Chapter 7 - The Girl Who Was Not Supposed to Hear

Sophie Cole had spent most of her seven years being told not to interrupt adults.

Her mother had taught her manners.

Her aunt Vanessa had taught her curiosity.

Daniel Bennett taught her something else that afternoon.

Adults sometimes lied when they believed children were not listening.

Sophie had arrived at Margaret's house with a neighbor because Vanessa was delayed at a bridal appointment.

She had been told Daniel was divorced.

She had been told his former wife lived in another state.

She had been told Margaret might soon become part of their family.

Then Sophie heard a woman screaming from inside the wall.

She told Margaret.

Margaret said the old pipes made strange sounds.

Sophie knew pipes did not say Mom.

She went downstairs while everyone was arguing in the kitchen.

Near the foyer she saw a phone beneath Daniel's coat.

The lock screen showed Claire Bennett.

Sophie remembered the name.

She had heard Vanessa say it once.

Daniel's difficult ex-wife.

The woman who supposedly moved away.

Sophie picked up the phone.

It was not dead.

It had been switched off.

She turned it on.

No passcode appeared because Claire had disabled automatic locking earlier that morning while copying documents.

Then Sophie heard Claire again.

Help me.

The girl followed the sound to the upstairs chute access.

She opened it.

Claire's face was below.

Terrified.

Sophie did the only thing she could think of.

She pressed record.

Then lowered the phone.

After Claire took it, Sophie ran upstairs to Vanessa's future bedroom.

She found the tablet Vanessa sometimes let her use.

The device was connected to the house Wi-Fi.

Sophie called Vanessa.

Her aunt answered immediately.

"Hey, bug."

Sophie whispered.

"There's a lady in the wall."

Vanessa laughed at first.

"What?"

"A lady is stuck in the laundry thing."

Vanessa became silent.

"What lady?"

"I think Daniel's wife."

Vanessa did not answer.

Sophie continued.

"Grandma Margaret won't let her out."

"Sophie, where is Daniel?"

"Downstairs."

"Do not go near him."

Sophie swallowed.

"Okay."

"I'm coming."

Vanessa ended the call.

Sophie hid in the upstairs bathroom.

Below her, the washing machines roared.

Inside the chute, Claire kept recording.

Margaret's voice eventually rose enough to cut through the vibration.

"Sign the damn papers and we'll let you out."

Claire aimed the phone through the bottom opening.

"Go to hell. I'm not signing shit."

The recording captured everything.

Diane pacing.

Margaret threatening.

Daniel coming downstairs every few minutes to check whether Claire had changed her mind.

Then Daniel said something that Claire would later replay more than any other line.

"We only need her signature long enough to close the transfer."

Margaret answered.

"And after?"

"I file the petition."

"What petition?"

"The emergency mental health petition. Then anything she says becomes part of the instability record."

Claire stopped breathing.

That was the plan.

Not merely stealing property.

Discrediting her afterward.

Diane whispered.

"You said she wouldn't be committed."

Daniel sounded irritated.

"Nobody said committed."

"You said observation."

"Exactly."

"For how long?"

"Long enough."

Claire recorded every word.

Her hands shook so badly the image blurred.

Then footsteps sounded overhead.

A door opened.

Vanessa's voice floated through the house.

"Daniel?"

Margaret looked up sharply.

Diane whispered.

"She's early."

Daniel swore.

May you like

Claire tightened her grip on the phone.

For the first time since falling into the chute, she smiled.
