.

Claire Bennett has repeatedly threatened to fabricate allegations against family members if her demands are not met.

Rebecca closed the file.

"They were preparing to make your evidence look like a symptom."

Claire sat back.

Daniel had not merely expected Claire to fight.

He had planned for it.

Then Rebecca noticed the document metadata.

The drafts had been created four months earlier.

Four months.

Before Claire discovered Vanessa.

Before the savings disappeared.

May you like

Before any confrontation.

Daniel had been preparing Claire's destruction long before she knew she needed to defend herself.
